Chanukah Wonderland!

A Word from the Rabbi

Chanukah is in the air!

We at Chabad are gearing up for our most exciting Chanukah ever. And we need your help!

- The Grand Menorah Lighting Celebration in both Port and Manhasset will take place, as usual, on the first night of Chanukah - this year, December 20th. (6pm in Port; 7:30pm in Manhasset).

- Look for our Menorah displays in King Kullen Port and Manhasset, Stop N Shop, North Shore Farms, Corner of Main St & Shore Road, Chabad House Lawn, Town Hall Park in Manhasset, and of course the giant '12 steel Menorah at the LIRR.

- NEW FOR THIS YEAR: Chanukah Wonderland! On Sunday, December 25 join us for an amazing afternoon which will give your kids and grandkids a grand Chanukah time while filling them with Chanukah pride! Lots of entertainment and activities are being planned, so mark your calendar not to miss this very exciting event. Details above and on our website.

You can help by attending both events, inviting friends and family to attend as well (Click here for a the Chanukah events page which you can forward to your list), and by thanking the host stores and event sponsors.

Let there be light - during Chanukah and every day!

Mini Israel
Florence's Mini Israel

COMING SOON TO OUR CHABAD:
Florence's Mini Israel, A Children's Israel Experience

Florence's Mini Israel is an immersive, multi-sensory indoor playground experience of fun for preschoolers and young children.  It will include a traditional 'shuk' (marketplace), an archaeological site, a camel sitting by a water-well and the hills of an ancient Judean city. Plus, our very own recreation of the Kotel, the Western Wall, a live video feed from the Kotel, a puppet theater, and a cozy "cafe and pizza shop" for birthday parties and celebrations.  This center will promote awareness and solidarity with Israel amongst the local Jewish community, while offering the community at large an opportunity of exploring Israel and its culture.

This project, scheduled for completion in Spring of 2012, is sponsored by Dr. Martin Borwnstein, who founded the Florence Brownstein Preschool in 1992 in memory of his mother Feigah bas Moshe of blessed memory.

Question of the Week
A Pot of Murky Waters
By: Rabbi Aron Moss | Sydney, Australia

Question: I never used to work on myself. I didn't think I had to. I am a nice guy and always was. Only recently have I got involved in Judaism and become more introspective and spiritual. But a weird thing has happened. I don't think I am as nice as I used to be. I have discovered a temper I never knew I had. And I feel more tempted to do immoral things than ever before. This really started since I'm coming to shul more and learning more about my religion. Does this make sense? Shouldn't becoming more observant make me better not worse?

Answer: There's good news and bad news. The bad news is, you were never a completely nice guy. No one is. The good news is, now you can do something about it. You can learn how by observing a pot on the fire.

Fill a pot with water from the tap and examine it. Does the water look clean? Of course it does, it is straight from the tap. Then put the pot on a fire, and watch it boil. Observe that as the water gets hotter, impurities start to float to the top. Sediment and dirt and all kinds of contaminants suddenly seem to appear from nowhere.

Daily Thought
Conquest Through Surrender

The mind that demands all things enter its realm will contain nothing. The mind that allows for knowledge beyond mind will contain everything.

Every theory has a premise, every explanation an assumption. Every wise person prefaces his pursuit of wisdom by acknowledging, "This I will not be able to explain. This will remain in wonder."

The Parshah In A Nutshell

Parshat Vayishlach
Jacob returns to the Holy Land after a 20-year stay in Haran, and sends angel-emissaries to Esau in hope of a reconciliation, but his messengers report that his brother is on the warpath with 400 armed men. Jacob prepares for war, prays, and sends Esau a large gift (consisting of hundreds of heads of livestock) to appease him.

That night, Jacob ferries his family and possessions across the Jabbok River; he, however, remains behind and encounters the angel that embodies the spirit of Esau, with whom he wrestles until daybreak. Jacob suffers a dislocated hip but vanquishes the supernal creature, who bestows on him the name Israel, which means "he who prevails over the divine."
