 Dear Friends,
I am very proud of the community spirit that has developed over the past few years. Of late I have been seeing more and more examples of this special spirit of togetherness. Let me give you a few examples.
Alan and Robert Salzbank needed 10 people for minyans (the correct term for plural of minan is: minyonim) for morning and evening prayers so they can say kaddish for the yahrzeit of their mother, Claire of blessed memory. We sent out an email and had a huge response to both services. Edwin Effune happened to have yahrzeit that evening as well and was quite please to have a built in minyan already there for his yahrzeit as well. Incidentally, the brand new state of the art kitchen that was donated last year by the Salzbank Family was done in memory of Claire, as the plaque indicates: Claire's Kitchen. It took over a year for the kitchen to be installed and for everything to be hooked up and ready for cooking. The amazing thing is that the day the fire inspector chose to come down for the final inspection to approve our kitchen was - you guessed it - Claire's yahrzeit, this past week. I found that to be quite amazing.
Anyway, now that we are up and running (cooking with gas as Rob likes to say) another beautiful community effort is taking shape. A group is forming that will act as the "Kiddush Committee" to organize that we should have kiddush luncheons even on the Shabbats that we don't have a sponsor. The committee so far is Gary Litvak (who inspired the idea), Alan Salzbank and Lenny Lebovitch. Lenny's cholent is said to be something out of this world and he plans to share it with us on some of those "off" Shabbats. We are looking forward. It was nice to see how many of our members and friends came out for the funeral of Victor Brill and in support of Chaim (Gary) and Phil. Many people also visited their home for the shiva. They have expressed their gratitude for all this support from our community, in spite oft he fact that they have both moved out of our community more than 5 years ago.
May we share only simchas in the future and may we continue to be there for each other as one big happy family.

Passover at Chabad was busy and exciting. Very nice crowds attended all of the holiday services inspite of them falling out on weekdays. The communal seder on the first night of Passover was attended by 80 people who enjoyed a delicious meal, joyous song, stories and commentary and lots of participation from the guests, especiialy the children.
On the last night of Passover we celebrated "The Feast of Moshiach". The event was most joyous and spirited and enjoyed by all. If you missed it this year make it your business to be ther enext year (especially since Moshiach will hopefully alreayd be here by than, in which case he can join the celebration).
Last Shabbat, April 22nd, our congregation held a special service in honor of Yom Hashoah, Holocaust Rememberance Day which took place this week. Zelik Sander delivered a passionate and eloquent speech about the horrors of the Shoah which he personally witnessed and survived. Zelik spoke out against the fact that these horros were perpetrated not by ignorant peasants but by educated people, doctors in white coats, trained nurses, professional train conductors, etc. all of whom hid their anti-Semitic biases behind the cloak of academia and philosophy.
Rabbi Paltiel echoed these thoughts and pointed out that we find the very smae thing happening today regarding Israel, where anti-Jewish and anti-Israel bias is presented in our top universities in America and Europe as fact. Like the Nazis, our enemies today, in Europe and elsewhere, understand the concept that if a lie is repeated often enough is somehow becomes accepted as truth. After the speeches, p rayers were recited for the victims of the Shoah as well as for the people in Israel who were murdered last week and over the past few years, as well as for the soldiers of the IDF.
Following the services, a beautiful elaborate kiddush was sponsored by Mr. & Mrs. Nathan Sakeni in honor of the birthday of both Nathan and their son Shervin who turned 18. A warm "farbrengen" (informal gathering) took place after lunch honoring the new Hebrew month of Iyar. yom hashoah service zelik etc

This will be an excellent opportunity for our families within our community to spend a few days together in a relaxed and enjoyable environment. Don't miss this special weekend getaway with Chabad families. The program is being organized in conjunction with Chabad of the Five Towns.
The following rates include hotel charges for two nights, plus all meals and tips: $300 per adult, based on double occupancy (single supplement $75); $200 per child 12-18 (if in parents' room); $125 per child 11 and under (if in parents room); an extra room is $150; cots or cribs $15 each (up to 3 children can stay in a room with parents). MAY 11: BOARD OF EDUCATION TOWN HALL MEETING
The Port Washington Board of Education is inviting the Chabad community to a “Town Hall Meeting” which will take place at Chabad House. A date has been set for Thursday, May 11, 8:00 pm. Please call Chabad to confirm your attendance.
MAY 16: LAG B'OMER BARBECUE
Chabad Community Barbecue in honor of Lag B'Omer will take place at the Roslyn Country Club, Club Drive , Roslyn Heights ` 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM. No Charge. MAY 21: JEWISH FESTIVALS AROUND THE WORLD
“Experience the Jewish Festivals Around the World.” Hebrew School Annual Family Experience. For Chabad Hebrew School and extended families. $4.50 per participant.
MAY 29: MEMORIAL DAY PARADE
Join Chabad Social Action Committee and march with our group in
the Port Washington Memorial Day Parade. Call Maria at the office to register to march or email Mark Fogel.
MAY 31: 15th ANNIVERSARY DINNER
The Dinner will take plce at the Woodbury Jewish Center. Guests of Honor will be Michael Faltischeck, and Maurice & Jonathan Mandelbaum and Lenny & Susan Lebovitch. Adam Katz will be Dinner Chairman. Further information will be posted on our website shortly.
JUNE 11: COMMUNITY-WIDE BLOOD DRIVE
Our very active (and beloved) Social Action Committee Chairman, Mark Fogel (aka The Kohen from the back of the shul) has organized another meaningful community event. Reserve the date of June 11, 2006, 8:30 AM to come by to Chabad to give blood. We are inviting the entire community of Port Washington to participate. The goal is to collect 26 pints of blood for the Long island Blood Service. This is a mitzvah. We can literally save lives with this small act.

One is Evil. It is anger, envy, jealousy, sorrow, regret,greed,
arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false, pride, superiority, and ego.
The other is Good. It is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith."
The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his

Israel's 57th Birthday!

Here are some of the reasons I love Israel, in no particular order:
1. The clock radio rouses me with "Shema Yisrael," the Jewish pledge of allegiance, and the weather is nearly always fine.
2. On Memorial Day and Holocaust Remembrance Day, the act of remembering halts traffic.
3. The Israel Prize recognizes lifetime achievement for actresses and rabbis, scientists and singers.
