Passover with Chabad

A Word from the Rabbi

On Monday morning, standing with their father, Rabbi Yonatan Sandler, outside the Otzar HaTorah school where he devoted himself to the Jewish people of his native France, the ugliest side of human barbarity reared its head snuffing out their precious lives together with that of Miriam Monsonego.

I'm kind of numb. Some people turn to me for answers on "how could this happen?" I'll save you time. I don't know. All that I can think about right now is what does Rebbetzin Chava Sandler answer her one year old surviving son when he wakes up in middle the night crying "Daddy! Daddy!"

Her next child Gavriel was only four years old when his short life came to an end. (How painfully ironic - this little boy was named after Gavriel Holtzberg, the Shliach in Mumbai who was similarly killed for the sin of being Jewish...) But one of the beautiful pictures of him is sucking a lolly on the day of his Opshernis, the traditional hair cutting ceremony at the age of three; just before he would have started reading this week's Parsha. I couldn't help but notice the connection.

The Midrash (and subsequent Jewish tradition) tell us that when young Jewish children are brought for their first day of learning in "Cheder" the first verse they read is from this week's Parsha at the opening book of Vayikra Leviticus.

Why? Because since the book of Leviticus is primarily focused on the service in the Sanctuary of God, "let these pure ones (the children) come and engage with these pure ones (the holy Temple service)."

So just a few months ago little Gavriel Sandler, like millions of Jewish children for generations before him, probably started his first day of Cheder at Gan Rashi Preschool in Toulouse, by "engaging with these pure ones."

Please God "let these pure ones" Gavriel, Aryeh, their holy father Rabbi Jonathan, and little Miriam, "come and engage with these pure ones" their little brother, their mother, bringing them comfort from their special place in heaven, and with the coming of Moshiach speedily in our days, engaged and reunited in a warm embrace with them again.

Wishing you a Shabbat of Pure Comfort and Strength,

Rabbi Shalom M. Paltiel

Photo Gallery of Florence's Mini Israel Indoor Playground

We are delighted to announce the opening of FLORENCE MINI ISRAEL - a 300 SF Disney-like children's Israel experience.

Florence Mini Israel was built by Dr. Martin Brownstein to honor the memory of his mother Florecne, Feigeh bas Moshe A"H. The Florence Brownstein Preschool, established 20 years ago by Dr. Brownstein, was also dedicated in memory of Florence.

An inaugural dedication was held in a private ceremony on Sunday, March 4th, where Dr. Brownstein cut the ribbon and affixed the MEZUZAH. A birthday party was held at that time for Martin's grandson Jeremy. Here's the part that is "bashert" (meant to be) without a doubt: AFTER the date had been selected, it was realized this was the EXACT HEBREW DATE of the 20th YAHRZEIT (anniversary of passing) of Florence, in whose memory this is taking place.

Florence Mini Israel will be used as the indoor playground for Florence Brownstein Preschool. It will also serve as a birthday party venue. It will also invite community groups, private and public school groups who want to give their students a taste of Israel, right here on the North Shore.

Exclusive by Elie Wiesel: The Tragedy in Toulouse

Will the hatred of the Jews ever finally vanish? Will Jewish children always be in danger?

This time, a murderer slew four Jews: a teacher and three young children.

When a blood-thirsty Jew-hater wants to kill Jews, he goes first to the Jewish schools. Jewish children are his primary target.

It's always been this way. This is what Pharaoh, King of Egypt did, what Hitler did. And this is what happened now...

Parent and Protetor

The fact that a parent feeds and clothes a child does not mean he may do with the child whatever he wants... The parent himself is a possession of G‑d; how much more so their child, who is only entrusted to the parent for safekeeping.

Question of the Week
What Makes You Jealous?
By: Rabbi Aron Moss | Sydney, Australia

Question From Bluma (age 8):
It says in the Ten Commandments "Do not be jealous." Does that mean that if I see my friend wearing a dress that I really like, I can't be jealous and want the same dress, even if I don't say anything to my friend?

Answer: We are all jealous. It is impossible not to be. As long as we are human, we see what others have and wish we could have it too. But that isn't always bad. There are three types of jealousy. Wicked jealousy, dangerous jealousy, and good jealousy...

Daily Thought
Infinite & Intimate

Does G‑d then laugh? Is He so vulnerable as to cry over failure and rejoice in success? Does He who brings heaven and earth into existence truly love with the passion of a frail human being? Can the Infinite Light feel regret, just like a creature trapped within the tunnel of time?

But G‑d desired Man with all his struggles. The proof: We are here. And G‑d looked down from His lofty realm beyond love and laughter, beyond passion and remorse, down into this thought of a human being . And He said, "Shall he then be alone in his place and I in Mine? Is this oneness?"

So He arranged a meeting place, in the boundless emotions that are the fabric of Man's soul and are reflected within the bowels of the Infinite Light. So that in love and laughter and compassion and awe and beauty, man and G‑d could find one another, and neither would be alone.

The Parshah In A Nutshell
Parshat Vayikra
G‑d calls to Moses from the Tent of Meeting, and communicates to him the laws of the korbanot, the animal and meal offerings brought in the Sanctuary. These include:

-The "ascending offering" (olah) that is wholly raised to G‑d by the fire atop the altar;

-Five varieties of "meal offering" ( minchah) prepared with fine flour, olive oil and frankincense;

- The "peace offering" (shelamim), whose meat was eaten by the one bringing the offering, after parts are burned on the altar and parts are given to the kohanim (priests);

- The different types of "sin offering" (chatat) brought to atone for transgressions committed erroneously by the high priest, the entire community, the king or the ordinary Jew;

- The "guilt offering" (asham) brought by one who has misappropriated property of the Sanctuary, who is in doubt as to whether he transgressed a divine prohibition, or who has committed a "betrayal against G‑d" by swearing falsely to defraud a fellow man.

This being the Shabbat that falls on or before the first of Nissan, we also read the section of Hachodesh (Exodus 12:1-20), which relates G‑d's words to Moses in Egypt two weeks before the Exodus, instructing us to set the Jewish calendar by the monthly new moon, and to regard Nissan as the "head of months." G‑d also instructs to bring the Passover offering, to eat it with matzah and bitter herbs, and to abstain from leaven for seven days.
