Many years ago an anti Semitic tyrant gathered all the Jews of his town and ordered them to abandon their faith or suffer expulsion. Everyone in the room was filled with terror and broke down crying, with one exception. One jolly old man in the back of the room burst into laughter. Each additional hate-filled rant by the madman brought forth some more uncontrollable laughter. The tyrant finally turned to the old man: Foolish old man, can you tell me exactly what is funny?
"Many years ago," began the old man, "there lived a man named Pharoh. He enslaved and tortured our people. In the end, G‑d freed us. He's gone & we celebrate a holiday called Passover when we eat Matzah.
Later on there was another man named Haman who wished to annihilate our people. Again, G‑d saved us. He's gone, and we now have a holiday called Purim when we eat Hamantashen.
Then came a man named Antiyochus who banned our religious practice. He's gone, and we now have a holiday called Chanukah when we eat latkes.
As I stand here watching you spew your ugly hate, I can't help but wonder: Which foods will we eat for the holiday that will celebrate your defeat."
As we celebrate Purim next week, we recall the miracle of Jewish survival, against all odds.
Mr. Ahmadinejad, what's it gonna be this time? (Hopefully healthy & nutritious...)
Happy Purim & Shabbat Shalom!
Rabbi Shalom M. Paltiel
P.S. Don't miss our Purim celebration, PURIM LINSANITY - Wednesday night at 6:15 pm. Join us for a chance to win Delta NY Mets tickets donated by George kalinsky.
Important Purim Observacnes:
1. Be sure to hear the Megillah twice, once on Wednesday night and then again on Thursday. (We will have megillah readings at Chabad Wed night at 6:15PM and Thursday at 7AM and 9AM.)
2. Celebrate a Purim Feast, including bread and wine, sometime during the day on Thursday, with family and friends. (No Kiddush is recited but the wine or vodka is consumed...)
3. Give Gifts of Food, sometime during Thursday, usually a gift basket of ready made prepared foods, to at least one friend. This should be done individually by each member of the family. (The communal gift baskets does not fulfill the mitzvah for you; you want to give an actual food gift on Purim day itself).
4. Give money to the poor on this day. If you don't have access to poor on this day, we will have charity boxes at shul throughout Purim day especially for this purpose.

Netanyahu Praises Dedication of Jewish Leaders in Russia and Beyond
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised the dedication and achievements of Chabad-Lubavitch emissaries in Russian-speaking lands.
In remarks recorded for the Fifth Conference of the Federation of Jewish Communities of the Former Soviet Union and addressed to Russian Chief Rabbi Berel Lazar, FJC President Lev Leviev, and Rabbi Alexander Boroda, Netanyahu noted that collectively, they had reached and continue to reach hundreds of thousands of Jews across Eastern Europe and Asia.
Turning to the hundreds of rabbis stationed in communities across the former Soviet Union, he told them: "You joined the Rebbe's army of emissaries and you have done ... a tremendous job to return Jews to their heritage, to return Jews to their nation, to return Jews to each other.
"I ask that you continue your holy work for our common purpose," he concluded, "to ensure a future for the Jewish nation and to ensure an awareness of Jewish heritage."

Your Mommy or Your Wife?
By: Rabbi Aron Moss | Sydney, Australia
Question: Things have flared up between my mother and my wife. My mother insists that the family be together every Friday night dinner at her house, but my wife wants to be able to host dinners at our place too. I never missed a Shabbos dinner at home in my life, but now I am caught between my parents and my wife. And we are only married two months! Where should my loyalty be?
Answer: It is horrible to be caught between two people you love. But there is no question where your loyalty should be. The answer is found in the wedding ceremony.

Daily Thought
|
 |
Near & Far
He hides; we must search for Him.
He is here now; our hearts may speak to Him.
He is distant; we are small and insignificant.
He is close; we are His children, His beloved, His joy.
Indeed, He does not fit into our neat cubbyholes of close or distant, of hidden or present. He is all of these, all in perfect oneness.

Parshat Tetzaveh
G‑d tells Moses to receive from the Children of Israel pure olive oil to feed the "everlasting flame" of the menorah, which Aaron is to kindle each day, "from evening till morning."
The priestly garments, to be worn by thekohanim (priests) while serving in the Sanctuary, are described. All kohanim wore: 1) the ketonet-a full-length linen tunic; 2) michnasayim-linen breeches; 3) mitznefet or migba'at-a linen turban;4) avnet-a long sash wound above the waist.
In addition, the kohen gadol ("high priest") wore: 5) the efod-an apron-like garment made of blue-, purple- and red-dyed wool, linen and gold thread; 6) the choshen-a breastplate containingtwelve precious stones inscribed with the names of the twelve tribes of Israel; 7) me'il-a cloak of blue wool, with gold bells and decorative pomegranates on its hem; 8) the tzitz-a golden plate worn on the forehead, bearing the inscription "Holy to G‑d."
Tetzaveh also includes G‑d's detailed instructions for the seven-day initiation of Aaron and his four sons- Nadav, Avihu, Elazar and Itamar-into the priesthood, and for the making of the golden altar on which the ketoret ("incense") was burned. |
