A Word From the Rabbi

Q - Why did G‑d create television? (Seriously. With all the trash and violence it transmits, why?)

A – To be able to show the Chabad Telethon of course!

I don't know if you've ever seen the annual Chabad telethon before, but it is really something to behold. Chassidic rabbis dancing with Hollywood actors and producers to raise funds for Chabad's outreach and social service programs. The annual telethon takes place this Sunday, Septmeber 9, 7:00 PM – 1:00 AM EST, WLNY Channel 55. You can also see it on the web - click here. Take the time to watch at least a part of it. I promise you will feel prouder than ever to be a Part of the Tribe!

Check out what Joey has to say about the Chabad telethon! Click here to view this hilarious, short clip. Also, view the humorous telethon promo video online, click here. And of course, feel free to forward to your friends and family...

Shabbat Shalom!

News @ Chabad

Your old car can still do one more mitzvah!!!
Your Chabad is in need of a good running car to be used by our staff for the upcoming school year. If you have that “other” car sitting in the driveway taking up space and you've been wondering what to do with it – Chabad is here to help! All you've got to do is donate it to us and we will put it to good use for our dedicated staff. Please email [email protected]. We will of course supply you with a tax deduction letter for the full market value of your vehicle.

Chabad Academy of Science & Humanities - Update
Our first few days of school have been exciting for everyone at C.A.S.H. The children came to school anxious to begin the new school year and eager to meet their classmates and teachers. Since the high holidays are so near we decided to arrange a special Rosh Hashanah program for the children. As we know, we dip apples in honey and wish each other a Sweet New Year in honor of Rosh Hashanah. In connection with this tradition and to understand the art of Bee Keeping and how honey is made, a “hands-on” demonstration will be presented by Master Bee Keeper, Ray Lackey from the Long Island Beekeepers Club. This interactive presentation will be held for the students on Tuesday, September 11th. We look forward to sharing our photos with you next week! Click here to see the exciting new initiatives that we are bringing in to the school for this new school year!

Lulav & Sukkah Orders:
Make your family feel a part of this very special Sukkot holiday by purchasing your very own set of Lulav & Etrog (available through Chabad for $30). Also, consider putting up your own sukkah in the backyard! The sukkah is easy to assemble, can be used year after year, it's inexpensive and allows you the opportunity to do a mitzvah that embraces your entire family in the same way our ancestors were embraced by Hashem’s clowds during their 40 year sojourn in the Sinai Dessert. Like I tell my media friends about an event I want them to cover: The Sukkah certainly brings with it lots of exciting, memorable visuals, smells and experiences that your family will look forward to for the rest of the year until next Sukkos. Best of all, we can deliver the sukkah right to your doorstep! Ensure that your family is included in the Holiday spirit - click here to purchase your lulav & etrog and/or Sukkah!

Question of the Week

Question of the Week:

I am a once a year Jew. I go to shule for the High Holydays, having not shown my face the entire year, and then disappear till next High Holydays. Do people like you think I'm a hypocrite for coming to shule once a year?

Answer:
Funny, I feel the opposite. I am in awe of once a year Jews. I think you are more in touch with your soul than I am...CLICK HERE to continue

Daily Thought
Childish Joy

The natural state of man, the way G‑d created us, is to be happy. Look at children and you will see.

From the wisdom of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Schneerson; words and condensation by Tzvi Freeman. To order Tzvi's book, "Bringing Heaven Down to Earth, click here.

the parshah in a nutshell
Parshat Nitzavim-Vayelech

The Parshah of Nitzavim includes some of the most fundamental principles of the Jewish faith:

The unity of Israel: "You stand today, all of you, before the L-rd your G‑d: your heads, your tribes, your elders, your officers, and every Israelite man; your young ones, your wives, the stranger in your gate; from your wood hewer to your water drawer."

The future redemption: Moses warns of the exile and desolation of the Land that will result if Israel abandons G‑d's laws, but then he prophesies that, in the end, "You will return to the L-rd your G‑d... If your outcasts shall be at the ends of the heavens, from there will the L-rd your G‑d gather you... and bring you into the Land which your fathers have possessed."

The practicality of Torah: "For the Mitzvah which I command you this day, it is not beyond you nor is it remote from you. It is not in heaven... It is not across the sea.... Rather, it is very close to you, in your mouth, in your heart, that you may do it."

Freedom of choice: "I have set before you life and goodness, and death and evil; in that I command you this day to love G‑d, to walk in His ways and to keep His commandments... Life and death I have set before you, blessing and curse. And you shall choose life."

The Parshah of Vayelech ("And He Went") recounts the events on Moses' last day of earthly life. "I am one hundred and twenty years old today," he says to the people, "and I can no longer go forth and come in." He transfers the leadership to Joshua, and writes (or concludes writing) the Torah in a scroll which he entrusts to the Levites for safekeeping in the Ark of the Covenant.

The mitzvah of Hak'hel ("Gather") is given: every seven years, during the festival of Sukkot of the first year of the shemittah cycle, the entire people of Israel — men, women and children — should gather at the Holy Temple in Jerusalem, where the king should read to them from the Torah.

Vayelech concludes with the prediction that the people of Israel will turn away from their covenant with G‑d causing Him to hide His face from them, but also with the promise that the words of the Torah "shall not be forgotten out of the mouths of their descendants."
