A Word From the Rabbi

Dear Friends,

I am proud to be associated with the wonderful people in our community! And for so many reasons. Here's another reason why:

This week I was contacted by a family from Montreal , Canada asking for help. Their sister is currently living at the Sands Point Nursing and Rehabilitation Center here in Port Washington and she has no family nearby to visit her and keep an eye on her. They asked if I could get some volunteers to stop in once or twice a week just so that she knows she is not alone. I said I would see what I could do. I sent out an email to some of the active women in the community asking them if they would help with this mitzvah of "bikur cholim" - visiting the sick and elderly. The response was amazing! In fact, I have been too busy to even reply to all of the emails I got from people offering to help. This is the true spirit of Ahavat Yisroel, love of your fellow Jew, which the Rebbe taught us. (It is interesting to note that the statement "Love your fellow as yourself" is in this week's Torah portion). We are truly one family, bound together by our souls. Needless to say, the woman at the nursing home will receive the proper visitation that she needs.

I would like to use this as a springboard to organize a permanent "bikur cholim" in the future. I am looking for a volunteer to coordinate the effort. If you would like to get involved please email me mailto:[email protected]All you have to do is find out from the nursing home which residents need additional visitation, and notify volunteers who will commit to designate time once a month to visit these individuals. Think of the amazing mitzvah you would have to do so much good for our fellow yidden!

Shabbat Shalom!

Oh - don't miss the special kiddush this Shabbos, the first kiddush organized by our newly formed kiddush committee, under the leadership and innovation of Gary Litvak. If you are willing to get involved let Gary know by emailing: mailto:[email protected]. Thank you Gary . (Lenny - the Cholent Man - will be out of town so we'll have to wait a bit longer to taste his delicious culinary creations. Stay tuned).

Daily Quote
One whose wisdom is greater than his deeds, what is he comparable to? To a tree with many branches and few roots; comes a storm and uproots it, and turns it on its face... But one whose deeds are greater than his wisdom, to what is he compared? To a tree with many roots and few branches, whom all the storms in the world cannot budge from its place.
— Ethics of the Fathers 3:17

Daily Thought
Self- Made Exile

There is nothing larger than a mitzvah. There is nothing more powerful than Torah. When you are occupied in these things, the whole world becomes your servant, there but to stage your actions.

Exile begins when we believe the world is a big place and we are its tiny prisoners.

The Parshah In a Nutshell
Parshat Acharei-Kedoshim

Following the deaths of Nadav and Avihu, G‑d warns against unauthorized entry "into the holy." Only one person, the Kohen Gadol ("high priest"), may, but once a year, on Yom Kippur, enter the innermost chamber in the Sanctuary to offer the sacred ketoret to G‑d.

Another feature of the Day of Atonement service is the casting of lots over two goats to determine which should be offered to G‑d and which should be dispatched to carry off the sins of Israel to the wilderness.

The Parshah of Acharei also warns against bringing korbanot (animal or meal offerings) anywhere but in the Holy Temple, forbids the consumption of blood, and details the laws prohibiting incest and other deviant sexual relations.

The Parshah of Kedoshim begins with the statement: "You shall be holy, for I, the L-rd your G‑d, am holy" followed by dozens of mitzvot (Divine commandments) through which the Jew sanctifies him or herself and relates to the holiness of G‑d. These include: the prohibition against idolatry, the mitzvah of charity, the principle of equality before the law, Shabbat, sexual morality, honesty in business, honor and awe of one's parents, the sacredness of life.

Also in Kedoshim is the dictum which the great sage Rabbi Akiva called a cardinal principle of Torah and of which Hillel said, "This is the entire Torah, the rest is commentary" — Love your fellow as yourself.

Yeshiva Skier - Submitted by Becky Freifeld

In a slalom race, the skier must pass through about 20 "gates" in the fastest time. Well, it happened that a very Orthodox yeshiva in Montreal had an exceptional skier among its students. So fast, that in practice, with tzitzis streaming out behind, he had beaten the world record several times.

After first checking to make sure none of the men's slalom races would be on the Sabbath, he tried out for and made the Canadian Winter Olympic team. With his times in the trial heats, he was the favorite for an Olympic gold medal.

Came the day of the final, the crowd waited in anticipation. The French champion sped down the course in 38 seconds, the Swiss in 38.7 seconds, the German in 37.8 seconds, the Italian in 38.1 seconds. Then came the turn of the Canadian yeshiva "bocher." The crowd waited, and waited........

Finally, after a full five minutes, he crossed the finish line."What happened to you?" screamed his coach when the skier finally arrived. Breathing hard, the exhausted yeshiva student replied, "All right, who's the wise guy who put a mezuzah on every gate?"
