A Word From the Rabbi

The Jewish community the world over will be observing Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day, this coming Sunday. Remembering this most tragic of events in our people’s history is critical to the future of our people. We honor the memory of six million (plus) of our brothers and sisters who were brutally murdered just for being Jewish, and we vow to do whatever we can to keep their memories alive through continuing Jewish life and Jewish observance into the future.

Some years back the UJA Federation came out with a campaign that every Seder table keep one empty seat to honor one of the 6 million who perished. When they approached the Lubavitcher Rebbe asking for his support of the campaign the Rebbe refused. Rather than an empty seat, the Rebbe suggested that we fill that we fill that seat with a fellow Jew who would otherwise not have celebrated the Seder. The Rebbe’s message: The best way to guarantee the perpetuation of the legacy of the 6 million is by actively spreading living Judaism to those around us, who will carry Judaism into the future.

In this spirit, I invite you to join me at shul this Shabbat for a special service in honor of Yom HaShoah. Services begin 9:30am. Torah reading and Yom HaShoah service at 11:00am. Kiddush luncheon at noon, sponsored by the Salzbank family.

Shabbat Shalom!

Rabbi Shalom M. Paltiel

The Parshah In a Nutshell
Parshat Shemini

On the eighth day following "seven days of inauguration," Aaron and his sons begin to officiate as Kohanim (priests); a fire issues forth from G‑d to consume the offerings on the Altar and the Divine Presence comes to dwell in the Sanctuary.

Aaron's two elder sons, Nadav and Avihu, offer a "strange fire before G‑d, which He commanded them not" and die before G‑d. Aaron is silent in face of his tragedy. Moses and Aaron subsequently disagree as to a point of law regarding the offerings, but Moses concedes to Aaron that Aaron is in the right.

G‑d commands the kosher laws, identifying the animal species permissible and forbidden for consumption. Land animals may be eaten only if they have split hooves and also chew their cud; fish must have fins and scales; a list of non-kosher birds is given, and a list of kosher insects (four types of locusts).

Also in Shemini are some of the laws of ritual purity, including the purifying power of the mikvah (a pool of water meeting specified qualifications) and the wellspring. Thus the people of Israel are enjoined to "differentiate between the impure and the pure."

Daily Thought
Crossroads

There are crossroads where you choose not only your future, but your past as well.

Take one path, your past becomes but a silly, useless dream that might as well never have happened.

Take another path and all your past becomes a magnificent frame for a glorious moment of life. For it is that moment for which your soul was formed.
