A Word From the Rabbi

Our thoughts and heartfelt prayers are with our brothers and sisters in Israel, the families of the kidnapped soldiers and victims of terror. What can each one of us do to make a difference? Visit our website, to find out: www.chabadpw.org. Let us not underestimate the power of good! With a single good deed on our part, here and now, we can each contribute toward the victory and safety of our fellow Jews in Israel.

In light of the crisis in Israel, this Shabbat is an especially important time for prayer. I invite you to join us in Shul this Shabbat for a prayer for the people of Israel and and to give each other strength. Shabbat morning services begin at 9:30 am; may all our prayers be answered!

Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Shalom M. Paltiel

Daily Quote
Five things happened to our forefathers on the 17th of Tammuz: the Tablets were broken, the daily offering [in the Holy Temple] was discontinued, a breach was made in the city walls, and Apostamus burned the Torah and placed an idol in the Temple

The Yiddishe Grandma
submitted by: Martin Levine

A Jewish grandma and her grandson are at the beach. He is in the water and she is standing on the shore not wanting to get her feet wet, when all of a sudden, a huge wave appears from nowhere and crashes directly onto the spot where the boy is wading.

The water recedes and the boy is no longer there. Swept away. She raises her hands to the sky as she screams and cries, "Lord, how could you? Haven't I been a wonderful grandmother? Haven't I been a wonderful mother? Haven't I kept a kosher home? Haven't I given to B'nai B'rith? Haven't I given to Hadassah? Haven't I lit candles every Friday night? Haven't I tried my very best to live a life that you would be proud of?"

A voice booms from the sky, "Okay, okay!" A few minutes later, another huge wave appears out of nowhere and crashes on the beach. As the water recedes, the boy is standing there, smiling and splashing around as if nothing had ever happened.

The voice booms again. "I have returned your grandson. Are you satisfied?" She responds, "He had a hat."

Repair

Deeper than the wisdom to create is the wisdom to repair.

And so, G‑d built failure into His world, so that He could give Man His deepest wisdom. To repair.

The Parshah In a Nutshell
Parshat Pinchas

Aaron's grandson, Pinchas, is rewarded for his act of zealotry in killing the Shimonite prince Zimri and the Midianite princess: G‑d grants him a covenant of peace and the priesthood.

A census of the people counts 601,730 men between the ages of 20 and 60. Moses is instructed on how the Land is to be divided by lottery among the tribes and families of Israel. The five daughters of Tzelafchad petition Moses that they be granted the portion of the land belonging to their father, who died without sons; G‑d accepts their claim and incorporates it into the Torah's laws of inheritance.

Moses empowers Joshua to succeed him and lead the people into the Land of Israel. The Parshah concludes with a detailed list of the daily offerings, and the additional offerings brought on Shabbat, Rosh Chodesh (first of the month), and the festivals of Passover, Shavuot, Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Sukkot and Shemini Atzeret.
