A Word from the Rabbi
Rabbi Paltiel

Progress has been slow in rebuilding our Chabad. A variety of factors complicated things and made it very difficult to move forward. Thank G‑d, things have begun to move more quickly now. Here's where we are:

Walls: Painting has been all but completed throughout the building.

Gym: The gym developed a serious leak problem after the storm. With the help of engineers and experts, the issue has been identified and is being corrected, beginning on Monday. The exterior stucco will be cut all around the gym building, and sealant material and a metal plate will be installed. This work is expected to take approx one week, after which the gym floor can be installed. So expect to be able to use the gym again sometime very soon after Passover. Hopefully, the various leagues and adult groups using the gym will be able to resume shortly thereafter. Thank you for your patience.

Classrooms: The classroom floors have been custom ordered. Each classroom will have a different "scene" to make them fun and friendly for our preschoolers. As of now, the Toddler class is completed. The remaining classrooms will be completed over the passover break.

Shul & Social Hall: This space is looking much better now that it's been painted. However, we will expanding the women's section in the shul to make it wider so it can hold two rows of seats, making it more comfortable, and allowing for more seats for busy Shabboses and for the High Holidays. This renovation will begin on Monday and is expected to last three weeks. So, again, expect to see the work completed and the carpets installed by the end of Passover.

Playground: The storm destroyed whatever was left of our old playground. We have ordered a new, much more updated playground which we expect to have installed by the end of April, to serve our preschoolers during Spring as well as our summer Day Camp campers.

Thank you: Thank you to all of you who have participated with your generous donations to our Hurricane Sandy Recovery Fund. It is not too late to participate, we still need lots of financial help to get everything done. Click here if you'd like to support this effort, making YOUR chabad more beautiful and more welcoming than before!

Shabbat Shalom,

Rabbi Shalom M. Paltiel

Question of the Week
Question of the week
Can I Befriend the Son of a Nazi?
By: Rabbi Aron Moss | Sydney, Australia

Question: I have an acquaintance who was born in Germany, but raised most of his life in the USA. His father was a member of the Nazi youth. I find this very difficult to ignore. My friend is not like his father. Yet he made a point to tell me of his father's past and his father's hatred of Jews. Can I truly befriend such a person??

Answer: There is a precedent for your question. It goes all the way back to the story of Purim.

Haman was the wicked Persian minister who plotted the annihilation of the Jewish people. Through a complex sequence of seeming coincidences that were only retrospectively recognized as miraculous, his plot was overturned, the Jews saved, and Haman executed on the very gallows he had prepared for the Jewish leader Mordechai.

We celebrate the festival of Purim to remember Haman's downfall and the victory of the Jewish people over their enemies. But there is a little known ironic addendum to the story. Haman's relationship with the Jewish people continued posthumously in a most curious way.

Daily Thought
In All Ways

People imagine a place of G‑dliness as a place for seriousness, a solemn place, a place that fills you with trepidation. The fact is, where there is G‑d, there is joy.

That is why our every moment is a moment to celebrate and fill with joy. Because at every moment we are fulfilling our mission of bringing G‑dliness into this world. Not just the obviously joyful matters, such as meditation, study, prayer and good deeds, but also regular, mundane activities and the ways we earn an income and go about life-all are ways by which we know Him and bring Him into our world.

Why Did Moses Break the Tablets?
I heard that his reason was the Torah-mandated capital punishment for idolatry. If he would give the Torah to the Jews at this point, they would be condemned to death, so he instead broke the tablets to save the Jews. Is this correct?
Women
Cheating Ourselves
I wonder how often we allow ourselves to cheat. Sure, it can be easier or quicker to look as if we are doing the right thing, when in truth we are just taking the shortcut. But at what point do we recognize that truly, the only one we ultimately cheat is ourselves?

The Parshah In A Nutshell
Parshat Ki Tisa
The people of Israel are told to each contribute exactly half a shekel of silver to the Sanctuary. Instructions are also given regarding the making of the Sanctuary's water basin, anointing oil and incense. "Wise-hearted" artisans Betzalel and Aholiav are placed in charge of the Sanctuary's construction, and the people are once again commanded to keep the Shabbat.

When Moses does not return when expected from Mount Sinai, the people make a golden calf and worship it. G‑d proposes to destroy the errant nation, but Moses intercedes on their behalf. Moses descends from the mountain carrying the tablets of the testimony engraved with the Ten Commandments; seeing the people dancing about their idol, he breaks the tablets, destroys the golden calf, and has the primary culprits put to death. He then returns to G‑d to say: "If You do not forgive them, blot me out from the book that You have written."

G‑d forgives, but says that the effect of their sin will be felt for many generations. At first G‑d proposes to send His angel along with them, but Moses insists that G‑d Himself accompany His people to the promised land.

Moses prepares a new set of tablets and once more ascends the mountain, where G‑d reinscribes the covenant on these second tablets. On the mountain, Moses is also granted a vision of the divine thirteen attributes of mercy. So radiant is Moses' face upon his return, that he must cover it with a veil, which he removes only to speak with G‑d and to teach His laws to the people.
