Gala Banquet

A Word from the Rabbi

Everyone knows, when Oprah speaks favorably about a product or book, it'll be sold out very quickly.

If you don't have mezuzahs on each doorpost, I suggest you run out and get some before they're gone. Same with Shabbat candlesticks.

Remember when Coke decided to try the "NEW COKE"?  People weren't interested. They wanted the old, tried and true Coke - "COKE CLASSIC".

If it's the real thing, it never goes out of style!

Shabbat Shalom!

Rabbi Shalom M. Paltiel

P.S. This weekend is the Annual Convention of Chabad Women Shluchos. More than 1000 women emissaries of Chabad from around the world are in Brooklyn for the 5 day conference culminating in a Gala Banquet on Sunday. Click here for more info and to watch the Banquet live on Sunday evening. It's extraordinary.

Gabriel Project Mumbai

Jewish Volunteers to Help Children in the Slums of India

Gabriel Project Mumbai is an exciting project that brings young Jewish adults to India to help break the cycle of poverty and hunger by volunteering in food distribution and literacy among the children of the Mumbai slums. The program is in collaboration with a local NGO that runs classes for children ages 4-12 in the Mumbai slums. Young adults on the program work as volunteers cooking, packaging and delivering daily warm meals for schoolchildren, thus creating powerful incentives for parents to send their children to learn rather than to work in the streets. Volunteers also deliver basic literacy by interacting with the children, teaching them English through interaction and immersion. All the while, the volunteers live in a kosher, Shomer Shabbat environment where they learn about Indian culture, the history of Jews in India and Jewish ethics of social justice and Tikkun Olam. It is a vision for changing the lives of slum children while educating young Jewish adults in the powerful ethos of care.

Recovery

Rabbi Shais Taub, left, and Rev. Steven E. Boes, Boys Town's president, spoke with each other after a meeting.

A Rabbi's Teachings on Recovery Find a Wide Audience

On a clement winter day at the edge of the Plains, two men in black trod a kind of hallowed ground. One was a Roman Catholic priest, the Rev. Steven E. Boes, and the other a Hasidic rabbi, Shais Taub...

Photo of the Week

The children of Florence Brownstein Preschool at Chabad of Port Washington celebrated the Jewish Birthday of the Trees - Tu B'Shvat!  We had a wonderful time tasting a variety of fruits from Israel and around the world as we made colorful fruit salad and chocolate covered fruit kebabs using a chocolate fondue machine. Students decorated their own pots and planted lima beans, which are actually sprouting, and designed their own budding, almond trees. We had a chance to examine the seeds and discuss the stages a tree goes through and how we can help them to stay strong and healthy.  We certainly had a tasty, eye-opening day!

Question of the Week
Refined Search for Soulmate
By: Rabbi Aron Moss | Sydney, Australia

Question: A recent study on Jewish continuity divided the community into three categories. The inner core are those who are fully Orthodox and observant of Torah. They are not at risk. The outer layer are the Jews who are not engaged at all in Judaism, on the edge and most at risk of assimilation. Then there is a large middle layer, comprising those who are somewhat traditional, have a Jewish identity but are not religious. The study went on to say that communal funds and effort should be focused solely on the middle group. The religious core are fine, they are mostly marrying within the community and having Jewish children. The outer layer are too far gone and too hard to bring back. It is the middle who are at risk of drifting away but still within reach. Do you agree that our money and effort should focus on them alone?

Answer: This analysis makes business sense. But Judaism is not a business, and Jews are not mere potential customers. When it comes to questions of identity, the Jewish people is not governed by the rules of the market, but by rules of the soul. The study above, by dividing the community into categories, ignores the most important of those rules: All Jewish souls are intertwined...

Daily Thought
Finding Perfection

You have to begin with the knowledge that there is nothing perfect in this world.

Our job is not to hunt down perfection and live within it.
It is to take whatever broken pieces we have found and sew them together as best we can.

-the Rebbe's response to a girl who wanted to leave her school for what she thought to be a better one.

The Parshah In A Nutshell
Parshat Mishpatim
Following the revelation at Sinai, G‑d legislates a series of laws for the people of Israel. These include the laws of the indentured servant; the penalties for murder, kidnapping, assault and theft; civil laws pertaining to redress of damages, the granting of loans and the responsibilities of the "Four Guardians"; and the rules governing the conduct of justice by courts of law.

Also included are laws warning against mistreatment of foreigners; the observance of the seasonal festivals, and the agricultural gifts that are to be brought to the Holy Temple in Jerusalem; the prohibition against cooking meat with milk; and the mitzvah of prayer. Altogether, the Parshah of Mishpatim contains 53 mitzvot-23 imperative commandments and 30 prohibitions.

G‑d promises to bring the people of Israel to the Holy Land, and warns them against assuming the pagan ways of its current inhabitants.

The people of Israel proclaim, "We will do and we will hear all that G‑d commands us." Leaving Aaron and Hur in charge in the Israelite camp, Moses ascends Mount Sinai and remains there for forty days and forty nights to receive the Torah from G‑d.
