In the Face of Tragedy...

A word from the Rabbi

Next week we observe Tisha B'Av, the saddest day on the Jewish calendar, when we commemorate the destruction of the first and second Holy Temples which were destroyed on this day (in 423 BCE and 69 CE respectively).

The Holy Temple was not merely an impressive building that served as HQ for everything Jewish. The Temple was very much G‑d's home here on earth, a home He shared with His people. Kings and nations from far and wide acknowledged the special bond between the two inseperables - G‑d and His people - and brought regular offerings to the Temple, so that they too can feel and be blessed by the Divine Presence - the Shechina - which was so palpable in the Temple. (Is it any wonder that some people developed a dislike towards us? Think - teacher's pet, dad's favorite...)

So the loss is great. But it's been a long time. Why observe a communal day of fasting and mourning each year for a loss sufferred close to 2000 years ago?

Like I said recently at the tragic, untimely funeral of Karen Kobin, undoubetly an unusual woman, suddenly snatched from her loving family: "There's a price to pay for having an extraordinary mom. When she's gone - the hurt is extraordinary."

Is the gift of an extraordinary relationship worth the price? I say yes.

You're a Jew. You have a very special relationship with SomeOne extraordinary. Pay the price. Fast this Tisha B'Av (from 8:03pm on Monday to 8:32pm Tuesday). You might even shed a tear and feel some pain. It's a sign the relationship is alive and well... all these years later.

Shabbat Shalom,

Rabbi Shalom M Paltiel

PS I strongly encourage you to fast this Tisha B'Av. Coming to services is less important; just by abstaining from food and drink these 25 hours while you go about your business is VERY important and valuable. (Besides, most of us could afford losing a few pounds anyway... so why not get a mitzvah at the same time).

Featured Film: The Rebbe & The Holy Land

People often inquire about the Rebbe and his views on Israel.

Our custom has been to show a film on Tisha B'Av late afternoon related to the theme of the day - Jewish survival. The land of Israel is certainly central to that idea.

I have therefore chosen to show a film entitled: The Rebbe and the Holy Land, which highlights the Rebbe's relationship with modern day Israel, its people and its leaders.

Please mark your calendar to join us for this film on Tisha B'Av, Tuesday, August 9, at 6:30 pm. The film is 30 minutes. (Mincha services will follow the film).

May Hashem bring peace to Israel and blessings and good tidings to the entire world.

Chabad Sports League to begin in September

Chabad Sports League to begin in September in conjunction with Island Garden Sports Complex

As you may know, Chabad has built a beautiful state of the art air conditioned gym, the Adam Katz Athletic Center. Brad & Mira Bernstein have volunteered to be Chabad's Sports Leagues Commissioners, in charge of Chabad's youth basketball program. They have secured an agreement with Island Garden/Super League to work together with us for this coming season and season's thereafter to develop a skills training program and to put together local teams (3rd thru 8th grade boys) to be coached by independent and experienced professionals.

At least half of the games will be held at Chabad in the Katz Athletic Center gymnasium as our home court. The remaining games will be played at the Island Garden or affiliated facilities. Significantly less driving to Garden City, skills and teams to be coached by professionals, rather than the dads, along with convenient practice and games scheduled in Port should be beneficial to the community. Teams are open to all races and religions (with discounts for Chabad members). The program is starting in September (skills building) and super league games will begin by November.

SAVE THE DATE: September 8 and 9

For My Children? Only the Best!

Parents are never satisfied to provide their children with the minimum, or even the average. For their own needs a father or mother might settle for less, but for their children they want only the greatest and the best they can provide. If this is so with food and clothing, which are quite temporary, how much more so when it comes to a child's spiritual education, which impacts the rest of his or her entire life.

Question of the Week

You're No Angel
By: Rabbi Aron Moss | Sydney, AU

Question:
My religious observance has started to become neurotic. I am forever worried if I am doing things 100% right. Did I say the correct blessing? Did I wash my hands correctly before the meal? Did I accidently break Shabbos? I am scared I am becoming compulsive. On the other hand, I do want to take Jewish law seriously. Can I be fully observant and not go mad?

Answer:
Being careful about mitzvos is a very good thing. When it comes to fulfilling the divine will, every detail matters. But there is a limit. CONTINUE >>

The Parshah In A Nutshell

Parshat Devarim

On the 1st of Shevat (37 days before his passing), Moses begins his repetition of the Torah to the assembled Children of Israel, reviewing the events that occurred and the laws that were given in the course of their 40-year journey from Egypt to Sinai to the Promised Land, rebuking the people for their failings and iniquities, and enjoining them to keep the Torah and observe its commandments in the land that G‑d is giving them as an eternal heritage, into which they shall cross after his death.

Moses recalls his appointment of judges and magistrates to ease his burden of meting out justice to the people and teaching them the word of G‑d; the journey from Sinai through the great and fearsome desert; the sending of the Spies and the people's subsequent spurning of the Promised Land, so that G‑d decreed that the entire generation of the Exodus shall die out in the desert. "Also against me," says Moses, "was G‑d angry for your sakes, saying: You, too, shall not go in there."

Moses also recounts some more recent events: the refusal of the nations of Moab and Ammon to allow the Israelites to pass through their countries; the wars against the Emorite kings Sichon and Og, and the settlement of their lands by the tribes of Reuben and Gad and part of the tribe of Menasseh; and Moses' message to his successor, Joshua, who will take the people into the Land and lead them in the battles for its conquest: " Fear them not, for the L-rd your G‑d, He shall fight for you."
