A word from the Rabbi

Faith is a lot about gratitude.

Gratitude is a sign of faith, that we acknowledge the involvement of G‑d in our lives.

But is faith really required in order to be a grateful person? Don't all decent people say 'please' and 'thank you'?

There's a subtle, yet profound difference between basic gratitude that any decent human being offers, and the inspired gratitude which the person of faith offers. The difference is in the order, which comes first - the 'please' or the 'thank you'.

Every decent person will say 'please' when they want something, and 'thank you' when their request is granted. That's not a sign of great virtue, just simple decency. Faith and spirituality challenge us to say 'thank you' and then say 'please'.

All people begin their day with 'prayers' and hopes for a successful day. The person of faith begins the day with loads of thanks, expressing gratitude for all the wonderful blessings they already have. Only afterwards they might also make a request for more blessings. (In fact, the Jewish prayer-book opens many pages filled with gratitude before we begin asking for anything).

Perhaps this is because strong faith will keep us reminded about the Source of our blessings; it won't allow us to take for granted that which we already have.

Now, that's a virtue.

Shabbat Shalom,

Rabbi Shalom M. Paltiel

P.S. We welcome the Hebrew School students and their families who will be joining us at shul this Shabbat for the first monthly Hebrew School Shabbat. Parents, please join us in the main shul while your children enjoy the special services being planned for them.

Help Chabad- It Will Cost You Nothing!

American Express has a program right now that will enable people to charge $25 to a vendor (including Chabad of Port Washington which is a registered vendor) on their AMEX card, which will then be refunded to the cardholder on their credit card statement. THIS IS REAL and a there is a very small window of opportunity, because there is a maximum number of refunds (300,000) they will approve, and the program is progressing very fast.

There is no catch. Simply click here to go to the AMEX web site link and register your card. It will allow you to do such as long as there are slots remaining. (Feel free to call AMEX customer service and ask about the Small Business Saturday program if you need to verify).

Then click here to make your $25 donation (which will be refunded to you). The actual donation will be processed on the night of November 26.

The card registration should be done immediately in order to reserve one of the slots allotted of this special refund program. Please don't put it off, or we will lose out on this golden opportunity.

If we get 1000 donors, that will get $25,000 to Chabad at no cost to the donors. Please act fast and help spread the word.

The Eggs Hatched!

Florence Brownstein Preschool News

The children at the Florence Brownstein Preschool, Chabad of Port Washington, had an incredible learning opportunity. We had the Quiver Farm from Pennsylvania come to do an educational presentation for the children using a French rooster and hen. They then left us with an incubator filled with a dozen eggs. We watched in amazement as the eggs hatched and the cutest, fluffiest little chicks were born. We fed and took care of the chicks for a week. After a farewell party and good-bye cards, we sent the chicks back to their family at the farm. We all agreed that this world is a truly miraculous, amazing place!

Parenting Class

NEW: Parenting Class
| At Chabad
Wednesday, Nov. 16 | 11 AM

We are pleased to announce a monthly parenting class lead by Sara Paltiel of Chabad Port Washington.

How can we raise our child to be a good person and not just raise our child to feel good?

Come listen, share and learn with us. In today's world with so much distraction, we find ourselves caught up in a whirlwind of technology, over scheduling and a sense of entitlement. This may lead to less communication and harmony in the home. Sara will share, and discuss practical parenting techniques based on her experience, and the Torah to help us make our home a sanctuary- a loving, calm and spiritual environment.

Please RSVP by calling the office 516 767 8672.

Question of the Week

Can a Viking be Jewish?
By: Rabbi Aron Moss
Sydney, Australia

Question:
I feel like I am a Jewish soul born in a non-Jewish body. I have always been surrounded by Jewish friends, loved the religion, and after years of study I just fulfilled my dream and converted to Judaism. My family has no Jewish roots whatsoever, I descend from Vikings on both sides, so it is all a bit of a mystery. Any explanation?

Answer: Many people from all different walks of life have reported feeling an affinity to Jews and Judaism. Some leave it at that. Others take it further. For them, it is more than just a curiosity with Jewish things or a taste for Jewish cooking. It is in their soul.

The Parshah In A Nutshell
Parshat Vayeira
G‑d reveals Himself to Abraham three days after the first Jew's circumcision at age ninety-nine; but Abraham rushes off to prepare a meal for three guests who appear in the desert heat. One of the three-who are angels disguised as men-announces that, in exactly one year, the barren Sarah will give birth to a son. Sarah laughs.

Abraham pleads with G‑d to spare the wicked city of Sodom. Two of the three disguised angels arrive in the doomed city, where Abraham's nephew, Lot, extends his hospitality to them and protects them from the evil intentions of a Sodomite mob. The two guests reveal that they have come to overturn the place, and to save Lot and his family. Lot's wife turns into a pillar of salt when she disobeys the command not to look back at the burning city as they flee.

While taking shelter in a cave, Lot's two daughters (believing that they and their father are the only ones left alive in the world) get their father drunk, lie with him, and become pregnant. The two sons born from this incident father the nations of Moab and Ammon.
