A word from the Rabbi

Oy! It's that time of year again... Rather than looking at it as a burden, we can recognize the upcoming High Holiday month of Tishrei for what it is meant to be: An annual Inspiration-Fest; its various holidays and festival offering a smorgasbord of opportunities for spiritual empowerment and inspiration to last us throughout the entire year of 5768. Friends, since we are going to be observing the holidays anyway, we might as well enjoy them by realizing the gifts and blessings they give us for the entire year. Let us utilize this virtual fair of spiritual empowerment. Make it your business to be there at shul to participate in as many services as possible. (See the complete schedule of services below)

By now you've surely taken care of placing your High Holiday reservations for Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur. Why not set your family up for the second half of the festival month: make your family feel a part of this very special Sukkot holiday by purchasing your very own set of Lulav & Etrog (available through Chabad for $30). Also, consider putting up your own sukkah in the backyard! The sukkah is easy to assemble, can be used year after year, it's inexpensive and allows you the opportunity to do a mitzvah that goes back thousands of years! Best of all, we can deliver the sukkah right to your doorstep! Ensure that your family is included in the Holiday spirit - click here to purchase your lulav & etrog and/or Sukkah!

Best wishes for a Shabbat Shalom & Shana Tova!

Rabbi Shalom M. Paltiel

P.S. In the days leading up to Rosh Hashanah our thoughts are naturally directed heavenward together with our fervent prayers that we, our loved ones, our nation – in fact all of Hashem’s creations - be inscribed for a good and sweet new year.

I, together with many thousands of others from all walks of life, will be visiting the resting place of the Lubavitcher Rebbe of righteous memory, to offer my prayers at this holy place. If you would like me to offer a prayer on your behalf, your families behalf, or on behalf of anyone close to you I would be honored to do so. Please include your name and your mother's name (Hebrew names – if you know them) as well as the name(s) and mother's name(s) of those you would like included.

Please accept mine and Sara's warmest wishes for K’tiva V’Chatim Tova L’Shana Tova U’Metuka that you and yours be inscribed and sealed for a good and sweet year, a year filled with all of Hashem's very best brachot.

the parshah in a nutshell
ParshatNitzavim

The Parshah of Nitzavim includes some of the most fundamental principles of the Jewish faith:

The unity of Israel: "You stand today, all of you, before G‑d your G‑d: your heads, your tribes, your elders, your officers, and every Israelite man; your young ones, your wives, the stranger in your gate; from your wood hewer to your water drawer."

The future redemption: Moses warns of the exile and desolation of the Land that will result if Israel abandons G‑d's laws, but then he prophesies that, in the end, "You will return to G‑d your G‑d... If your outcasts shall be at the ends of the heavens, from there will G‑d your G‑d gather you... and bring you into the Land which your fathers have possessed."

The practicality of Torah: "For the Mitzvah which I command you this day, it is not beyond you nor is it remote from you. It is not in heaven... It is not across the sea.... Rather, it is very close to you, in your mouth, in your heart, that you may do it."

Freedom of choice: "I have set before you life and goodness, and death and evil; in that I command you this day to love G‑d, to walk in His ways and to keep His commandments... Life and death I have set before you, blessing and curse. And you shall choose life."

Daily Thought
Trust , Not Faith

People ask, "How can I have confidence in G–d? Confidence that He will take care of me, that everything will work out for the best? Perhaps I don’t deserve the best. Perhaps I’ve already messed up so bad He no longer cares about me?"

These people have trust in G–d all mixed up. Trust is not faith. Faith is something you may or may not have. But trust is something you do. Hard.

Trust is when you are dragged by the currents of a mighty riverand you cling with all your might to a rock you trust will not move. Trust is when, in times of trouble, you cleave so unshakably to the heavens that you pull them down to earth.

Trust is a mighty and heroic bonding of love. And as with all love, it is reflected in the heart of the beloved. You bond with the Eternal Rock above, and the Above bonds with you. Then you are a fit vessel for all kinds of good.

Trust changes who you are. It changes your whole world. And it is available to anybody, at any moment, no matter who they were the moment before.
