A Word from the Rabbi
Rabbi Paltiel

Your prayers are making miracles! Sydney Livingston, the 8 year old Port Washington girl injured in the sledding accident, is making a miraculous recovery. The hospital staff are referring to her as the "miracle girl." Mom and dad say it's thanks to the prayers of so many that things turned around, almost as suddenly and drastically as they had gone tragically bad on that fateful Sunday, 12 days ago.

I've always been proud to be a part of this amazing community. Now I'm prouder than ever. Port is a place where everyone, from all faiths, rallied behind one little girl and her family, offering help, support, love and prayers. So many of our Chabad people, including many who don't know the Livingstons, have been praying daily on her behalf, and emailing me regularly to see how she's progressing. How special! Well, your prayers are being answered. (Keep them up though... there's still a long hall ahead. I recommend reciting Psalm 20 daily - click here for link - then add your own personal prayer. Keep in mind the name Sydney Livingston. Also please pray for Tamar bas Esther, a local woman who also needs a miraculous recovery).

I call this our town's own "Purim Miracle." Unlike Passover, the Purim miracle was one that was orchestrated through the natural order. No part of the story is miraculous in itself; put together the pieces and you see the unmistakable hand of G‑d behind the mask (which is why we wear masks on Purim). Sydney too had the best medical treatment available. Yet, the hand of G‑d is quite obvious.

Shabbat Shalom and Happy Purim,

Rabbi Shalom M. Paltiel

P. S. Please join me tomorrow night, 6:30-8pm for megillah reading and a Purim party. Open bar, finger food, shmoozing and celebrating. (See below all the details of both evening and daytime programs.)

Purim
Get into the Purim spirit! If you've ever walked through our doors, you surely know that our Center is bursting with activity and excitement throughout Purim.

So don't miss out on this very special day! Click here for our full purim schedule which you can find on our website. Don't forget to do the following 4 Mitzvot of Purim:

1. Be sure to hear the Megillah twice, once on Saturday night and then again on Sunday. (We will have megillah readings at Chabad Sat night at 6:30PM and Sunday at 9:30AM and 11AM.)

2. Celebrate a Purim Feast, including bread and wine, sometime during the day on Sunday, with family and friends. (No Kiddush is recited but the wine or vodka is consumed...)

3. Give Gifts of Food, usually a gift basket of ready made prepared foods, to at least one friend. This should be done individually by each member of the family.

4. Give money to the poor on this day. If you don't have access to poor on this day, we will have charity boxes at shul throughout Purim day especially for this purpose.

Should you lie to avoid hurting your parents' feelings, protect your kids from a frightening truth, or keep a dying man from knowing his fate? How about speaking a white lie to keep a surprise party secret, or exaggerating in an interview to get a job? Where do you draw the line?

Question of the Week
Question of the week
Happiness is Your Choice
By: Rabbi Aron Moss | Sydney, Australia

Question: I know Purim is supposed to be a happy holiday, but when I look at myself and my life I see no good reason to be happy. On the contrary, I have plenty of reasons to be miserable. Am I supposed to be able just switch on happiness at will?

Why Is It Called the Fast of Esther?
The rest of the people might have felt they should be fasting, but were not permitted to, since they needed every ounce of strength to defend themselves against Haman's venomous hordes. Esther, sitting in the palace, was the only one who had nothing to fear, and so was permitted to fast...

The Parshah In A Nutshell
Parshat Tetzaveh
G‑d tells Moses to receive from the Children of Israel pure olive oil to feed the "everlasting flame" of the menorah, which Aaron is to kindle each day, "from evening till morning."

The priestly garments, to be worn by thekohanim (priests) while serving in the Sanctuary, are described. All kohanim wore: 1) the ketonet-a full-length linen tunic; 2) michnasayim-linen breeches; 3) mitznefet or migba'at-a linen turban;4) avnet-a long sash wound above the waist.

In addition, the kohen gadol ("high priest") wore: 5) the efod-an apron-like garment made of blue-, purple- and red-dyed wool, linen and gold thread; 6) the choshen-a breastplate containingtwelve precious stones inscribed with the names of the twelve tribes of Israel; 7) the me'il-a cloak of blue wool, with gold bells and decorative pomegranates on its hem; 8) the tzitz-a golden plate worn on the forehead, bearing the inscription "Holy to G‑d."

Tetzaveh also includes G‑d's detailed instructions for the seven-day initiation of Aaron and his four sons- Nadav, Avihu, Elazar and Itamar-into the priesthood, and for the making of the golden altar, on which the ketoret ("incense") was burned.
