A Word From the Rabbi

The preparations are well underway for our Annual Dinner celebrating the sixteenth anniversary of Chabad of Port Washington. At this time I appeal to you, my dear congregants, supporters, school parents and friends, for your help:

The annual dinner is the single most important fundraiser of the year. The success of the dinner is imperative to ensure that we are able to meet our financial responsibilities in terms of our considerable annual operational budget. Thank G‑d, our Chabad has been growing by leaps and bounds in every area, be it shul, dayschool, Hebrew school, camp, teen club etc. All of these wonderful projects are expensive. Each year our projects expand, and so does our budget. We need your help!

Visit our website www.chabadpw.org/dinner: You can now do everything online from placing ads, reserving seats, choosing the text for your ads, etc. Payments can also be made online in a secure manner.

Please consider making a generous donation to the dinner and journal effort. Please open your heart and try to stretch yourself a little bit to help make this a successful event. Journal ads range from $180 to $25,000; give what you can give. Purchase a few tickets and attend the dinner personally. Please do your share which will add up cumulatively to the success we need and are hoping for. Help us to continue bringing the warm, welcoming message of “Judaism with a Smile” to your family and to the community.

For the bold and brave ones out there: How about garnering up the courage to approach your friends to purchase a pair of dinner tickets? Perhaps you can approach some of your regular vendors to support us with a journal ad, large or small; your gardner, pediatrician, dentist, stock broker, contractor, drycleaner, furrier, electrician, plumber, hairdresser, personal trainer, limo driver, others etc. Please call Maria at my office or email her [email protected] and she will send you some ad blanks to give to your vendors. You'd be surprised how they might respond. Often they are more than happy to donate something to your charity to show their gratitude to you for your patronage. You're helping them feel good, and you're helping Chabad pay some bills. It's a win-win!

Thank you all! Shabbat Shalom!

Rabbi Shalom M. Paltiel

P.S. Chabad Shul members, show your support of our beloved Zelik Sander, our L'Chayim award recipient. R' Zelik is there for us every day, opening the shul, volunteering his time, and lifting our spirits with his bright smile and warm, friendly demeanor.

Shavuot
Shavuot is the culmination of the counting of the 49 days of the Omer. It marks the giving of the Torah on Mt. Sinai. The Ten Commandments are read in synagogues on Shavuot just as they were in the desert on Mt. Sinai over 3,300 years ago.

Daily Thought
Two Paths

The Baal Shem Tov taught there are two paths:

G‑dliness is everything.

Everything is G‑dliness.

Where the two paths converge, there is G‑d Himself.

From the wisdom of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Schneerson; words and condensation by Tzvi Freeman. To order Tzvi's book, "Bringing Heaven Down to Earth, click here.

The Parshah In a Nutshell
Parshat Naso

Completing the head-count of the Children of Israel taken in the Sinai Desert, a total of 8,580 Levite men between the ages of 30 and 50 are counted in a tally of those who will be doing the actual work of transporting the Tabernacle.

G‑d communicates to Moses the law of the "Sotah", the wayward wife suspected of unfaithfulness to her husband. Also given is the law of the Nazir who forswears wine, lets his or her hair grow long, and is forbidden to become contaminated through contact with a dead body. Aaron and his descendents the Kohanim are instructed on how to bless the people of Israel.

The leaders of the twelve tribes of Israel each bring their offerings for the inauguration of the altar. Although their gifts are identical, each is brought on a different day and is individually described by the Torah.
