I want to thank all of you who came out last night for a very moving evening honoring the memories of Rivky & Gaby Holzberg and all of the victims of this horrific terror attack. Looking around the room you couldn’t find a dry eye anywhere which was a clear indication of how indeed we are truly one family.
It’s time to fight back. Let’s hold onto the positive energy of Jewish unity and the call to action this tragedy has awakened within every one of us. Let’s keep it alive and bring it into concrete action - Some Ideas:
- Jewish women, le’ts keep Rivky’s candle burning, visit www.FridayLight.org to join a growing group of women of who are committed to lighting Shabbat candles every week to be sure Rivky’s candle is never extinguished, rather grows into a huge flame.
- Jewish men, pull out the old Bar Mitzvah tefillin, dust them off, make a commitment to put them on, if not every day, once a week. I know this is bold for many of us, but these times call for bold action, Jewish pride and solidarity, if we are going to diffuse the darkness of hate and evil with the light of goodness and Torah. If you need help obtaining tefillin, checking your old pair to see if they are still kosher, or for a lesson on how to use tefillin email rabbi@chabadpw.org. It will be my greatest pleasure to set aside time to walk you through to the observance of this very important mitzvah.
- Seek out opportunities for Random acts of kindness to your family, friends, and even total strangers.
- Do something “Jewish” for the family thereby raising the level of Jewish observance and awareness for the entire family; e.g. affix kosher mezuzahs on each doorpost, add books of Torah and prayer to the family library, or resolve to celebrate Shabbat dinners regularly as a family.
- Make a commitment to yourself to recharge your Jewish battery by attending Shabbat services at least once a month. These times call for unity, spending time with fellow Jews doing Jewish things. Shul is just that.
 Finally, the resolution we made last night as a community to recite the first line of the shema every morning and every evening – these most holy words pronouncing our faith in G‑d and Torah were uttered throughout history by our Jewish brothers and sisters, at the moment of Kiddush Hashem when their lives were taken because they were Jewish. No doubt Rivky and Gabi uttered these same words during their last moments. Click here to view the text of the short prayer and to print out so that you can keep it handy.

LEE ASCHENBRENNER SUFFERS ACCIDENT WHILE CROSSING SHORE ROAD. Unfortunately, as people were gathering last night for the memorial tribute, Mr. Lee Aschenbrenner got hurt during a tragic accident as he attempted to cross the street on Shore Road. All those gathered at the event joined in a special Psalm praying for his health and Rabbi Paltielvisited him at North Shore Hospital  immediately after the service. We ask the entire community to say prayers for his complete recovery having in mind his Hebrew name, Lipeh Eliezer ben Sara. This tragic accident serves as a wakeup call of how important a crossing guard is to avoid G‑d forbid any future tragedies, please click here to sign a petition to the 6th precinct of Nassau County Police. It's so important that Chabad should be provided with crossing guards for the safety of its worshippers and those who attend its programs. Please forward this petition notification to friends in the community as we believe the more signatures we collect the better chance we have at making this happen and avoiding G‑d forbid another tragedy.
Our hearts go out to the Aschenbrenner family, all of us are with them in heartfelt prayer that this wonderful individual, Mr. Lee Aschenbrenner, who has been a pillar in the local Jewish community as well as a leader in the Port Washington greater community for so many decades, be granted a miraculous recovery to continue all of his good deeds and mitzvot together with his beloved wife, Tee, and the entire Aschenbrenner family.

Jacob leaves his hometown Be'er Sheva and journeys to Charan. On the way, he encounters "the place" and sleeps there, dreaming of a ladder connecting heaven and earth, with angels climbing and descending on it; G‑d appears and promises that the land upon which he lies will be given to his descendents. In the morning, Jacob raises the stone on which he laid his head as an altar and monument, pledging that it will be made the house of G‑d.
In Charan, Jacob stays with and works for his uncle Laban, tending Laban's sheep. Laban agrees to give him his younger daughter Rachel — whom Jacob loves — in marriage, in return for seven years' labor. But on the wedding night, Laban gives him his elder daughter, Leah, instead — a deception Jacob discovers only in the morning. Jacob marries Rachel, too, a week later, after agreeing to work another seven years for Laban.
Leah gives birth to six sons — Reuben, Shimon, Levi, Judah, Issachar and Zebulun — and a daughter, Dinah, while Rachel remains barren. Rachel gives Jacob her handmaid, Bilhah, as a wife to bear children in her stead, and two more sons, Dan and Naphtali, are born. Leah does the same with her handmaid, Zilpah, who gives birth to Gad and Asher. Finally, Rachel's prayers are answered and she gives birth to Joseph.
Jacob has now been in Charan for fourteen years and wishes to return home, but Laban persuades him to remain, now offering him sheep in return for his labor. Jacob prospers, despite Laban's repeated attempts to swindle him. After six years, Jacob leaves Charan in stealth, fearing that Laban would prevent him from leaving with the family and property for which he labored. Laban pursues Jacob, but is warned by G‑d in a dream not to harm him. Laban and Jacob make a pact on Mount Gal-Ed, attested to by a pile of stones, and Jacob proceeds to the Holy Land, where he is met by angels.

Deep Love
You cannot reach deeper within another than you reach in your own self.
If you love yourself for your achievements, your current assets, the way you do things and handle the world — and despise yourself for failure in the same — it follows that your relationship with another will also be transient and superficial.
To achieve deep and lasting love of another person, you need to first experience the depth within yourself -- an inner core that doesn't change with time or events. If it is the true essence, it is an essence shared by the other person as well, and deep love becomes unavoidable.
