A Word From the Rabbi

The summer is a great time for decluttering, and with Chabad's new CLUTTERFREE program, it's never been easier! We're excited to share with you that Chabad of Port Washington has joined forces with CLUTTERFREE to turn your “once cherished” items into cash! If you have items of value that are no longer wanted in your home or office, you may want to consider donating them to be sold on ebay for CHABAD'S benefit.

This is an ongoing effort to raise funds for Chabad of Port Washington. There is no time limit to receiving items for sale. Call our CLUTTERFREE coordinator, Donna Benabou, 516-551-5785 or email [email protected] . Visit our website for more information and guidelines on this new, exciting initiative!

On another note, I'd like to thank everyone for the overwhelming response we got to our calendar campaign! Thanks to your support, we're going to be printing a beautiful new calendar this year featuring an updated design and a great new addition - birthdays of our community members! If you haven't yet participated in our calendar campaign or if you'd still like to include your family's birthays, click here so that we can include you before this goes to print!

Sabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Shalom M. Paltiel

P.S. I will be away this Shabbos along with my family as I was invited to be the Guest Speaker at Chabad of East Hampton Shabbaton. The Tanya class will be suspended this Shabbos

Life Behind Bars
We make mistakes. And we pay for them, sometimes quite dearly. Does this mean that we should ascept that we have, in effect, "lost" a portion of our life? What about someone serving a life sentence in prison?

In one corner stood a multitude of canes and walking sticks. This was the first of many visits with Yetta, an eighty-two-year-old Holocaust survivor. We sat down on her patterned couch, and soon, she began to talk...

Parshah
The Inexistence of the Universe
A fundamental principle of the Jewish faith — twice stated by Moses in our Parshah — is that "there is none else": that nothing exists aside from G‑d. Are these just words, or do they mean something that we can understand? Seven generations of Chabad rebbes, beginning with the author of the Tanya, have written on the subject

Careers

Just as you search out a material career, so you must also search out a spiritual one.

But there is a difference: With a material career you can only plow and sow and await the rains. With your spiritual career you must provide the rain as well — in other words, it is up to you to fill it with life.

the parshah in a nutshell
Parshat Va'etchanan

Moses tells the people of Israel how he implored G‑d to allow him to enter the land of Israel, but G‑d refused, instructing him instead to ascend a mountain and see the Promised Land.

Continuing his "review of the Torah," Moses describes the Exodus from Egypt and the Giving of the Torah, declaring them unprecedented events in human history. "Has there ever occurred this great thing, or has the likes of it ever been heard? Did ever a people hear the voice of G‑d speaking out of the midst of the fire... and live? ... You were shown, to know, that the L-rd is G‑d... there is none else beside Him."

Moses predicts that, in future generations, the people will turn away from G‑d, worship idols, and be exiled from their land and scattered amongst the nations; but from there they will seek G‑d, and return to obey His commandments.

Our Parshah also includes a repetition of the Ten Commandments, and the verses of the Shema which declare the fundamentals of the Jewish faith: the unity of G‑d ("Hear O Israel: the L-rd our G‑d, the L-rd is one"); the mitzvot to love G‑d, study His Torah, and bind "these words" as tefillin on our arms and heads, and inscribe them in the mezuzot affixed on the doorposts of our homes.
