A Word From the Rabbi

Dear Friends,

I am extremely proud of the great accomplishments our day school (C.A.S.H.) has been making in every area. Our enrollment is at capacity awaiting more space in the new building to be available. Our grades on the standardized tests came back beyond great (see details in this email) indicating true excellence in our educational program. The Gruss Foundation, the benefactors who donated our Technology Lab and sponsored the E2K Science & Math program for advanced students, have now donated a high tech computer lab for our pre-schoolers! We ought to salute the efforts of our principal Rabbi Glogauer and his dedicated team of professionals for these and many more amazing accomplishments. Our enrollment for the school year of 2007-2008 has opened on November 1st . Already some classes are filled to capacity! Mazel tov to “G” and his team!

After completing this school year, Rabbi Glogauer will be completing six very successful years at our school. In July, he and his family will be moving on to Sydney, Australia where he will take up the principalship of the Yeshiva Academy there, a Chabad-run K through 12 day school with over 600 students. We are proud of his accomplishments and wish him continued success in his administrative career.

This past summer, a search committee set out to find a proper replacement to be able to take over the leadership of our school and build on the successes of the past six years. The search committee consisted of the following individuals:

Shelly Cohen, President, C.A.S.H. PTA ~ Rabbi Noteh Glogauer, Principal, C.A.S.H. ~ Rabbi Nochem Kaplan, Director of Association of Chabad Day Schools , United States & Canada ; Member, C.A.S.H. Advisory Board ~ Manny Malekan, C.A.S.H. parent; Communal Leader ~ Dr. Roy Nelson, Board Member & Past President, Port Washington School District Board of Education; Member, C.A.S.H. Advisory Board ~ Sara Paltiel, Executive Director, C.A.S.H. ~ Rabbi Shalom M. Paltiel, Dean, C.A.S.H.

The Search Committee was assisted by Joel Paul & Associates, a nationally acclaimed head-hunting firm with extensive experience in placing high level administrators in Day Schools across the US .

We have hired Robyn Mandor, who comes to us with more than 30 years of educational experience. She began her career as a teacher in Public School system for more than 20 years. She later served as Assistant Principal for 4 years in the Jamaica , Queens Public Schools. She then went on to become Assistant Principal in the Searingtown

School in the Manhasset District (a school with more than 800 students) for five years, followed by four years as principal of that school. Finally, she was appointed Assistant Superintendent of the entire Manhasset Public School District where she served for 4 years. As you can tell, Robyn comes to us with impeccable credentials and vast experience, which will come together with her professional manner and wonderful personality. We look forward to her leading our school to the next level. Robyn has already begun working at C.A.S.H. part time, working together with Rabbi Glogauer to insure the most successful transition of our school from one successful administrator to another. If you would like to meet Robyn please call the school to make an appointment.

Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Shalom M. Paltiel

News from C.A.S.H.

Chabad Academy of Science & the Humanities

When parents ask, “How does the level of secular education at C.A.S.H. compare to the top local public schools?” What is the answer? What are the facts? Based on the 2005 New York State Grade 4 achievement exams, you can now tell all your friends – THERE'S NO COMPARISON!

Congratulations to our C.A.S.H. Grade 4 Students for outscoring the public schools in Nassau County on the 2005-2006 NY State Education achievement exams. With the assistance of Mrs. Greenblatt's outstanding preparation, the student's hard work and your support, our results demonstrate the level of education that you have come to expect from our outstanding academic program.

We are proud to share with you the results from the 2005-2006 NEW YORK STATE EDUCATION DEPARTMENT English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematic Assessment Results for Chabad Academy of Science and the Humanities. Scores on the tests are divided into four levels of achievement, click here to view.

In 2004 the Board of Regents appointed a Math Standards Committee, consisting of Math teachers and other experts statewide, to revise the math learning standards. Their recommendations, adopted by the Regents in 2005 after extensive positive public comment, called for introducing more advanced math content into the lower grades in elementary and middle school. The 2006 Grade 4 Math tests were more difficult that tests in previous years.

Statewide Math scores in grade 4 dropped by about 7 percentage points. Thus, the results at C.A.S.H. are even that much more impressive. Be proud that your child attends one of the top academic institutions in the State! If you have any questions about the above information, please do not hesitate to give me a call at 516-767-8672.

We look forward to continued results from our students as we continue to uphold the reputation for being one of the strongest academic programs on the North Shore .

Looking forward to sharing more good news with you in the future,

Rabbi Noteh Glogauer
Principal

Daily Quote
Just as it is incumbent upon every Jew to put on tefillin every day, so is there an unequivocal duty which rests upon every individual, from the greatest scholar to the most simple of folk, to set aside a half-hour each day in which to think about the education of his children.
— Rabbi Sholom DovBer of Lubavitch (1860-1920)

Paradise

Rabbi Sholom Ber of Lubavitch used to say: If the hedonists would know what pleasure can be found in G‑dliness, they would abandon everything to chase after it. It is the source of all pleasures.

And it is hidden within every simple mitzvah and every word of Torah.

The Parshah In a Nutshell
Parshat Vayeira

G‑d reveals Himself to Abraham three days after the first Jew's circumcision at age 99; but Abraham rushes off to prepare a meal for three guests who appear in the desert heat. One of the three — who are angels disguised as men — announces that, in exactly one year, the barren Sarah will give birth to a son. Sarah laughs.

Abraham pleads with G‑d to spare the wicked city of Sodom. Two of the three disguised angels arrive in the doomed city, where Abraham's nephew, Lot, extends his hospitality to them and protects them from the evil intentions of a Sodomite mob. The two guests reveal that they have come to overturn the place, and to save Lot and his family. Lot's wife turns into a pillar of salt when she disobeys the command not to look back at the burning city as they flee.

While taking shelter in a cave, Lot's two daughters (believing that they and their father are the only ones left alive in the world) get their father drunk, lie with him, and become pregnant. The two sons born from this incident father the nations of Moab and Amon.

Abraham moves to Gerar, where the Philistine king Avimelech takes Sarah — who is presented as Abraham's sister — to his palace. In a dream, G‑d warns Avimelech that he will die unless he returns the woman to her husband. Abraham explains that he feared he would be killed over the beautiful Sarah.

G‑d remembers His promise to Sarah and gives her and Abraham a son, who is named Isaac (Yitzchak, meaning "will laugh"). Isaac is circumcised at the age of eight days; Abraham is 100 years old, and Sarah 90, at their child's birth.

Hagar and Ishmael are banished from Abraham's home and wander in the desert; G‑d hears the cry of the dying lad and saves his life by showing his mother a well. Avimelech makes a treaty with Abraham at Be'er Sheva, where Abraham gives him seven sheep as a sign of their truce.

G‑d tests Abraham's devotion by commanding him to sacrifice Isaac on Mount Moriah (the Temple Mount) in Jerusalem. Isaac is bound and placed on the altar, and Abraham raises the knife to slaughter his son. A voice from heaven calls to stop him; a ram, caught in the undergrowth by its horns, is offered in Isaac's place. Abraham receives the news of the birth of a daughter, Rebecca, to his nephew Bethuel.
