A Word From the Rabbi

Dear Friends,

I am still under the impression of the amazing C.A.S.H. graduation which took place on Wednesday night at Chabad House. The entire shul and social hall were turned into a large auditorium and there must have been over 500 seats in the room, along with a large stage, backdrop, etc.

Kudos to Rabbi Glogauer and his entire team. All the teachers clearly worked extremely hard to prepare their students for the presentations. The event celebrated Commencement Exercises for both Florence Brownstein Preschool graduates (Sara and I are amongst the proud parents there…) and Max & Ruth Schwartz Elementary students.

This year the highest grade is 7th grade, which means we can begin to gear up for a genuine 8th grade graduating class next June. Judging from the wonderful program and just the scope of this week's event, one can only imagine what might be in store for us come next June.

Congrads to all the Grads! Thanks to all who worked so hard to put on an amazing event. What a way to finish another amazing year at a most amazing school! C.A.S.H. – It's right on the money!

Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Shalom M. Paltiel

News @ Chabad

No Good Deed Goes Unpunished!
Joseph & Lida Esrail put in hours upon hours of work into making the dinner and raffle a success, as they do each year. As luck would have it, their Gold Page ad was the one accidentally omitted from the Journal. We apologize for the mistake and thank them for all their help!

Blood Drive Report
by Mark Fogel

The Blood Drive Sunday was as they English would say, "Bloody Good!" We at Chabad of Port Washington should be proud of all those who came to help and who donated a part of themselves. The Kabbalah says that the soul is in the blood and all those who donated spread some of that strong Jewish Soul around. In fact, we collected twenty pints of whole red jewish Blood and because of all those, we at Chabad have saved more than one hundred (Yes, 100!) lives. Now that is something we can all be proud of. And, remember the saying, save one life and save a world - well all of you who participated saved over a hundred worlds.

A special thanks to our donors:Emmanuel Arounian, Ronit Macanian, Abbe Neissani, Jonathan Neissani, Jeff Kobrinsky, Kate Lazarovic, Sandra Effune, Simon Fuchs, Rosalie Silver, Bernice Loew, Dr. Martin Kay, Andrew Kay, Mary Finch Kay, Andre Zalta, Karen Salzbank, Stacy Pinchiaroli, David Weingast, Ellen Schaier, Aliza Cohen, Josef Cohen, Rabbi Glogauer and our last donor for the day, Rabbi Paltiel - who came running in to make sure he wasn't left out!

And to our Chabad Teen Club for helping escort our war wounded, with special thanks to Esther, Sam and Max Fogel - the Kohanim from the back of the Shul. May we go from strength to strength.

Wearing a badge and a beard Hasidic cop bridges two worlds in New York
By Jim Fitzgerald, Associated Press writer

Rockland County Police Academy in New York had never seen anything like it.

"A guy walks in with a bowler hat on, a beard, a coat coming down to his knees," says Sheriff James Kralik. "He looks like something out of 'Fiddler on the Roof.' "

It was Shlomo Koenig, now Deputy Shlomo Koenig, perhaps the only Hasidic police officer in the nation.

"Even in Israel they don't have anything like this," Mr. Koenig says, his auburn beard and sidelocks sprawling out under his wide-brimmed Smokey hat.

Mr. Koenig, 35, who runs a business that makes plastic shopping bags, had long been an unofficial liaison between the sheriff's department and Rockland's growing but insular Orthodox Jewish community. He helped translate into Yiddish or explained the customs of one group to the other. Continue

Daily Thought
Incessantly Better

When the Divine Light began to focus and contract, descending level after level, it did so to bring forth a world of continuous ascent. Since that very beginning, not a day has passed that does not transcend its yesterday.

Like a mighty river that flows to reach its source, no dam can hold it back, no ship can struggle against its current. If in our journey downstream we appear to retrogress, to take a wrong turn, to lose a day in failure, it is only because we have no map to know its way. We see from within, but the river knows its path from above.

Of one thing we have been given mastery, however: Not of our ultimate destiny, not even of the direction of our incessant flow, but of our journey. How soon will we arrive? How complete? How fulfilled?

The Parshah In a Nutshell
Parshat Behaalotecha

Aaron is commanded to raise light in the lamps of the menorah, and the tribe of Levi is initiated into the service in the Sanctuary.

A "Second Passover" is instituted in response to the petition "Why should we be deprived?" by a group of Jews who were unable to bring the Passover offering in its appointed time because they were ritually impure. G‑d instructs Moses on the procedures for Israel's journeys and encampments in the desert, and the people journey in formation from Mount Sinai, where they had been camped for nearly a year.

The people are dissatisfied with their "bread from heaven" (the manna) and demand that Moses supply them with meat. Moses appoints 70 elders, to whom he emanates of his spirit, to assist him in the burden of governing the people. Miriam speaks negatively of Moses and is punished with leprosy; Moses prays for her healing and the entire community waits seven days for her recovery.
