B"H

Dear Parents,

There is really a lot to talk about this week and so I’ll try to be brief and cover all of the topics swiftly.

I want to thank our Hebrew School support staff: Ashley Shurka who is the 6th Grade teacher’s aide and Guy Greener who is the Aleph Champ teacher’s aide. Great work Ashley and Guy!

I would also like to mention what a great job our teachers have been doing. A glance through this week’s lesson summaries reveal lessons packed with activities, games, songs, skits, DVD’s and more. Way to go teachers!

For those of you wondering about Report Cards... because the year began with a 4 week High Holiday vacation followed rather closely by the Thanksgiving vacation, the actual middle of the calendar year is about the end of January. We are therefore going to incorporate the first few January sessions into the first term of Hebrew School in order to give reports that really reflect students’ progress over a more measurable amount of time.

This Friday evening marks the start of Chanukah! Be sure to check out all of the great Chanukah programs offered by Chabad (you can click the links on this email for more information). All of our programs are open to the whole community, so feel free to bring a friend. There will be a special raffle at the Chanukah Extravaganza for Hebrew School students.

Happy Chanukah,

Rabbi Weinberg

Kita Dalet: we played a Hebrew language game and worked in our workbooks

Kita Hay: worked very well on their reading and workbooks

Kita Vav: we played Hebrew hang-man. Olivia Rabin passed red! Zoe Stern passed purple!

Kita Zayin: the students should definitely try to come on time @ 9:00 to get the most out of Aleph Champ. Alex Aghravi passed from orange to yellow!

Gan - Morah Chana
Today in Hebrew School we started with a huge Aleph Bet puzzle. We made the puzzle and sang an Aleph Bet song. Then we started davening. We learned a little bit of the Adon Olam prayer and learned a new song: Hashem is here, Hashem is there, Hashem is everywhere. The class then played Dreidel and learned to recognize the letters on the Dreidel: Nun, Gimmel, Shin & Hay. After snack and break we learned the Chanukah story. The children learned why we celebrate Chanukah, why we light the menorah and why we play with the Dreidel (next week our Chanukah story books will be finished). Lastly we learned a new letter today: Dalet. The children learned 2 words that start with Dalet: dov = bear & delet=door..

Kita Aleph (1) - Morah Chava
Today Kita Aleph took one giant step into the future by introducing the latest in technological, multimedia teaching software: the Lamdeini Aleph Bet DVD! The children reviewed the letters Aleph through Dalet and were called on to read a line of letters with vowels. We played parsha Pictionary and review Jeopardy (Morah Chava is actually an aspiring game show hostess, -ed.). Then the children participated in a Chanukah treasure hunt, learning part of the Chanukah story at each stop on the way. For homework each student should bring in a ½” binder to use as an Aleph Bet Scrapbook.

Kita Bet (2) - Morah Devorah Leah
In honor of Chanukah the children learned the word Shemen = oil today and explored various foods that are made with oil. The children learned the Chanukah story through Acting! A Chanukah picture book!! and A Chanukah DVD!!! We learned 2 Chanukah songs: I Have a Little Dreidel & Antiochus, the Wicked King. We then played a review board game.

Kita Gimmel (3) - Morah Rivkah
Today in class after a great Davening, we had a little writing quiz and then learned the letter Samech. We finishing learning the Chanukah story and learned all about the various customs that we do on Chanukah. The children then worked so hard on creating a class Chanukah performance.

Kita Dalet (4) - Morah Ellana
In Davening today we learned some new Brachot – how to say them and what they mean. The students learned the Chanukah story by acting it out and we culminated with a exciting game of Dreidel (this was really fun!) Our Torah-pedia curriculum found us exploring the concept of Rosh Chodesh (the Jewish month). The Jewish calendar is a lunar calendar and we learned about how the months work, how we celebrate the new month, as well as the lesson of renewal that the moon holds for all of us. In Hebrew writing we played a review game in which the students tried to find Hebrew words that contain the letters that we have learned so far and then to write the words down. For homework the students should write the letter Zayin 10 times.

Kita Hay (5) - Morah Mushky
Morah Mushky could not be here this week and she was replaced by Morah Leah Horowitz. Spencer Rabin was our chazan for davening today. The class worked very hard today making and performing Chanukah skits. We then played Chanukah I-Spy. For homework the students should complete the Parsha worksheet.

Kita Vav (6) - Morah Chaya
Unfortunately Morah Chaya has come down with a real winter malady and has returned to the motherland of Scotland for some chicken soup and TLC from mom. We have been fortunate to hire Rabbi Aryeh Kay, an experienced educator, to replace her during her absence. Today the class plumbed the depths of the Chanukah story with various activities, stories and worksheets.

Kita Zayin (7) - Morah Bracha
We began the day by davening (praying) the entire morning prayers and everyone had a chance to make the blessing on the Tzitzit. We then learned 2 new letters in writing: Chet & Tof. Next we played a high action, full contact review game of team connect four. We then delved into an in depth exploration of the differences between Chanukah & Purim as reflected in the various toys we play with on those holidays. We learned the story of Yehudis and discussed our Chanukah plans. For homework it is very important that the students review their Hebrew letter writing.
