21st Anniversary Dinner

A Word from the Rabbi

A shul is meant to be a home; a community - an extended family.

This Shabbos, our Chabad community will be celebrating the Bar Mitzvah of Sammy Litvak, a young man whose family has been involved in our Chabad for over 13 years. In fact, Sammy's bris took place at our Chabad... 13 years ago. (I don't want to sound too nostalgic, but... how time has flown by!)

At a bris we bless the child: "Just as he has entered into the covenant (bris), so too may he enter into Torah study, the Chupah and good deeds." What is the meaning to this wish? Why evoke all future life-cycle events at the bris? One possible explanation might be: Just like the bris is celebrated with the child surrounded with so much love, family and community, the same should be at all future lifecycles. Essentially, we pray that the child remain true to his family and community for the rest of his life.

As we celebrate Sammy's "BIG DAY" tomorrow we can certainly proudly say this prayer has come true!

Allow me to segue:

This year our Chabad House celebrates its 21st anniversary. Thank G‑d, we are beginning to see many of our little ones go through, not only bar mitzvah but also college graduation, and marriage. (We recently celebrated with the Neissani family on the birth of Jessica's baby; what a thrill that was).

Please join us to celebrate our 21st Anniversary Dinner, June 21st, which will take place right here in our own Chabad House. Click here for details and to RSVP. YOUR Chabad community, YOUR extended family, needs your help and support, financially as well as by being there at our "BIG DAY". The evening won't be complete without you!

Shabbat Shalom,

Rabbi Shalom M. Paltiel

Question of the Week
Question of the week
What's Wrong with Judaism?
By: Rabbi Aron Moss | Sydney, Australia

Question: The festival of Shavuos is to me an example of everything that's wrong with Judaism. On the one hand it is the time of the giving of the Torah - supposedly a holy and spiritual event. So how do Jews celebrate this sacred revelation? By eating cheese blintzes. Do you see why I am attracted to eastern spirituality? They don't just eat at every opportunity.

Answer: A great thinker once said: "Show me how you eat blintzes, and I will show you your soul." Or something like that.

Eating blintzes on Shavuos expresses the core message of Judaism. And there is no better way to celebrate a sacred moment than by eating the most indulgent and pleasurable dessert...

Daily Thought
For You

Everyone agrees with all the wonderful advice and ethics written in the books of the sages. Everyone agrees that this is the way to run your life. The only issue each one of us has is whether those words are truly meant for me, or for someone else in some other time and place.

If it is truth, it is meant for you, now, here.

The Parshah In A Nutshell
Parshat Naso
Completing the headcount of the Children of Israel taken in the Sinai Desert, a total of 8,580 Levite men between the ages of 30 and 50 are counted in a tally of those who will be doing the actual work of transporting the Tabernacle.

G‑d communicates to Moses the law of the sotah, the wayward wife suspected of unfaithfulness to her husband. Also given is the law of the nazir, who forswears wine, lets his or her hair grow long, and is forbidden to become contaminated through contact with a dead body. Aaron and his descendants, the kohanim, are instructed on how to bless the people of Israel.

The leaders of the twelve tribes of Israel each bring their offerings for the inauguration of the altar. Although their gifts are identical, each is brought on a different day and is individually described by the Torah.
