A word from the Rabbi

Here at Chabad we are gearing up for a Shabbos chock-full of excitement:

Tonight we will celebrate the gift of Shabbos in a warm and joyous atmosphere with a Shabbat dinner together at the shul. Thank you Sisterhood co-presidents Sheryl Pinner and Tami Ruben for their involvement, especially in upgrading our Shabbaton dinner from “deli takeout style” to Prestige Caterer of Garden City Hotel fame (pshh... come hungry please. By the way, if you did not make plans to join us for this one, please mark your calendar for upcoming Shabbat dinners which occur monthly. All dates are marked on your Chabad calendar or click here to view).

This Shabbos is the Yahrzeit of Samuel Brownstein of blessed memory. Sam’s son, Chabad Board Member Dr. Martin Brownstein will spend the weekend with our community. We will read from Torah which Dr. Brownstein commissioned in honor of his father back in 1998 while Sam was still alive. The Torah was completed one year later after Sam had already passed away, in his memory. How special this will be to read from the Torah written in his memory on the actual day of his yahrzeit, in the presence of his son who had commissioned its writing.

As many of you know, Dr. Brownstein also honored his father in a very distinguished way by naming our shul the Samuel Brownstein Shul, and the preschool, the Florence Brownstein Preschool – after his mother of blessed memory.

Sam Brownstein was an exceptional human being. His long life was filled with extraordinary accomplishments, most notably his co-authorship of the Baron’s SAT prep text books. Click here to read the obituary that appeared in the New York Times outlining the amazing life of this individual. We at Chabad were privilegedto have him pray at our shul every Shabbos for six years, until his passing. Each Shabbos he lead the congregation in the mi shebeirach, the English Blessing of the Congregation. Each time he read those familiar words it somehow seemed fresh and new. We miss this special man, and remember him fondly and with great respect and affection.

I invite you to join us at shul for the Kiddush commemorating Sam’s yahrzeit and a farbrengen to follow.

Best wishes for a Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Shalom M. Paltiel

Daily Thought
Higher Truth

There are many truths. There is a truth for every being and for every particle of the universe —for each one reflects its Master in a different way.

To seek truth means more than finding your own truth. It means finding a truth that works for you and for the other guy, for now and forever, in this place and everywhere, for the body and for the soul, for the sage and for the young, innocent child.

The higher the truth, the fewer boundaries it knows.

the parshah in a nutshell
Parshat Vayeishev

Jacob settles in Hebron with his twelve sons. His favorite is 17-year-old Joseph, whose brothers are jealous of the preferential treatment he receives from his father, such as a precious many-colored coat that Jacob makes for Joseph. Joseph relates to his brothers two dreams he has which foretell that he is destined to rule over them, increasing their envy and hatred towards him.

Shimon and Levi plot to kill him, but Reuben suggests that they throw him into a pit instead, intending to come back later and save him. While Joseph is in the pit, Judah has him sold to a band of passing Ishmaelites. The brothers dip Joseph's special coat in the blood of a goat and show it to their father, leading him to believe that his most beloved son was devoured by a wild beast.

Judah marries and has three children. The eldest, Er, dies young and childless, and his wife Tamar is given in levirate marriage to the second son, Onan. Onan sins by spilling his seed and he, too, meets an early death. Judah is reluctant to have his third son marry her. Determined to have a child from Judah's family, Tamar disguises herself as a prostitute and seduces Judah himself. Judah hears that his daughter-in-law has become pregnant and orders her executed for harlotry, but when Tamar produces some personal effects he left with her as a pledge for payment, he publicly admits that he is the father. Tamar gives birth to twin sons, Peretz (an ancestor of King David) and Zerach.

Joseph is taken to Egypt and sold to Potiphar, the minister in charge of Pharaoh's slaughterhouses. G‑d blesses everything he does, and soon he is made overseer of all his master's property. Potiphar's wife desires the handsome and charismatic lad; when Joseph rejects her advances, she tells her husband that the Hebrew slave tried to force himself on her and has him thrown in prison. Joseph gains the trust and admiration of his jailers, who appoint him to a position of authority in the prison administration.

In prison, Joseph meets Pharaoh's chief butler and chief baker, both incarcerated for offending their royal master. Both have disturbing dreams, which Joseph interprets; in three days, he tells them, the butler will be released and the baker hanged. Joseph asks the butler to intercede on his behalf with Pharaoh. Joseph's predictions are fulfilled, but the butler forgets all about Joseph and does nothing for him.
