Security for the High Holidays

The authorities are asking all synagogues to take all means possible to ensure the sacurity of all participants to the High Holiday just as a precautionary measure. As such, we are planning comprehensive security throughout the services. We have been advised by the professionals that to insure proper security participants should be pre-registered and checked in upon arrival. Please make sure to register all the names of your family and any of your guests who will be joining us for the services. Click here to register on line, or call in your list to Maria at the office: 516-767-TORAH. We appreciate your cooperation in this matter.

A Word From the Rabbi

Oy! It's that time of year again... Rather than looking at it as a burden, we can recognize the upcoming High Holiday month of Tishrei for what it is meant to be: An annual Inspiration-Fest; it's various holidays and festival offering a smorgasbord of opportunities for spiritual empowerment and inspiration to last us throughout the entire year of 5767. Friends, since we are going to be observing the holidays anyway, we might as well enjoy them by realizing the gifts and blessings they give us for the entire year.

Chassidic thought teaches the inspirational and spiritual gift that is available to us from each of the holidays: Rosh Hashana gives us the gift of commitment; Yom Kippur forgiveness and change; Sukkot offers us the feeling of togetherness with our people, that we are one with each other and the world and never alone; Simchat Torah affords us joy for the entire year.

Let us utilize this virtual fair of spiritual empowerment. Make it your business to be there at shul to participate in as many services as possible, beginning with the Selichot prayer this Saturday night at 11:00 PM. Be there when vows are annulled the day before Rosh Hashana (9/22 @ 7AM). Don't miss Shabbat Shuva – the special Shabbat between Rosh Hashana & Yom Kippur. Of course try not to miss any of the High Holiday services. Continue with the celebration of Sukkot, both in shul and in the sukkah. Make your family feel a part of this very special celebration by purchasing your very own set of Lulav & Etrog (available through Chabad for $15!). Consider putting up your own sukkah in the backyard! (We can help you purchase one inexpensively). And culminate the festival month with Simchat Torah and the joys of dancing with the Torah – the precious gift Hashem has given us.

See you at shul!
Rabbi Shalom M. Paltiel

Membership Drive
As you know, Chabad House is a very secial place which is warm and welcoming to everyone who walks through its doors. Our membership, currently 150 families and growing, is made up of a very diverse group. Our people come from every conceivable segment of the Jewish community: Conservative, Orthodox, Reform, Sefardi, Ashkenazi, observant and secular. We all come together to learn more bout our Jewish heritage, while enjoying the support and family feeling of belonging to a community.

Last year we embarked on an active membership drive--"We Are Family"--to help increase our memberhsip family. This will make us stronger as a group, as well as help place our shul on stronger financial footings. The stronger we become the more we can offer our community in terms of programs and services. Plus, with every new family, more and more of our fellow Jews will be enjoying the Chabad experience of warm, non-judgmental, inspiring Judaism. Please help us by inviting your friends to visit our congregation and joining our Chabad House --"The Warmest Place Away From Home." For every family that you bring to our membership family, you will receive a 10% discount on your membership.

Daily Thought
For You

Everyone agrees with all the wonderful advice and ethics written in the books of the sages. Everyone agrees that this is the way to run your life. The only issue each one of us have is whether those words are truly meant for me, or for someone else in another time and another place.

If it is truth, it is meant for you, now, here.

The Parshah In a Nutshell
Parshat Nitzavim-Vayelech

The Parshah of Nitzavim includes some of the most fundamental principles of the Jewish faith:

The unity of Israel: "You stand today, all of you, before the L-rd your G‑d: your heads, your tribes, your elders, your officers, and every Israelite man; your young ones, your wives, the stranger in your gate; from your wood hewer to your water drawer."

The future redemption: Moses warns of the exile and desolation of the Land that will result if Israel abandons G‑d's laws, but then he prophesies that, in the end, "You will return to the L-rd your G‑d... If your outcasts shall be at the ends of the heavens, from there will the L-rd your G‑d gather you... and bring you into the Land which your fathers have possessed."

The practicality of Torah: "For the Mitzvah which I command you this day, it is not beyond you nor is it remote from you. It is not in heaven... It is not across the sea.... Rather, it is very close to you, in your mouth, in your heart, that you may do it."

Freedom of choice: "I have set before you life and goodness, and death and evil; in that I command you this day to love G‑d, to walk in His ways and to keep His commandments... Life and death I have set before you, blessing and curse. And you shall choose life."

The Parshah of Vayelech ("And He Went") recounts the events on Moses' last day of earthly life. "I am one hundred and twenty years old today," he says to the people, "and I can no longer go forth and come in." He transfers the leadership to Joshua, and writes (or concludes writing) the Torah in a scroll which he entrusts to the Levites for safekeeping in the Ark of the Covenant.

The mitzvah of Hak'hel ("Gather") is given: every seven years, during the festival of Sukkot of the first year of the shemittah cycle, the entire people of Israel — men, women and children — should gather at the Holy Temple in Jerusalem, where the king should read to them from the Torah.

Vayelech concludes with the prediction that the people of Israel will turn away from their covenant with G‑d causing Him to hide His face from them, but also with the promise that the words of the Torah "shall not be forgotten out of the mouths of their descendants."
