A Word From the Rabbi

Dear Friends,

Wow! What a great celebration of 15 years! The delightful reception set the tone for a wonderful Dinner evening, beginning with the school choir, which moved us to tears with the song on the Holocaust and then lifted our spirits with their upbeat “I Believe” song of Jewish survival. The school video was a homerun – giving us a glimpse of all the action at Chabad Academy of Science and the Humanities.

Our esteemed honorees—Mr. Michael Faltischek, Lenny and Susan Lebovitch, Maurice Mandelbaum and Jonathan Mandelbaum—spoke eloquently and briefly and the Rabbi went on and on as usual. The spontaneous Chasidic dance was great and Carol Arnold’s voice over was fantastic (she should be doing this professionally!) Some lucky winners of the exciting raffle went home with fabulous prized and big smiles on their faces! And of course, Gary Wallin & orchestra put the final touches to a wonderful evening.

The honorees and I were touched by all who made the effort to join us at the dinner last night and truly appreciate the thoughtfulness of the many who submitted journal ads and contributions over the last several weeks. It's been most encouraging to see that our community and friends value and appreciate the vital work carried out by Chabad.

I would also like to express our overwhelming gratitude to the guest of honor, the dinner chairmen, to all on the committee and countless volunteers for their tireless efforts in making the dinner the tremendous success it was.

Wishing you a very Happy Shavuos and I look forward to seeing you in Shul!

Rabbi Shalom Paltiel

News at Chabad

Baby Paltiel's Bris
According to tradition, we don’t extend invitations to a bris as it is so special and significant, that one would be unable to turn down such an invitation and would be required to attend. Therefore, Sara and I are notifying you of the bris of our son and it would be most meaningful to us to have you join us at this special celebration to be held tomorrow, Friday June 2nd, following services. Of course, with the dinner and all the exciting events of this week, we didn’t have time to make phone calls, so please consider this a personal note.

Shavuot Humor

This is a little known tale of how G-D came to give us the Ten Commandments.

G-D first went to the Egyptians and asked them if they would like a commandment.
"What's a commandment," they asked.
"Well, it's like "THOU SHALT NOT COMMIT ADULTERY" replied G-D.
The Egyptians thought about it and then said, "No way, try someone else."

So then G-D went to the Assyrians and asked them if they would like a commandment.
They also asked, "What's a commandment?"
"Well," said G-D, "it's like, 'THOU SHALT NOT STEAL' ".
The Assyrians immediately replied, "No way. That would ruin our economy."

So finally G-D went to the Jews and asked them if they wanted a commandment.
They asked, "How much?"
G-D said, "They're free."
The Jews said, "Great! We'll take TEN."

What Is Torah?
The Torah is a guidebook. A contract. Identity. Vision. A daughter. And a wife...

Tanagers
They seem just as human as the others. They bleed when cut, and the blood is always red. A gentile could eat cholent and a Jew could own a baseball team. Are they one species or two?

The Parshah In a Nutshell
Parshat

Completing the head-count of the Children of Israel taken in the Sinai Desert, a total of 8,580 Levite men between the ages of 30 and 50 are counted in a tally of those who will be doing the actual work of transporting the Tabernacle.

G‑d communicates to Moses the law of the "Sotah", the wayward wife suspected of unfaithfulness to her husband. Also given is the law of the Nazir who forswears wine, lets his or her hair grow long, and is forbidden to become contaminated through contact with a dead body. Aaron and his descendents the Kohanim are instructed on how to bless the people of Israel.

The leaders of the twelve tribes of Israel each bring their offerings for the inauguration of the altar. Although their gifts are identical, each is brought on a different day and is individually described by the Torah.

Daily Thought
Talking to Himself

He talks with Himself, entertained by His own thoughts. The thoughts imply a background, which is the world. But the Torah, those are the thoughts themselves.

And we? Our souls are the self with whom He speaks.
