A Word From the Rabbi

The famous bumper sticker reads: Think Globally – Act Locally! We are all concerned about what is going on in Israel . It is important that we know that our “little” mitzvahs really help. Please visit our website and choose a mitzvah you will do for Israel: click here.

If you can join us in Shul this Shabbat, please do so. We will once again be saying special prayers for Israel in light of the situation. (Services begin 9:30am; prayer for Israel at 10:45am; lunch – including Lenny Lebovitch's legendary cholent at Noon followed by a farbrengen in honor of the new month.)

As you know, we have re-designed our website, http://www.chabadpw.org/. Last Friday, our site had a record number of visitors since it was first established. In addition, many of you emailed me telling me how nice it is and user friendly, etc. Thank you for the feedback.

Looking forward to hearing from you online, and seeing you at shul!

Shabbat Shalom!

Rabbi Shalom M. Paltiel

BERKOWITZ GAN ISRAEL DAY CAMP NEWS

Could you imagine spending a whole week celebrating all the Jewish holidays? Well, here at Berkowitz Gan Israel Day Camp we have done just that. On Monday the camp got right into the spirit of the week’s theme of ‘Jewish Holidays’ with holiday relay races! There was a race to dip an apple into honey, spin like a dancing draidle, and much more! The campers really had a terrific time celebrating Chanukah on Tuesday! The bunks enjoyed draidle playing and a fun menorah hunt.

On Wednesday the camp relived the story of leaving Egypt in their bunk study sessions, talked about the Passover seder, and even sang the four questions and Dayenu. On Thursday, Sukkos Day, the campers were traveling just as the Jews were in the desert, just instead of heading to Israel, they went to Cradle of Aviation and Wood Kingdom! All the campers had a blast! Friday was Purim Masquerade Day! The campers walked in to camp wearing costumes of all kinds. In the spirit of the day, the campers had an exciting Holiday Carnival and enjoyed tasty hamentachen which they had baked at camp!

The fun we had this Jewish Holiday Week at Berkowitz Gan Israel has definitely topped off all other weeks of the entire year!

The Holy Land

Fearing Our Own Strength
By Yosef Y. Jacobson

Israel is, thank G‑d, a strong country, with an exceptional military that combines courage, skills and profound morality. Israel will fight back until Hamas and Hezbollah accept a cease fire, at least for the time being.

Yet that is exactly what we must fear.

Israel has begun the "surgery" to cleanse its environment of the noxious diseases of terror and lust for Jewish deaths. But . . . CONTINUE

STORY: The Shabbos Goy

By Zev Roth
Submitted by:Sylvia Stern a.k.a. Bobbie (Rabbi Paltiel's Grandmother!)

In a small midwest town in the mid-1880s, Jacob Viner and his wife attempted to bring up their children in accordance with Jewish tradition. Shabbos was observed as best as they could in their Missouri village, located just outside Kansas City. One of the few advantages of living in such a setting was the presence of a large stock of people who could be used as a "Shabbos goy."

When it was required, it was the Viners' young neighbor Harry who was usually called upon. Harry frequently visited the Viner family to help light a fire to warm the house in the frigid midwest winter, or to perform various other Shabbos chores. He was well liked, respected, and always around when you needed him. He eventually came on a regular basis to the Viner family, as his sister Mary Jane had become best friends with her classmate Sarah Viner. Whenever he came, the Viners made sure to reimburse Harry with a small token of their appreciation - a piece of kugel or gefilte fish was always offered. Harry was particularly fond of matzah. Jewish Humor

submitted by: Joseph Esrail

A US Navy cruiser anchored in Mississippi for a week's shore leave. The first evening, the ship's Captain received the following note from the
wife of a wealthy plantation owner:

"Dear Captain, Thursday will be my daughter Melinda's Debutante Ball. I would like you to send four well mannered, handsome, unmarried officers in their formal dress uniforms to attend the dance. They should arrive promptly at 8:00 PM prepared for an evening of polite Southern conversation. They should be excellent dancers, as they will be the escorts of lovely refined young
ladies. One last point: No Jews Please."

At precisely 8:00 PM on Thursday, Melinda's mother heard a polite rap at the door which she opened to find, in full dress uniform, four
handsome, smiling black officers. Her mouth fell open, but pulling herself together, she stammered,"There must be some mistake."

"No, Madam," said the first officer "Captain Goldberg never makes mistakes."

Original Success

Before your soul descended to this world, it was known it would succeed. If not in this lifetime, in another, or yet another—eventually it will fulfill its entire mission. And in each lifetime, there will be gains made.

That knowledge itself is the origin of the soul. It is also the origin of all that exists in your world—it is the point of inspiration that brought all things to be. It lies at the essence of all things.

The power is there, and there is nothing that can stand in its way. Your job is no more than to make it real.

The Parshah In a Nutshell
Parshat Matot-Massei

Moses conveys the laws governing the annulment of vows to the heads of the tribes of Israel. War is waged against Midian for their role in plotting the moral destruction of Israel, and the Torah gives a detailed account of the war spoils and how they were allocated amongst the people, the warriors, the Levites and the High Priest.

The tribes of Reuben and Gad (later joined by half of the tribe of Menasseh) ask for the lands east of the Jordan as their portion in the Promised Land, these being prime pastureland for their cattle. Moses is initially angered by the request, but subsequently agrees on the condition that they first join, and lead, in Israel's conquest of the lands west of the Jordan.

The forty-two journeys and encampments of Israel are listed, from the Exodus to their encampment on the plains of Moab across the river from the Land of Canaan. The boundaries of the Promised Land are given, and cities of refuge are designated as havens and places of exile for inadvertent murderers. The daughters of Tzelafchad marry within their own tribe of Menasseh, so that the estate which they inherit from their father should not pass to the province of another tribe.
