A Word From the Rabbi

Mazel tov to all of us at Chabad of Port Washington on the first graduating class at our elementary school, Chabad Academy of Science & the Humanities' Max & Ruth Schwartz Elementary. This is clearly a milestone event! At this time I would like to congratulate the graduates and their families, and offer a few appropriate thank yous:

Thank you to Rabbi Glogauer and the dedicated team of professionals and administrators, for a job well done.

Thank you to Henry Schwartz for being the catalyst behind the establishment of the elementary school, back in 1998.

Thank you Dr. Martin Brownstein, the pioneer who first established the Florence Brownstein Preschool back in 1991, on which was later built the elementary.

Thank you Jonathan Iseson for dedicating our new building in 2000 so that the school and Chabad could have a permanent home.

Thank you Bert Brodsky, Adam Katz and Frank Arnold, the 3-way partnership which built Phase II to allow for the necessary expansion of the school.

Thank you to our family of financial backers who make it possible for us to offer an amazing educational program for affordable tuition so that no child misses out on this opportunity.

Most importantly, thank you Hashem, Al-Mighty G‑d, for blessing our work with success. We pray for continued blessings for the future so that we can have a positive effect on the lives of many hundreds of young people by giving them a well-rounded Jewish education along with an excellent education in general studies.

Mazel Tov! Shabbat Shalom!

The Tzaddik
A fundamental principle of the Jewish faith is that there are no "intermediaries" between G‑d and His world; our relationship with Him is not facilitated by any third party. So what is the role of a rabbi, a rebbe—indeed, a Moses—in Judaism?

What Lies Inside

Within each thing we behold, the moshiach dwells, like the embryo waiting to break out of its egg. In the rhythm of a dandelion shivering in the breeze, in the eyes of the children we raise, in the goals we make in life, in the machines we use and the art we create, in the air we breathe and the blood rushing through our veins.

When the world was made, the sages say, the moshiach was the wind hovering over all that would be.

Today, those who know to listen can hear his voice beckoning, "Do no let go of me after all these ages! For the fruit of your labor and the labor of your holy mothers and fathers is about to ripen."

The listening alone is enough to crack the shell of the egg.

The Parshah In a Nutshell
Parshat Chukat

Moses is taught the laws of the Red Heifer, whose ashes purify a person who has been contaminated by contact with a dead body.

After 40 years of journeying through the desert, the people of Israel arrive in the wilderness of Zin. Miriam dies and the people thirst for water. G‑d tells Moses to speak to a rock and command it to give water. Moses gets angry at the rebellious Israelites and strikes the stone. Water issues forth, but Moses is told by G‑d that neither he nor Aaron will enter the Promised Land.

Aaron dies at Har Hahar and is succeeded in the High Priesthood by his son Elazar. Venomous snakes attack the Israelite camp after yet another eruption of discontent in which the people "speak against G‑d and Moses"; G‑d tells Moses to place a brass serpent upon a high pole, and all who will gaze heavenward will be healed. The people sing a song in honor of the miraculous well that provided the water in the desert.

Moses leads the people in battles against the Emorite kings Sichon and Og (who seek to prevent Israel's passage through their territory) and conquers their lands, which lie east of the Jordan.
