A word from the Rabbi

I would like to invite you to join me in a “Morning of Tribute” in honor of the 14th Yahrzeit (anniversary of passing) of the Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Schneerson of righteous memory. By now you should have received an invitation in the mail as well as online for this event which will take place next Sunday, June 29th, 11AM to 12:30PM at our Chabad House (details are below).

The Rebbe is the inspiration to our Chabad House, as well as the thousands of other such centers around the world. He singlehandedly inspired young Chabad rabbis and their wives to go out and dedicate their lives to Jewish outreach, connecting with other Jews from all backgrounds and levels of observance.

Long before it was fashionable, the Rebbe tore down the barrier that separated “religious” or Orthodox” from the rest of the Jewish community, insisting that each and every one of us is an equally and integral part of Hashem’s beloved people. He taught love and non-judgmental caring for each and every individual Jew. The spirit of inclusiveness that you find at Chabad in Port Washington, or at any other Chabad, is due completely to his instruction and teaching.

As such, it is fitting that all of us who have benefitted from the Chabad House come out to honor his memory as we mark his yahrzeit. If Chabad House has raised your level of Jewish observance, made a prouder Jew or given your children more knowledge of their Judaism, why not come out to honor and say “thank you” to the man who is responsible for it: The Rebbe.

Shabbat Shalom!

Rabbi Shalom M. Paltiel

Daily Thought
The Dream

You build a dream house.

You start with a dream. The dream becomes a plan. The plan becomes a lot of dirty work. The dirty work becomes a house. If you are successful, it is the house of your dreams.

Dream, plan, dirty work, success. Why is this the fundamental strategy of all human endeavor? Because it is the story of the universe.

Those who can feel the dream, those who can read the plan, they see we are now at the finishing touches.

the parshah in a nutshell
Parshat Shlach

Moses sends twelve spies to the Land of Canaan. Forty days later they return, carrying a huge cluster of grapes, a pomegranate and a fig, to report on a lush and bountiful land. But ten of the spies warn that the inhabitants of the land are giants and warriors "more powerful than we"; only Caleb and Joshua insist that the land can be conquered, as G‑d has commanded.

The people weep that they'd rather return to Egypt. G‑d decrees that Israel's entry into the Land shall be delayed forty years, during which time that entire generation will die out in the desert. A group of remorseful Jews storm the mountain on the border of Land and are routed by the Amalekites and Canaanites.

The laws of the menachot (meal, wine and oil offerings) are given, as well as the mitzvah to consecrate a portion of the dough (challah) to G‑d when making bread. A man violates the Shabbat by gathering sticks and is put to death. G‑d instructs to place fringes (tzitzit) on the four corners of our garments so that we should remember to fulfill the mitzvot (Divine commandments).
