On April 8th the world will commemorate Yom Hashoah - Holocaust Memorial Day.
Rabbi Israel Lau, former Chief Rabbi of Israel, is the youngest survivor of Buchenwald. He was invited to speak during a ceremony at Yad Vashem two weeks ago in the presence of President Obama and Israel's PM Netanyahu. Here's what he said:
He recalled that last year he visited a Holocaust Museum in Seattle, and was greeted by a WWII veteran, who was one of the liberators of Buchenwald. The former soldier turned to the Rabbi and asked for forgiveness. He said: "I am an old man. Before I meet the Lord, I would like to ask forgiveness for arriving to Buchenwald too late!"
Turning to President Obama, Rabbi Lau concluded: "We are deeply appreciative of America's support of Israel. But please, make sure it won't be too late."
When it comes to helping another person, we must do it right away, for we may just miss the opportunity. When the opportunity presents itself to be there for someone, to provide support or assistance to a fellow who needs our help, don't delay. It may be too late!
Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Shalom M. Paltiel
P.S. Join us for our Holocaust Memorial observances this year:
- Sunday morning at 9AM for the annual Yom Hashoah Tefillin Wrap (for men and boys age 13 and up).
- Sunday 11:30am special guest speakers addressing our Shalshelet Teen program will address us, see below
- Shabbat dinner, Friday evening, April 12. Our guest speaker is Leibel Zissman. He's a fiery Jew who in spite of losing so much in the camps came away with a passion for life and for Jewishness. He became a financial success as well as a "Jewish success" raising a family of children and grandchildren who are proud of their Yiddishkeit. His story has recently been published in a book titled "I Believe" and he was interviewed extensively for a documentary called "Lion of Judah" (click here for a preview of the book and film). The guy is a true sensation... A living giant of a man. When I read the book I felt compelled to bring him to our community. This is a rare human being with a spirit that is larger than life, and he carries with him a message that is not only relevant to our past but equally to our future as a people. Please try to come if you can, I know this won't disappoint... Click here for the details of the Shabbat dinner.

Construction progress report:
At long last - our shul and social hall have been beautifully renovated. The offices, mikvah and most of the classrooms are completed as well. Installation of the gym floor began yesterday - after a serious water problem was diagnosed and corrected. So, we are well on our way to completion of the rebuilding project. Come by any time to see for yourself - it's YOUR Chabad. ENJOY IT!

New JLI course | Curious Tales of the Talmud:
Finding Personal Meaning in the Legends of our Sages
Everyone loves a good story. Knowing this, the sages of the Talmud used stories to encode messages about life that are far too deep and profound to communicate directly. This course decodes some of these extraordinary Talmudic mysteries to uncover layer within layer of insight into the nature of life, the universe, G‑d, and man.

Why is there a Key in my Challah? By: Rabbi Aron Moss | Sydney, Australia
Question: I have heard that there is a custom to bake challah with a key hidden inside for the Shabbat after Pesach. Seems like some odd superstition. What's it about?

Why There Are Miracles
We take the laws of nature too seriously. We think of the world as though it exists just as its Creator exists.
Therefore we have miracles. A miracle is a state of enlightenment that says, "Our reality is nothing but a glimmer of a higher reality. In that higher realm, there is no world. There is nothing else but Him."

Parshat Shemini
On the eighth day, following the seven days of their inauguration, Aaron and his sons begin to officiate as kohanim (priests); a fire issues forth from G‑d to consume the offerings on the altar, and the divine presence comes to dwell in the Sanctuary.
Aaron's two elder sons, Nadav and Avihu, offer a "strange fire before G‑d, which He commanded them not" and die before G‑d. Aaron is silent in face of his tragedy. Moses and Aaron subsequently disagree as to a point of law regarding the offerings, but Moses concedes to Aaron that Aaron is in the right.
G‑d commands the kosher laws, identifying the animal species permissible and forbidden for consumption. Land animals may be eaten only if they have split hooves and also chew their cud; fish must have fins and scales; a list of non-kosher birds is given, and a list of kosher insects (four types of locusts).
Also in Shemini are some of the laws of ritual purity, including the purifying power of the mikvah (a pool of water meeting specified qualifications) and the wellspring. Thus the people of Israel are enjoined to " differentiate between the impure and the pure."
