A word from the Rabbi

A serious sports fan will be there Opening Day. Come what may.

A season's ticket holder won't miss the World Series.

A passionate football fan will make it his business to be at the Super Bowl. Everything else gets scheduled around it.

True, they can be seen on Cable or taped for viewing later. But to the 'die hard' that's not an option. You've got to be there when it happens. Period.

This Wednesday, June 8, we re-enact the Ten Commandments (not the movie... the real thing) by reading them publicly "at a shul near you" on the very anniversary they were read the first time.

Don't miss it!

Shavuot, as the holiday is called, is arguably the most important day on the Jewish calendar because that's when it all began. So be there! You're a "season ticket holder" by virtue of your birthright. Allow yourself to be the PASSIONATE Jew that you know you really are.

Don't be represented by the hubbie, the wife or the kids. (But don't let the kids miss this either...) Don't read about it later... Whatever it takes, move things around if you have to. I promise, you won't regret it. This is YOUR Torah, YOUR people, YOUR winning team (World Champions since 1312 BCE).

Shavuot. The best kept secret in Judaism. Be there!

Shabbat Shalom,

Rabbi Shalom M. Paltiel

P.S. Our Chabad is offering two readings of the Ten Commandments on Wednesday, June 8th, First at 10:30 am, and another at 6 pm. Each has a special program for kids. Also, like any major league event, there'll be lots of delicious food plus ice cream at both events. (If you don't live in town, tune in at your local Chabad or Shul).

Alex Schwartz's Bar Mitzvah

This week, Simone & Michael Schwartz will celebrate the Bar Mitzvah of their son, Alexander. Both Alex and his younger sister, Lauren, attend the Chabad Hebrew School.

Alex believes that, through the Bar Mitzvah process at Chabad, he has been able to make many positive resolutions for himself. One such resolution is the mitzvah of Tefilin. This is one of the most important Mitzvot that a Jewish male can do. Alex understands that by putting on Tefilin more often, he can strengthen his relationship with Hashem. Another positive resolution that has come about because of the Bar Mitzvah process has been the celebration of Shabbat. Friday night dinners have taken on a new meaning in the Schwartz home. The family now celebrates Shabbat with the lighting of the candles, challah, Kiddush and a delicious meal.

When Alex is not studying for his Bar Mitzvah, he enjoys spending time with his family and friends. His other interests include singing and acting, and various community service activities.

Chabad is proud of Alex and the entire Schwartz family for their continued growth in Judaism and involvement in our community. Mazal Tov!

Question of the Week
Quickie Conversions?

By: Rabbi Aron Moss
Sydney, Australia

I often hear rabbis complain that the Jewish people is shrinking due to intermarriage and assimilation. But it is you rabbis who are the major obstacle to Judaism growing! If you would make conversion a bit easier, many more non-Jews would join us. Why do you stubbornly insist on a long and difficult conversion process, when you are closing the door to many potential converts?

Answer:

I would like to nominate you to be the next Secretary General of the UN. You have come up with a brilliant formula that could greatly benefit the world.

You argue that the Jewish people would grow if only it were easier to become Jewish. Let's apply that logic to some other world issues, and most of our problems could easily be solved.

- Poverty could be reduced immediately. Simply lower the poverty line.

- There would be many more millionaires around if you didn't need so much money to be one.

- The crime rates would drop dramatically if we just legalise criminal activity

- If we dropped the life-expectancy age from 70 down to 50, people would on average live much longer...

Daily Thought

A Different Peace

True peace is not a forced truce, not a homogenization of differences, not a common ground that abandons our home territories.

True peace is the oneness that sprouts from diversity, from a panorama of colors, strokes and textures. From the harmony of many instruments each playing a unique part, not one overlapping the other's kingdom by even the breadth of a hair. There, in the most delightful beauty of this world, there shines G‑d's most profound oneness.

Those who attempt to blur those borders, they are unwittingly destroying the world. Beginning with the crucial border between man and woman-for this is the beginning of all diversity, the sharpest focus of G‑d's oneness, shining intensely upon His precious world.

Parshat Naso
Completing the head-count of the Children of Israel taken in the Sinai Desert, a total of 8,580 Levite men between the ages of 30 and 50 are counted in a tally of those who will be doing the actual work of transporting the Tabernacle.

G‑d communicates to Moses the law of the Sotah, the wayward wife suspected of unfaithfulness to her husband. Also given is the law of the Nazir who forswears wine, lets his or her hair grow long, and is forbidden to become contaminated through contact with a dead body. Aaron and his descendents the kohanim are instructed on how to bless the people of Israel.

The leaders of the twelve tribes of Israel each bring their offerings for the inauguration of the altar. Although their gifts are identical, each is brought on a different day and is individually described by the Torah.
