A Word From the Rabbi

Wow! What a great evening we had last night at the Sixteenth Anniversary Dinner! More than 400 people came together and celebrated with us. We saluted our esteemed honorees and dinner chair, and all participants thoroughly enjoyed the amazing singing sensation Benny Friedman. The video presentations were moving and inspiring. We all took pride in OUR Chabad!

To all of you – those who came last night and those who couldn’t make it... those who support us financially and those who volunteer their valuable time to help... those who attend shul and school here and those who come to Chabad to learn and to celebrate... or to play mahjong or basketball or just to have a bagel... Thank you all for being a part of our Chabad!

Shabbat Shalom!
Rabbi Shalom M. Paltiel

P.S. By popular request we are posting the honorees' speeches here - see the right panel of this email. We've gotten so many positive comments and feedback from the dinner. Feel free to watch the videos we showed at the dinner and post your comments to the event and the dinner on the diner blog.

Teen Club Cooks in Claire's Kitchen for the 60 residents of the Ronald McDonald House

This past Sunday the CTC got together in full force for one of the greatest community service events of the year: cooking a full dinner for 60! Residents of the Long Island Ronald McDonald House. The menu consisted of pasta with meat sauce, a beautiful green salad, and garlic bread. The kitchen was hot, there was tons of food flying everywhere and the CTC’ers worked very hard to feed the needy right here in our own backyard. Great job CTC!

Daily Quote
Reflect upon three things and you will not come to the hands of transgression. Know from where you came, where you are going, and before whom you are destined to give a judgement and accounting. From where you came — from a putrid drop; where you are going — to a place of dust, maggots and worms; and before whom you are destined to give a judgement and accounting — before the supreme king of kings, the Holy One, blessed be He.

Daily Thought
The Creator of Logic

G‑d can do anything. He could even, as the Talmud puts it, "fit an elephant through the eye of a needle."

So, how would He do it? Would He make the elephant smaller? Or would He expand the eye of the needle?

Neither. The elephant would remain big, the eye of the needle small. And He would fit the elephant through the eye of the needle.

Illogical? True. But logic is just another of His creations. He who created logic is permitted to disregard it.

The Parshah In a Nutshell
Parshat Shlach

Moses sends twelve spies to the Land of Canaan. Forty days later they return, carrying a huge cluster of grapes, a pomegranate and a fig, to report on a lush and bountiful land. But ten of the spies warn that the inhabitants of the land are giants and warriors "more powerful than we"; only Caleb and Joshua insist that the land can be conquered, as G‑d has commanded.

The people weep that they'd rather return to Egypt. G‑d decrees that Israel's entry into the Land shall be delayed forty years, during which time that entire generation will die out in the desert. A group of remorseful Jews storm the mountain on the border of Land and are routed by the Amalekites and Canaanites.

The laws of the menachot (meal, wine and oil offerings) are given, as well as the mitzvah to consecrate a portion of the dough (challah) to G‑d when making bread. A man violates the Shabbat by gathering sticks and is put to death. G‑d instructs to place fringes (tzitzit) on the four corners of our garments so that we should remember to fulfill the mitzvot (Divine commandments).
