A Word From the Rabbi

Dear Friends,

Words can not express my gratitude and joy at the most amazing birthday present prepared for me by my dear wife, Sara. As many of you know, Sara organized a “surprise” (Sara was the one surprised – when I announced that I had accidentally been receiving the emails) tefillin party last Sunday at Chabad. Click here to see photos.

It is hard to describe how I felt when I walked in on Sunday morning at 9:00 AM to a shul filled with perhaps 75 men, some of whom I haven't seen since Yom Kippur, all wearing tefillin and the catchy event T-Shirt! My first reaction was: I feel like a rabbi in a candy store! Some of the women from our community also joined the festivity and prayed with us, and joined us in the social hall for a brunch of herring, lox and bagels, and plenty of chatting and schmoozing. What a beautiful morning this was! Some said we should throw a tefillin party once a month…

Click here to view more photos!I remind you that we do have a tefillin club – where you can drop by on Sunday mornings for a really quick “hit ‘n run” wrap. Come to the shul between 9am-9:15 am, or come to the library between 11:30am-Noon any Sunday and we'll get you wrapped up and out the door in 2 minutes or less. Starting soon, there will also be bagels and spreads in the library to go along with the tefillin. (Of course the goodies are open to all, men and women).

I want to thank all who participated on Sunday, and the numerous others who offered their good wishes to me on my 40th. Thank you Sara and Tammy Ruben - for pulling the project off so flawlessly. (Glen wins the award for being the first man with a T-Shirt!) May we celebrate good times with one another, and may each of them bring us closer to each other, and closer to Hashem!

Shabbat Shalom!
Rabbi Shalom M. Paltiel

Chanukah News!

With Chanukah just 4 weeks away, we have commissioned the construction of a brand new 12’ Menorah for Chanukah to be placed on Main Street near the LIRR. This decorative menorah will be attractive in design and color, and will be lit with real fire each night of Chanukah. See schedule of lighting by clicking here. The main event will be on Sunday, December 17th at 4:00 pm.

Other Chanukah News: We are adding two new public menorahs in our area. An 8’ menorah will stand proudly in Manhasset, in the park across the street form Town Hall, which will be officially lit in a ceremony on Sunday, December 17th at 6:30 pm in the presence of Town leaders and the community. There will also be an 8’ menorah in front of Village Hall in Manorhaven. This is all in addition to the menorahs that we display in the superstores: King Kullen Port Washington, King Kullen Manhasset, Stop & Shop, and North Shore Farms. When visiting these establishments during the Chanukah season please make appoint of thanking the manager for displaying the Menorah.

Question
Is G‑d an Agnostic?
I think G‑d is also agnostic. He sits there perpetually wondering whether He exists or does not exist. Out of His questioning, a whole world is generated—with beings like us that go around asking, "Is this for real, or what?"

Daily Thought
Representatives

We are representatives of Above. And as such, live two lives at once:

We are free-thinking, independent beings.

And we are no more than messengers of Above.

It is a play of opposites in a single being. Nothing gives the One Above such pleasure.

The Parshah In a Nutshell
Parshat Chayei Sarah

Sarah dies at age 127 and is buried in the Machpeilah Cave in Hebron, which Abraham purchases from Ephron the Hittite for 400 shekels of silver.

Abraham's servant, Eliezer, is sent laden with gifts to Charan to find a wife for Isaac. At the village well, Eliezer asks G‑d for a sign: when the maidens come to the well, he will ask for some water to drink; the woman who will offer to give his camels to drink as well, shall be the one destined for his master's son.

Rebecca, the daughter of Abraham's nephew Bethuel, appears at the well and passes the "test". Eliezer is invited to their home, where he repeats the story of the day's events. Rebecca returns with Eliezer to the land of Canaan, where they encounter Isaac praying in the field. Isaac marries Rebecca, loves her, and is comforted over the loss of his mother.

Abraham takes a new wife, Keturah (Hagar) and fathers six additional sons, but Isaac is designated as his only heir. Abraham dies at age 175 and is buried beside Sarah by his two eldest sons, Isaac and Ishmael.
