A word from the Rabbi

I am proud of the 57 graduates who will be completing the first Jewish Learning Institute (JLI) course this coming Sunday at Chabad House. The course entitled Soul Maps; GPS of the Soul explored the inner workings and struggles between right and wrong inherent in each of us, and gave tools for living and growing spiritually, emotionally and mentally.

To all the graduates: Mazel Tov! Congratulations for making time in this fast-paced world to learn Torah and to explore your heritage. Congratulations for having the foresight and insight to understand the value of Torah knowledge even in these times of materialistic obsession. No doubt the knowledge you have gained will add a measure of meaning and joy to your lives.

Please consider taking advantage of the upcoming JLI Course: You Be the Judge II: Dive into the Sea of Talmud. The course is held on Sundays at Chabad, February 8 - Mar 15, 10:00 AM - 11:30 AM. Click here to register.

Shabat Shalom!

Why Does Esau Hate Jacob?
Evil exists because it is so much more powerful than good. Is there lover in the world who loves with the intensity that a hater hates? Is there a light as bright as darkness is black? Has there ever been an act of kindness unleashed with the force and ferocity contained in an act of cruelty?

the parshah in a nutshell
ParshatVayishlach

Jacob returns to the Holy Land after a 20-year stay in Charan, and sends angel-emissaries to Esau in hope of a reconciliation, but his messengers report that his brother is on the warpath with 400 armed men. Jacob prepares for war, prays, and sends Esau a large gift (consisting of hundreds of heads of sheep and cattle) to appease him.

That night, Jacob ferries his family and possessions across the Yabbok River; he, however, remains behind and encounters the angel that embodies the spirit of Esau, with whom he wrestles until daybreak. Jacob suffers a dislocated hip but vanquishes the supernal creature, who bestows on him the name Israel, which means "He who prevails over the Divine."

Jacob and Esau meet, embrace and kiss, but part ways. Jacob purchases a plot of land near Shechem, whose crown prince — also called Shechem — abducts and rapes Jacob's daughter Dinah. Dinah's brothers Simon and Levi avenge the deed by killing all male inhabitants of the city after rendering them vulnerable by convincing them to circumcise themselves.

Jacob journeys on. Rachel dies while giving birth to her second son, Benjamin, and is buried in a roadside grave near Bethlehem. Reuben loses the birthright because he interferes with his father's marital life. Jacob arrives in Hebron, to his father Isaac, who later dies at age 180 (Rebecca has passed away before Jacob's arrival).

Our parshah concludes with a detailed account of Esau's wives, children and grandchildren, and the family histories of the people of Se'ir among whom Esau settled.

A man’s way is to serve your impoverished soul ideas— perhaps you will be wise enough to translate those ideas into deeds. But a woman goes straight for the stomach and the core. She tells you, "This is who you are and this is what you must do to be who you are."
