In this week's Port Washington News you'll notice an insert - a 4 page beautiful flyer about our Chabad House's programs and services.
Thank you is in order to Matt Harris, a talented advertising person (thedrinkagency.com) and dedicated member of our Chabad for putting together this beautiful, informative piece. Thanks also to Rob Salzbank (rampagestudios.com) for shooting the photos. And to Mira Bernstein for agreeing to be photographed for the ad.
While on the subject of thanks:
Offering up thanks to G‑d for all of His abundant blessings towards us and our families is an important part of this time of year, and a big part of what we do in Shul during the High Holidays. What about thanks we owe to our fellow human beings who've been there for us in one way or another during the past year?
It is well known that our prayers for forgiveness are only valid for sins committed against G‑d. Sins against our fellow human being require us to ask forgiveness of the offended party and make amends.
I suggest the same with giving thanks. While our High Holiday prayers offer plenty of opportunities to give thanks to Hashem, we ought to make it our business to thank our fellow as well.
Allow me this opportunity to thank each of you who play an important role in our Chabad community, each making a real difference in their own way.
A special thanks to our generous donors whose generosity allows us to do what we do to bring "Judaism with a Smile" to the community. Please click here for a listing of many of the contributions that were made during the past year. On behalf of all who benefit from our CHABAD HOUSE and its activities, THANK YOU!
Shana Tova & Shabbat Shalom!

The Matchmaker's Secret
By: Rabbi Aron Moss | Sydney, Australia
Question: I guess I wasn't supposed to be a matchmaker. I set up five couples, and none of them worked out. Most of them said I wasn't even close. Yet I thought each time that they were perfect matches. I have a friend who has made seven successful matches - and she didn't really know the people that well at all. Is there a secret to matchmaking that I don't know about?
Answer: Yes, there is a secret every good matchmaker knows. They haven't got a clue how to make matches. Because knowing two people separately has little to do with knowing how they would be together...

Crossing the Border
Wakefulness and sleep affect only the external activity of the intellect; what we know with the very essence of our being, we know no less when plunged into the deepest slumber.

Are We Supposed to Be Afraid of G‑d?
The difference between love and respect is that when I love, I am preoccupied with my feelings toward you; when I respect, I am focusing on your presence rather than mine...

Running on Empty
She says that she is running on empty. She says that there is vast, useless space inside of her. She looks the same on the outside. But things are subtly falling apart.

Parshat Ki Tavo
Moses instructs the people of Israel: When you enter the land that G‑d is giving to you as your eternal heritage, and you settle it and cultivate it, bring the first-ripened fruits (bikkurim) of your orchard to the Holy Temple, and declare your gratitude for all that G‑d has done for you.
Our Parshah also includes the laws of the tithes given to the Levites and to the poor, and detailed instructions on how to proclaim the blessings and the curses on Mount Gerizim and Mount Eival-as discussed in the beginning of the Parshah of Re'eh. Moses reminds the people that they are G‑d's chosen people, and that they, in turn, have chosen G‑d.
The latter part of Ki Tavo consists of the Tochachah ("Rebuke"). After listing the blessings with which G‑d will reward the people when they follow the laws of the Torah, Moses gives a long, harsh account of the bad things-illness, famine, poverty and exile-that shall befall them if they abandon G‑d's commandments.
Moses concludes by telling the people that only today, forty years after their birth as a people, have they attained "a heart to know, eyes to see, and ears to hear." |
