A Word From the Rabbi

Last Shabbat was truly amazing. As you know, we had a fantastic Shabbaton planned with Dr. Susskind on marriage and relationships. The weather began getting progressively worse on Friday as the day wore on and it soon became obvious that Dr. Susskind was not going to make it here on time from Monsey. In general Chabad never likes to cancel a program because you never know who might be affected or moved by which program, so why not just leave it in the hands of Hashem. So we decided the Shabaton would go on as planned, only without the speaker!

We expected maybe 10 people to brave the weather and show up. Lo and behold almost every one of our 60 expected guests came. The atmosphere was magical, almost romantic, with the snow, ice and wind outside, and all of us inside celebrating Shabbat. Shabbat morning a similar thing happened. A Kiddush was planned by Toby O’Conner in honor of Rachel’s birthday, but we feared no one would show up. The crowd was in fact noticeably smaller than usual, but people did come. We had a beautiful Kiddush and farbrengen (informal gathering) where many people gave over words of inspiration and Torah and we sang meaningful songs for Shabbat. Goes to show, a little warmth goes a long way on a cold day! Or like I always like to say: Why is a Jew like a bottle of vodka? Because even if you freeze him – he remains warm on the inside!

Shabbat Shalom!
Rabbi Shalom M Paltiel

P.S. Don’t miss the shabbaton with Dr. Susskind which has been rescheduled for April 20/21. Mark your calendar. You can already RSVP on the website by clicking here.

Torah Studies Course Description: The Soul of Sacrifice
Animal sacrifice occupies a central place in the Torah, yet its origins and purpose are greatly misunderstood. Although Jewish liturgy is re replete with expressions of longing for the reinstitution of the avodah (sacrificial services) in the Temple, it seems puzzling that HaShem (G‑d), infinite and eternal, should demand the sacrifice of animals as a fundamental part of worship. In unlocking the secrets of this mystery, we will examine the intrinsic value of the animal offering, the transformation it effects upon its owner and how the concept of the avodah likewise occupies an essential role within each individual, specifically in prayer.

Daily Thought
Engaged

The challenge is to keep the Cosmic Mind engaged. He needs to see things that interest Him happening down here. Just an everyday world going about its everyday stuff gets dull after a while. On the other hand, angels singing His praises all day can also get rather tedious.

But an earthly being doing a G‑dly act — now that's something to wake up about.

The Parshah In a Nutshell
Parshat Vayikra

G‑d calls to Moses from the Tent of Meeting, and communicates to him the laws of the korbanot, the animal and meal offerings brought in the Sanctuary. These include:

The "ascending offering" (olah) that is wholly raised to G‑d by the fire atop the Altar;

Five varieties of "meal offering" (minchah) prepared with fine flour, olive oil and frankincense;

The "peace offering" (shelamim), whose meat was eaten by the one bringing the offering, after parts are burned on the Altar and parts are given to the Kohanim (priests);

The different types of "sin offering" (chatat) brought to atone for transgressions committed erroneously by the High Priest, the entire community, the king, or the ordinary Jew;

The "guilt offering" (asham) brought by one who has appropriated property of the Sanctuary, who is in doubt as to whether he transgressed a divine prohibition, or who has committed a "betrayal against G‑d" by swearing falsely to defraud a fellow man.
