A Word From the Rabbi

Dear Friends,

The preparations are well underway for our Annual Dinner celebrating the fifteenth anniversary of Chabad of Port Washington and the new expansion to our facility. At this time I appeal to you, my dear congregants, supporters, school parents and friends, for your help:

The annual dinner is the single most important fundraiser of the year. The success of the dinner is imperative to ensure that we are able to meet our financial responsibilities in terms of our considerable annual operational budget. Thank G‑d, our Chabad has been growing by leaps and bounds in every area, be it shul, dayschool, Hebrew school, camp, teen club etc. All of these wonderful projects are expensive. Each year our projects expand, and so does our budget. We need your help!

Visit the website http://www.chabadpw.org/: You can now do everything online from placing ads, reserving seats, choosing the text for your ads, etc. Payments can also be made on line in a secure manner.

Please consider making a generous donation to the dinner and journal effort. Please open your heart and try to stretch yourself a little bit to help make this a successful event. Journal ads range from $100 to $18,000; give what you can give. Purchase a few tickets and attend the dinner personally. Please do your share which will add up cumulatively to the success we need and are hoping for. Help us to continue bringing the warm, welcoming message of “Judaism with a Smile” to your family and to the community.

For the bold and brave ones out there: How about garnering up the courage to approach your friends to purchase a pair of dinner tickets? Perhaps you can approach some of your regular vendors to support us with a journal ad, large or small; your gardener, pediatrician, dentist, stock broker, contractor, drycleaner, furrier, electrician, plumber, hairdresser, personal trainer, limo driver, others etc. Please call Maria at my office or email her mailto://[email protected] and she will send you some ad blanks to give to your vendors. You'd be surprised how they might respond. Often they are more than happy to donate something to your charity to show their gratitude to you for your patronage. You're helping them feel good, and you're helping Chabad pay some bills. It's a win-win!

I want to thank our dedicated dinner committee member (those who attended the meeting and those who couldn't make it) for getting on the team. If you get a call from one of our committee members asking for your support, please be courteous, and generous!

Thank you all! Shabbat Shalom!

Rabbi Shalom M. Paltiel

Shabbaton/Graduation for Hebrew Reading Course Graduates
By Dr. Chaya-Nesya Glogauer

The Friday night after Passover was a special one at Chabad of Port Washington. The Hebrew Reading Crash Course celebrated its graduation Shabbat dinner. Despite the absence of some of the star students, David Weingast, Rhonda Kaplan, Francene Frede, Gary Book, there were over 30 people who enjoyed the sumptuous spread. Ken Goch and Len Savran are still raving about the Gefilte fish! Ellen Savran praised the warm atmosphere of the evening for which she thanked Rabbi Noteh Glogauer, whose wife, Dr. Chaya-Nesya Glogauer taught the class.

Yao Savran shared her experiences from Passover in Thailand and her husband Adam moved everyone with the story of how his quest to return to his authentic Jewish roots began. The dinner could not have happened without the contributions of all who attended: Special thanks to Chana Buchman, Shiffy Gottlieb and Esther-Dinah Glogauer who prepared the fish, salads and deserts. Chana warmed our hearts as always with her insightful comments. Joel Avelarde shared how his learning of Hebrew makes his journey in Judaism more meaningful. Nooshin Sadigh came with her own tribe of supporters including Dr. Sadigh her husband, and their children, her mother and her sister Dr. Shirin Soleymani and her husband, as well as their kids.

Following the moving comments of Reb Zelig Sanders, Dr. Soleymani shared some of his personal experiences in his escape from Iran . The dinner would not have been complete without Rabbi Paltiel, the spiritual leader of Chabad of Port Washington joining us for desert with Berele and Mendel.

Reserve the date of June 11, 2006, 8:30 AM to come by to Chabad to give blood. We are inviting the entire community of Port Washington to participate. The goal is to collect 26 pints of blood for the Long island Blood Service. This is a mitzvah. We can literally save lives with this small act.

Question
What Do I Do If I Don't Believe?
If your faith in G‑d is not enough to get you out of bed in the morning, what about G‑d's faith in you?

Four Completed Lives
There was Ari, 15, who used to say that "life was too short to waste on anger." Noah, 6, was extra nice to children who had trouble making friends. Adira, 5, was strong-willed and carefree. Natan, 4, had Down syndrome and loved to play guitar and sing.

Party Time
Jono and Gefilte fish stand in front of a backdrop and say stuff. For five minutes. It's funny- trust me.

Daily Thought
Progressive Failure

There are two ways to ascend: You can step upward, leaving one foot in its place as the other moves ahead. Or you can crouch down and jump.

This is the true meaning of failure: It is the way we have of tearing ourselves out of our past so we can leap into the future.

The Parshah In a Nutshell
Parshat Emor

The Torah section of Emor ("Speak") begins with the special laws pertaining to the Kohanim ("priests"), the Kohen Gadol ("High Priest"), and the Temple service: A Kohen may not become ritually impure through contact with a dead body, save on the occasion of the death of a close relative. A Kohen may not marry a divorcee or a woman with a promiscuous past; a Kohen Gadol can marry only a virgin. A Kohen with a physical deformity cannot serve in the Holy Temple, nor can a deformed animal be brought as an offering.

A newborn calf, lamb or kid must be left with its mother for seven days; one may not slaughter an animal and its offspring on the same day.

The second part of Emor lists the annual Callings of Holiness — the festivals of the Jewish calendar: The bringing of the Passover offering on Nissan 14; the seven-day Passover festival beginning Nissan 15; the bringing of the Omer offering from the first barley harvest on the 2nd day of Passover and the commencement, on that day, of the 49-day Counting of the Omer, culminating in the festival of Shavuot on the 50th day; a "remembrance of shofar blowing" on Tishrei 1; a solemn fast day on Tishrei 10; and the Sukkot festival — during which we are to dwell in huts for seven days and take the "Four Kinds" — beginning on Tishrei 15.

Emor concludes with the incident of a man executed for blasphemy, and the penalties for murder (death), and for injuring one's fellow or destroying his property (monetary compensation).

A Little Humor

The sheriff's office in Alamance County , North Carolina , tried everything to stop people from using fake IDs to get a driver's license, but to no avail. According to the Greensboro , North Carolina , News & Record, one industrious sheriff's deputy got fed up and concocted an ingenious plan, never before tried. He marched into the DMV waiting room and asked that everyone "with false IDs please step forward." Six did.
