A Word From the Rabbi

Last week, history was made in the Port Washington Jewish community: For the first time ever, a parade took place in Port that celebrated a Jewish holiday and Jewish life in general. The students and parents of our Hebrew School, along with friends and other community members, came out to be a part of history! The Nassau County Police led the parade of children and adults, who marched along Shore Road and Manorhaven Blvd., proudly displaying signs with themes of Torah, mitzvahs and acts of kindness. The children chanted and sang. Festive Jewish music played. Many motorists joined the joyous chorus with their horns sounding their approval (or otherwise). It was a Kiddush Hashem, a proud display of Jewish pride and solidarity, which this wonderful country affords us.

Kudos to RabbiWeinberg for organizing the entire event from beginning to end, including the festive BBQ in Manorhaven Park that followed. Special Guest to the BBQ was Port Washington School District Superintendent Dr. Geoffrey Gordon. No, he didn’t come as “Scholar in Residence”. Dr. Gordon came because his son is enrolled in the Chabad Hebrew School, the absolute best, most comprehensive, most educationally sound and most fun Hebrew School experience available anywhere in town. Best wishes for a Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Shalom M. Paltiel

NEWS

Daily Mincha service now available in Port:
Our Middle school - Chabad Academy of Science & the Humanities (C.A.S.H.) – began a daily Mincha (afternoon) prayer service this week. The school's principal, Rabbi Noteh Glogauer, decided to establish the Mincha minyan now that the school had a minyan of its own (the requisite quorum of 10 men over Bar Mitzvah age). Our 8th grade class now has 10 Bar Mitzvah boys which makes the minyan possible. The Mincha minyan begins each weekday (school day) at 1:50 PM sharp and lasts about 15 minutes. The community is invited to join the minyan. If you know anyone in town who is saying kaddish and would like a minyan for mincha please pass this information along to them.

The Parshah In a Nutshell
Parshat Behar-Bechukotai

On the mountain of Sinai, G‑d communicates to Moses the laws of the sabbatical year: every seventh year, all work on the land should cease, and its produce becomes free for the taking for all, man and beast.

Seven sabbatical cycles are followed by a fiftieth year — the jubilee year, on which work on the land ceases, all indentured servants are set free, and all ancestral estates in the Holy Land that have been sold revert to their original owners. Additional laws governing the sale of lands and the prohibitions against fraud and usury are also given.

G‑d promises that if the people of Israel will keep His commandments, they will enjoy material prosperity and dwell secure in their homeland. But He also delivers a harsh "rebuke" warning of the exile, persecution and other evils that will befall them if they abandon their covenant with Him. Nevertheless, "Even when they are in the land of their enemies, I will not cast them away; nor will I ever abhor them, to destroy them and to break My covenant with them; for I am the L-rd their G‑d."

The Parshah concludes with the rules on how to calculate the value of different types of pledges made to G‑d.

Daily Thought
More Light

Fighting evil is a very noble activity when it must be done. But it is not our mission in life.

Our job is to bring in more light.
