We thank all who have already made reservations for the High Holidays, and for those who haven't yet done so, we urge you to rsvp today! The authorities are asking all synagogues to take all means possible to ensure the security of all participants to the High Holiday just as a precautionary measure. As such, we are planning comprehensive security throughout the services. We have been advised by the professionals that to insure proper security participants should be pre-registered and checked in upon arrival. Please make sure to register all the names of your family and any of your guests who will be joining us for the services. Click here to register online, or call in your list to Maria at the office: 516-767-TORAH. We appreciate your cooperation in this matter.

A Word From the Rabbi

We at Chabad of Port Washington join you in hope and prayer as together we approach the new Jewish year of 5767. Together we'll listen to the call of the Shofar, taste the sweetness of the Apple-and-Honey, recommit to G‑d on Yom Kippur, unite under the leafy branches of the Sukkah, and rejoice in our heritage on Simchat Torah.

Join us this year to celebrate together in our shul throughout this special month, and before the High Holidays are upon us, check out our incredible website for your pre-holiday preparation! www.ChabadPW.org/NewYear is a perfect companion and guide to the extraordinary range of traditions, practices and emotions inherent in this festive month.

The megasite includes hundreds of web pages chock full of everything from practical how-to guides, to deep mystical and Talmudic insights, to interactive games and a searchable worldwide database of High Holiday services. Utilizing a variety of advanced web technologies and an elegant design, The Jewish New Year site provides a treasure trove of information for this jam-packed season of the Jewish year.

Approaching the High Holidays is also an auspicious time to pray at the resting place of the righteousto intercede on our behalf, beseeching G‑d to grant us all a wonderful year. I will, therefore, be at the Rebbe's resting place in Queens together with some tens of thousands of other people from around the world. I would like to pray for you, as well, at the Rebbe's "Ohel." If you send me your name and mother's name (preferably the Hebrew or Yiddish names), and those of anyone else you would like me to mention, I would be glad to have them in mind as well. If there's a specific need you would like me to pray for, please mention it as well. Click here to send me your information. If you prefer, you can fax the names to 718-723-4444, or bring your letter to the Chabad Center before Friday.

Daily Thought
Exchange Of Matter

Especially with our people, it is impossible to separate between physical needs and spiritual needs. The spiritual transforms into physicality and the physical rises to become spiritual in a perpetual chemistry of exchange.

Heal the soul and the body is renewed. Heal the body and the soul is empowered.

The Parshah In a Nutshell
Parshat

The greater part of the Torah reading of Haazinu ("Listen In") consists of a 70-line "song" delivered by Moses to the people of Israel on the last day of his earthly life.

Calling heaven and earth as witnesses, Moses exhorts the people to "Remember the days of old / Consider the years of many generations / Ask your father, and he will recount it to you / Your elders, and they will tell you" how G‑d "found them in a desert land", made them a people, chose them as His own, and bequeathed them a bountiful land. The Song also warns against the pitfalls of plenty: "Yeshurun grew fat, and kicked / You have grown fat, thick, and waddled/ He forsook G‑d who made him / And spurned the Rock of his salvation" — and the terrible calamities that would result, which Moses describes as G‑d "hiding His face". Yet in the end, he promises, G‑d will be avenge the blood of His servants and be reconciled with his people and land.

The Parshah concludes with G‑d's instruction to Moses to ascend the summit of Mount Nebo, from which he beheld the Promised Land before dying on the mountain. "For you shall see the land opposite you; but you shall not go there, into the land which I give to the children of Israel."
