Anyone who attended Chabad during the past 10 years knew well of Mr. Zelik Sander. Affectionately referred to "Reb Zelik", this extraordinary person embodied joy, humor and positivity, and brought these qualities forth in anyone he encountered. This, in spite of his being a survivor of Auschwitz and losing every single member of his large family to Hitler.
Every morning Reb Zelik would be the first to arrive at Chabad for morning services. Most days he'd be the one to unlock the front door and lead the services. To see his Tefillin straps on his left arm, right over the painful tattoo reading '135094' was to see a living miracle. It was a portrait of unbridled faith in the face of the ugliest of evil, and optimism in the face of the most unimaginable horrors.
Reb Zelik passed away last September (10th of Elul) at the age of 97. He is sorely missed, on a very personal level, by many in our community.
I had the privilege of spending the final 2 hours of his life here on earth standing at his bedside. At that time I made a promise to him that each year our community would properly mark Holocaust Remembrance Day in his honor. When he heard these words, he smiled, difficult as it was. This was his last smile here on earth. (Surely he now smiles up above, as he is reunited with his beloved Sally, parents, siblings, nephews and nieces who he loved so dearly).
Please help me keep my promise. Please join me Sunday morning for services at 9AM (for men and women) and "Tefillin Wrap" (for the guys) in honor of the "6 million". This is followed by brunch at 10AM and a fascinating lecture by Rabbi Dr. Nissen Mangel, himself a survivor of the Holocaust, at 10:30AM, entitled: Belief in G‑d after the Holocaust (RSVP please by clicking here or by calling Stephanie @ the office). The program will end at noon.
Additionally, the Shabbat Kiddush luncheon is sponsored by Alan and Barbara Rosenzweig in honor of the "6 million" and words of tribute will be said during the Shabbat service as well.
I look forward to seeing you this weekend. Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Shalom M. Paltiel

Split Your Personality
By: Rabbi Aron Moss | Sydney, Australia
Question: Why did the Israelites have to pass through the Red Sea? On my map of the Middle East, the route from Egypt to Israel is directly through the desert. The sea is totally out of the way. G‑d led them on a detour, trapping them between the sea and the chasing Egyptians, and then split the sea. Does G‑d have no sense of direction?
Answer: The Israelites passing through the Red Sea was not a geographical necessity, but a spiritual one. At the Red Sea, we were shown the power of the human soul.
The earth is comprised of oceans and continents, sea and dry land. The difference between the two is that on dry land, all is open and visible. The trees, animals, mountains and people that occupy it are all easily recognizable. The sea on the other hand is a big blue expanse of mystery. Though the sea is teeming with life, when you look at it you can identify nothing, all is hidden beneath the surface.
So it is with a person. Our personality has two layers: our sea, and our land. What we know of ourselves, our visible strengths, our tested talents and our known abilities, the elements of our character that we are aware of, these comprise the dry land of our personality. But below the surface of our character lies a vast sea of latent talents, inner strengths and untapped abilities that we never knew we had. In the depth of our soul lies a reserve of dormant energy waiting to be discovered. This is our sea, and even we ourselves are unaware of what lies there.
How can we access this reservoir of potential? How can our sea become dry land? There is only one way. And we know it from the encounter at the Red Sea...

Fierce & Humble
To achieve wonders takes a fearless heart and an open mind.
True, courage and openness are two opposite directions for the soul to travel at once. But they take place in two distinct chambers: The mind awakens to its nothingness, and the heart G‑d gave you is bared in all its brazen power.

Parshat Shemini
On the eighth day, following the seven days of their inauguration, Aaron and his sons begin to officiate as kohanim (priests); a fire issues forth from G‑d to consume the offerings on the altar, and the divine presence comes to dwell in the Sanctuary.
Aaron's two elder sons, Nadav and Avihu, offer a "strange fire before G‑d, which He commanded them not" and die before G‑d. Aaron is silent in face of his tragedy. Moses and Aaron subsequently disagree as to a point of law regarding the offerings, but Moses concedes to Aaron that Aaron is in the right.
G‑d commands the kosher laws, identifying the animal species permissible and forbidden for consumption. Land animals may be eaten only if they have split hooves and also chew their cud; fish must have fins and scales; a list of non-kosher birds is given, and a list of kosher insects (four types of locusts).
Also in Shemini are some of the laws of ritual purity, including the purifying power of the mikvah (a pool of water meeting specified qualifications) and the wellspring. Thus the people of Israel are enjoined to " differentiate between the impure and the pure." |
