A Word From the Rabbi

This coming Sunday we celebrate Lag B'Omer, the 33rd day of the Omer count, which corresponds to the 18th day of Iyar. On this day we observe the passing of the great sage and mystic, Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai also known as “Rashbi”.

Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai is known as the author of the Zohar – the source of Jewish Mysticism which sheds light onto all of Torah's teachings, revealing the esoteric soul of Torah. Therefore, in addition to celebrating Lag B'Omer in a joyous way as requested by the Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai prior to his passing, it is also an opportune time to increase or enhance your Torah Studies especially in areas of mystical and Kabbalistic teachings.

We have the perfect class which will enable you do so and I personally invite you to join our new Tanya class. The Tanya is the basic book of Chabad philosophy and a classic in terms of applied “intellectual Kabalah”. Encounter a spiritual dimension of Judaism with the study of the Tanya every Shabbat morning 8:45 am to 9:30 am. There's no better time than now to take advantage of this incredible class, free of charge – click here to sign up online – I look forward to having you join me for this weekly class.

I also take this opprotunity to remind you about our new biblical series on the book of Numbers entitled "Journeys" beginning on Sunday May 20 - click here to sign up for this fantastic 8-week course.

Best wishes for a Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Shalom M. Paltiel

Upcoming Events

Lag B'omer
Please make note: This year we will not be holding our annual Lag B’Omer BBQ in light of the fact that two large parades will be taking place on the same day; the Israel Day Parade in Manhattan and the Grand Lag B’Omer Parade in Brooklyn. We encourage people to attend these parades with their families to show support and solidarity.

When Lag B'omer falls on a Sunday - only once in 4 years - the Brooklyn Lag B'Omer Parade arranged by Tzivos Hashem, can be done on a much grander scale - certainly an event not to miss! The kids will enjoy a show featuring world famous Ives Brothers Thrill Riders, a fabulous fair, petting zoo, marching bands, floats, renowned children's singer Chaim Fogelman, rides and a whole lot more! Bring the children for a day they will not forget! This event takes place outside 770 Eastern Parkway, Brooklyn NY 11213 - click here for more information.

Lag BaOmer
Bow and Arrow
On the whole, this is how we conduct our lives: when something faces us, we grab hold of something else — a telephone, a wallet, a gun — with which to deal with the situation. But there comes a point at which the external resources on which we've come to rely are suddenly ineffectual, and the only place to turn is inward, to ourselves

Daily Thought
The Mandate

The mandate of the whole of Creation is stated almost immediately. They translate it as "Let there be light". Instead, read, "It should become Light".

Meaning that all the world —even the darkness— should become a source of light and wisdom.

The Parshah In a Nutshell
Parshat Emor

The Torah section of Emor ("Speak") begins with the special laws pertaining to the Kohanim ("priests"), the Kohen Gadol ("High Priest"), and the Temple service: A Kohen may not become ritually impure through contact with a dead body, save on the occasion of the death of a close relative. A Kohen may not marry a divorcee or a woman with a promiscuous past; a Kohen Gadol can marry only a virgin. A Kohen with a physical deformity cannot serve in the Holy Temple, nor can a deformed animal be brought as an offering.

A newborn calf, lamb, or kid must be left with its mother for seven days; one may not slaughter an animal and its offspring on the same day.

The second part of Emor lists the annual Callings of Holiness — the festivals of the Jewish calendar: the weekly Shabbat; the bringing of the Passover offering on 14 Nissan; the seven-day Passover festival beginning on 15 Nissan; the bringing of the Omer offering from the first barley harvest on the 2nd day of Passover, and the commencement, on that day, of the 49-day Counting of the Omer, culminating in the festival of Shavuot on the 50th day; a "remembrance of shofar blowing" on 1 Tishrei; a solemn fast day on 10 Tishrei; the Sukkot festival — during which we are to dwell in huts for seven days and take the "Four Kinds" — beginning on 15 Tishrei; and the immediately following holiday of the "8th day" of Sukkot (Shemini Atzeret.

Next the Torah discusses the lighting of the Menorah in the Temple, and the showbread (Lechem Hapanim) placed weekly on the table there.

Emor concludes with the incident of a man executed for blasphemy, and the penalties for murder (death) and for injuring one's fellow or destroying his property (monetary compensation).
