Chabad of Port Washington

A Word From the Rabbi

While the tragedy at the Virginia Tech University shocked us, as human beings , the world over, we as a Jewish community in particular mourn the loss of one of our own, Professor Libeu Libresco, a Romanian Holocaust survivor who was murdered while courageously saving his students from certain death.

60 years after being liberated from Bergen Belsen, he chose to give up his life so that others could continue to enjoy theirs. His Kiddush Hashem, sanctification of G‑d's name was noticed by people the world over and even U.S. President George W. Bush.

May his family find solace and comfort in the knowledge that their father's moment of death was the ultimate expression of life.

A Chabad Center dedicated to his memory will be established at Virginia Tech and will perpetuate his legacy of sacrificing one's life for the sake of another. If you would like to join the global campaign of Mitzvot in his memory your Mitzva will be presented to the Students at the University.

Every week Professor Libresco would remind his wife of the appropriate time to light the Shabbat candles. This week, as she lights them alone, let us light those beautiful candles in his memory together with her. Candle lighting time tonight is at 7:21 pm.

The Lubavitcher Rebbe of righteous memory would always teach us to transform darkness to light, pain into action. This week is an especially opportune time to increase in acts of goodness and kindness. Let us light and encourage others to light those beautiful Shabbat candles, thus dispelling a little bit of the darkness in our world.

Best wishes for a Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Shalom M. Paltiel

NEW! Tanya Class—beginning April 28 - click to sign up!
The Tanya is the basic book of Chabad philosophy and a classic in terms of applied “intellectual Kabalah”. Its stated aim is to show a path to realizing one's purpose and developing a deeper relationship with G‑d. Encounter a spiritual dimension of Judaism with the study of the Tanya, presented in a most fascinating fashion by Rabbi Paltiel. Attain insights into yourself and the world around you with these fundamental teachings of Kabbalah, exploring and solving the dilemmas of the human soul.

This weekly class will meet every Saturday beginning April 28th from 8:45 am to 9:30 am. We hope to eventually complete the entire 52 chapters of this classic, well renowned Chassidic work. Daily Quote

I learned the meaning of love from a drunk. I once passed two drunks drinking in a gutter and overheard the following conversation between them:
Drunk #1: "I love you!"
Drunk #2: "No you don't."
Drunk #1: "Yes, yes, I do. I love you with all my heart."
Drunk #2: "No you don't. If you love me, why don't you know what hurts me?"

Our first reaction is tragedy is denial. We are not vulnerable. We could have prevented this tragedy. We grasp at the flimsiest of straws to prove to ourselves that we are in complete control over our destiny...

The Parshah In a Nutshell
Parshat Acharei-Kedoshim

Following the deaths of Nadav and Avihu, G‑d warns against unauthorized entry "into the holy." Only one person, the Kohen Gadol ("high priest"), may, but once a year, on Yom Kippur, enter the innermost chamber in the Sanctuary to offer the sacred ketoret to G‑d.

Another feature of the Day of Atonement service is the casting of lots over two goats to determine which should be offered to G‑d and which should be dispatched to carry off the sins of Israel to the wilderness.

The Parshah of Acharei also warns against bringing korbanot (animal or meal offerings) anywhere but in the Holy Temple, forbids the consumption of blood, and details the laws prohibiting incest and other deviant sexual relations.

The Parshah of Kedoshim begins with the statement: "You shall be holy, for I, the L-rd your G‑d, am holy" followed by dozens of mitzvot (Divine commandments) through which the Jew sanctifies him or herself and relates to the holiness of G‑d. These include: the prohibition against idolatry, the mitzvah of charity, the principle of equality before the law, Shabbat, sexual morality, honesty in business, honor and awe of one's parents, the sacredness of life.

Also in Kedoshim is the dictum which the great sage Rabbi Akiva called a cardinal principle of Torah and of which Hillel said, "This is the entire Torah, the rest is commentary" — Love your fellow as yourself.

Daily Thought
Infinity

G‑d is not just big — He is infinite. If He were only "big", then those things that are small would be further from Him and those things that are big would be closer. But to the Infinite, big and small are irrelevant terms. He is everywhere and He is found wherever He wishes to be found.
