A word from the Rabbi

July 1st marked the 2nd anniversary since Rabbi Ilan and Devorah Weinberg moved our beautiful community to serve as Rabbi and Rebbitzin. During these two years they have touched the lives of so many individuals and families and have made a very real impact in the Chabad House.

Rabbi Weinberg has taken the Hebrew School and camp to new levels of professionalism and educational excellence. He also established the Bar/Bat Mitzvah clubs which have become hugely popular. Countless people consult with him on personal matters and see in him a wise, trusted friend and rabbi. Personally, he has become a good friend whom I can count on and discuss matters with. I also feel much less guilty leaving for a Shabbat now and than, as I know I can count on him to deliver an inspiring, meaningful sermon.

Rebbitzin Devorah Weinberg has been busy raising her growing family, while at the same time hosting people for Shabbos and holiday dinners. Her home is open with a true spirit of hospitality, including allowing people to stay over for Shabbat in Port Washington. She also hosts our Chabad Teen Club Shabbat dinners at her home. In the midst of this all, she is continuing to develop her career in art as well as continuing her education towards a Masters degree in art. In spite of all of that, Devorah makes it her business to be at Chabad whenever possible at Shabbat dinners and at shul, reaching out to the community with warmth and yiddishkeit.

Congratulations Weinberg family! We look forward to spending many more years together fulfilling the Rebbe’s dreams for our community!

Shabbat Shalom,

Rabbi Shalom M. Paltiel

Camp News

From the Desk of our Head Counselor, Etti

Hey Everyone,

I would like to personally welcome camper and staff to B.G.I. camp of 2008. Each week this summer there will be an overall theme. Each day will be focused on another part of the theme for that week. This week’s theme was Jewish Identity.” So each day we learned a little bit more about it. Monday was our Jewish name. Tuesday we learned about our Jewish birthday. Wednesday we focused on our Jewish clothing, and Thursday was an awesome trip day!!!

This first week at Berkowitz Gan Israel turned out to be a great success with all the enthusiasm and great spirit from everyone. We had a lot of fun and amazing activities throughout each day. Some bunks made; puzzles with their bunk name, sticky icky GAK, Limbo, Click here to view more photosTug of war, and musical chairs. These are just a few activities that we had participated in and there are so many more. On Monday and Wednesday we had a very exciting time in the pool. We had some time to go cool off from all the running and excitement in camp. We also had a great time flying around the gym with our new sports trainer, Brian. We had a great time and ran out of all our energy learning lots of cool new games.

On Tuesday we had a very special visitor from Chai Lifeline. They introduced the wonderful Swim-a-thon that each camper can participate and receive really cool prizes in the end. We want to encourage all the campers to do their best to get sponsors for all their laps they will do. (Note: Those who can not swim can walk across the pool and it will count as a lap.) I can’t wait to see all the campers coming to me with their ideas of how many laps they think they will do!!! On Wednesday we had a very cool activity of Yoga. It was so nice to have some time to breathe and stretch our bodies from such a long, tiring, and exciting day!! We also made learned about boys wearing Kipa’s and girls lighting candles. So each boy had the chance to create and decorate his own Kip; while the girls had a chance to make their very own beautiful candle stick. Thursday we went to BOOMERS!! There we had fun running around on the slides, go karts, bumper cars and loads more. We really did have a splendid week.

Click here to view more photosThis week we started a great program of Bunk Competition. We have a bulletin board with each of the bunks names and the bunk first in line, loudest cheering, (I would like to give lots of credit to all the bunks for their cheering; especially the Mitzvah Mountains really help a lot. You guys are awesome) helping others, bentching nicely are all ways each bunk to receive points. At the end of next week the bunk with most points will receive a prize!! Good Luck to all!

Daily Quote
The life of a tzaddik is not a physical life, but a life consisting wholly of faith, awe, and love of G‑d... While the tzaddik was alive on earth, his disciples received but a reflection of these attributes, a ray radiating beyond this vessel by means of his holy utterances and thoughts... But after his passing... whoever is close to him can receive a [far loftier dimension] of these three attributes, since they are no longer confined within a [material] vessel, nor bounded by physical space...

the parshah in a nutshell
ParshatBalak

Balak, the King of Moab, summons the prophet Balaam to curse the people of Israel. On the way, Balaam is berated by his ass, who sees the angel that G‑d sends to block their way before Balaam does. Three times, from three different vantage points, Balaam attempts to pronounce his curses; each time, blessings issue instead. Balaam also prophecies on the end of the days and the coming of Moshiach.

The people fall prey to the charms of the daughters of Moab and are enticed to worship the idol Peor. When a high-ranking Israelite official publicly takes a Midianite princess into a tent, Pinchas kills them both, stopping the plague raging among the people.

Daily Thought
Youthful Wisdom

Wisdom lives in the future, and from there it speaks to us. There is no such thing as wisdom of the past.

Wisdom preceded the world and wisdom is its destiny. With each passing moment, wisdom becomes younger as we come closer to the time when it is born and breathes the air of day.

Our ancient mothers and fathers, the sages, all those from whom we learn wisdom—they are not guardians of the past. They are messengers of the future.

The truth can never be old-fashioned. It was never in fashion to begin with.
