A Word From the Rabbi

I am delighted about the exciting Shabbat which will be taking place at Chabad this weekend. First we will celebrate Friday night dinner together as a community, complete with a delicious Shabbat meal, songs, joy and friendship.

Then on Shabbat morning, the special Tu B’Shvat celebration, honoring the New Year for Trees will take place. A delicious lunch – sponsored by Alan and Barbara Rosenzweig – will be served and we will also partake of fruits in honor of this special day.

Please join us for one or both of these events. I look forward to seeing you. Don’t miss it!

Shabbat Shalom!
Rabbi Shalom M Paltiel

BAGELS, ANYONE? GRAB ONE AT CHABAD!
The bagel table in the library on Sunday mornings is a big hit! Please feel free to take advantage of it. Congregants leaving the shul are invited to stop by for a bagel and coffee. Hebrew school parents are welcome to drop off their kids and then hang out in the library with other parents enjoying the chow. If you haven't yet experienced our bagel hour, stop by the library this Sunday - you'll surely enjoy the social atmosphere!

Community Shalach Manot - Purim Gift Baskets

It is a mitzvah to give gifts of food to friends on Purim. This is called
"Shalach Manot". One beautiful way to do this mitzvah is through the
community gifts baskets.

The way this works is this: Rather than every family preparing their own gift baskets to deliver to their friends, the shul organizes joint gift baskets. Every member of Chabad as well as Hebrew School and Day School families will receive one gift basket. Along with the basket will be a list of those families who "participated" in this particular basket, as their Purim gift to this particular family. (Size of basket will depend on number of families "participating").

The funds raised will go towards a Food Bank in Israel, so we are helping needy people in the process. It is also a great way of building community awareness and togetherness.

Watch your mail box for the forms. We ask that you fill them out and return them as soon as you possibly can so we can move ahead with ordering and delivering the baskets.

Our tech department is looking into the possibility of putting the entire
ordering process on line. We'll keep you posted.

Leave Nothing Behind

If it is permissible, we must use it for good.

If it can be elevated, we cannot leave it behind.

The Parshah In a Nutshell
Parshat Beshalach

Soon after allowing the Children of Israel to depart from Egypt, Pharaoh chases after them to force their return, and the Israelites find themselves trapped between Pharaoh's armies and the sea. G‑d tells Moses to raise his staff over the water; the sea splits to allow the Israelites to pass through, and then closes over the pursuing Egyptians. Moses and the Children of Israel sing a song of praise and gratitude to G‑d.

In the desert, the people suffer thirst and hunger and repeatedly complain to Moses and Aaron. G‑d miraculously sweetens the bitter waters of Marah, and later has Moses bring forth water from a rock by striking it with his staff; He causes manna to rain down from the heavens before dawn each morning, and quails to appear in the Israelite camp each evening.

The Children of Israel are instructed to gather a double portion of manna on Friday, as none will descend on Shabbat, the divinely decreed day of rest. Some disobey and go to gather manna on the seventh day, but find nothing. Aaron preserves a small quantity of manna in a jar, as a testimony for future generations.

In Rephidim, the people are attacked by the Amalekites, who are defeated by Moses' prayers and an army raised by Joshua.
