This Shabbat, Mr Howard Birnbach, an attorney and former (and future) candidate for judgeship, will deliver the sermon in my stead. His topic: The Founding Fathers and the Torah. He will propose that much of the wisdom employed in founding this blessed republic, the first of its kind in history - one that provides true freedom and equality to all people regardless of race, color, national origin, religion or lifestyle - stems from the Torah. I encourage you to attend; this should be quite interesting and informative.
Birnbach's appearance will give me "the day off" from preparing a sermon, which I especially appreciate during this very busy time of year for me when I prepare for Chabad's annual dinner...
A Chabad rabbi, by definition, wears the hat of fundraiser as well, the one responsible to make sure the organization is funded so that it can keep up all of its programs for the community. Take a minute to imagine what type of funds an organization like Chabad of Port Washington needs in order to operate each year; the facility, its utilities, upkeep, rabbis, staff, buses, insurances and programs. And the list goes on.
I ask of you - give me a hand...
If you've already made your dinner gift - I thank you.
If you haven't yet made your dinner gift, I ask that you do it today. Please give generously. The dinner is our major fundraiser of the year. In addition to purchasing tickets, consider making a larger gift to be acknowledged on the dinner's Scroll of Honor. Try to give a little more than you did in the past. Help me do this part of my job, so that our Chabad is financially sound. This will free me up to spend more time on "my other hat" - teaching Torah and helping people and families in my role as rabbi and teacher.
I hope to see you at Shul on Shabbat, and I look forward to your support of the dinner.
Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Shalom M. Paltiel

More kosher meat to be available at Stop N Shop
In our quest to make more kosher products available in our community, and in response to requests by some people for this, we've been in touch with the management of Stop N Shop.
The following items will be carried starting this Friday. S&S will be adding certain varieties as they see the movements. They look forward to serving the needs of the community.
Please make a point of thanking the manager in charge, Mr Paul Gallo, for going out of his way to accommodate the local kosher consumers.
Also, if you shop elsewhere in town, ask your manager to do the same. If they make a commitment to increase their kosher products, especially meat and poultry, we will announce it in our weekly email. Let's work together to bring more kosher to our town.

When There's No Way Out
By: Rabbi Aron Moss | Sydney, Australia
Question: Some things need to move with the times. One thing I find ridiculous is the two day festivals outside of Israel. Like we just had Shavuot, which the Torah says is celebrated for one day, but we celebrated it for two days. I know the reason. In times of old, each new month was announced when witnesses saw the new moon in Jerusalem. Outlying communities were never quite sure about the exact date, and so Diaspora Jews kept festivals for two days just in case. But today we do know the date, there is no confusion. So why still today do we keep two days outside of Israel for festivals that those in Israel celebrate for only one day?
Answer: Just like every person has a body and a soul, so too every Jewish law has a body and a soul. The body is the apparent, obvious, surface-level explanation of the law. But the soul is its inner meaning, its spiritual significance, its deeper truth. And just as a person should not be judged merely on appearances, for beneath their facade they have much more to them than meets the eye, so too we should never rush to dismiss a Jewish law as irrelevant without investigating its inner meaning...

The River from Eden
"A river went out from Eden to water the garden."
There is Eden, and there is the garden.
Eden is a place of delight, far beyond the garden, beyond all created things. Yet its river nurtures all that grows in that garden.
The garden is wisdom, understanding, knowing-where all of creation begins.
Adam is placed in the garden, to work with his mind, and to discover the transcendent Eden flowing within.
The objective of all man's toil in this world is to work to reach beyond his own mind, higher than mind at all. Not to a place where the mind is ignored, but rather, to its essence, to the inner sense of beauty and wonder that guides it. To Eden.

Why We Need Priests
The common goal of every Jew is to bring the light of Torah to the world. The approach may differ: some may use strictness, others love.

Abusing G‑d
At first, I was awed by his courage. But the next day I realized, to my horror, that this man was "renting out" the siddur to people in exchange for bread . . .

Parshat Behaalotecha
Aaron is commanded to raise light in the lamps of the menorah, and the tribe of Levi is initiated into the service in the Sanctuary.
A "Second Passover" is instituted in response to the petition, "Why should we be deprived?" by a group of Jews who were unable to bring the Passover offering in its appointed time because they were ritually impure. G‑d instructs Moses on the procedures for Israel's journeys and encampments in the desert, and the people journey in formation from Mount Sinai, where they had been camped for nearly a year.
The people are dissatisfied with their "bread from heaven" (the manna), and demand that Moses supply them with meat. Moses appoints 70 elders, to whom he imparts of his spirit, to assist him in the burden of governing the people. Miriam speaks negatively of Moses, and is punished with leprosy; Moses prays for her healing, and the entire community waits seven days for her recovery. |
