A word from the Rabbi

Today is the Rebbe's 109th birthday. In Judaism we don't stop counting after a person's passing, because the soul lives on. Today is a very special day, the day Al-Mighty G‑d gifted the world with the luminous soul of this gigantic human being, back in 1902.

What is a Rebbe?

There are many answers to that question. Here's one, given by the Rebbe himself. A man once asked this question to the Rebbe himself: "So, what exactly are you? It can't be just another rabbi. After all, why would this one individual generate so much love, admiration and commitment from so many thousands. So what is a Rebbe?"

The Rebbe smiled and said: A Rebbe is a friend.

The man: Is that it? A friend? Is that the whole big deal? Why, I've got many friends...

The Rebbe continues: Let me explain what kind of friend we're talking about. Not just any friend. It's the kind of friend who you trust completely. A friend with whom you are comfortable sharing anything about yourself including your weaknesses and vulnerabilities without fear of being judged in any fashion.

Oh - says the man. Such a friend... why I don't have even one such friend...

----------

This blessed day is filled in abundance with Hashem's blessings in the merit of all of the staggering accomplishments of this radiant soul during its lifetime here on earth. You and I can tap in to those potent blessings. Here are some ways:

- Recite Chapter 110 of Psalms, which is "the Rebbe's Psalm" for this coming year. Click here for a link to the chapter in Hebrew and English.

- Men, put on your tefillin if you haven't already done so.

- Women, light the Shabbat candles at 7:16 pm.

- Visit www.TheRebbe.org and study a portion of his teachings.

Or do any mitzvah. Do it in honor of the Rebbe. It's the best birthday present you can give to him. You'll feel good about it, plus it'll make the Rebbe proud, even as he beseeches on High for all of Hashem's blessings for you and your family, for a healthy, happy and meaningful Passover, and good things in your life all year round.

After all, that's what friends are for.

Shabbat Shalom and Happy Pesach!

Rabbi Shalom M. Paltiel

Sell Your Chametz

Since it is prohibited to possess chametz on Pesach, any chametz left undisposed must be sold to a non-Jew. [Any chametz remaining in the possession of a Jew during Pesach may not be used, eaten, bought or sold even after Pesach.] Therefore, all chametz that will not be eaten or burned before Pesach and all chametz utensils that will not be thoroughly cleaned by then should be stored away.

Be part of supporting Israel. See also the hateful messages being left if you need motivation to become involved.

Question of the Week
Wicked Children and Post-Modern Parents

By: Rabbi Aron Moss
Sydney, Australia

One thing I never understood in the Haggadah of Pesach. What's so wise about the Wise Son? He asks his parents, "What are all the laws that our G‑d has commanded you?" He seems no better than the Wicked Son, who is criticized for excluding himself and asking "What is this Pesach service to you?" - to you and not to him. Does the Wise Son not also say "commanded you" and not him, thus excluding himself?

The Parshah In A Nutshell
Parshat Acharei
Following the deaths of Nadav and Avihu, G‑d warns against unauthorized entry "into the holy." Only one person, the Kohen Gadol ("high priest"), may, but once a year, on Yom Kippur, enter the innermost chamber in the Sanctuary to offer the sacred ketoret to G‑d.

Another feature of the Day of Atonement service is the casting of lots over two goats to determine which should be offered to G‑d and which should be dispatched to carry off the sins of Israel to the wilderness.

The Parshah of Acharei also warns against bringing korbanot (animal or meal offerings) anywhere but in the Holy Temple, forbids the consumption of blood, and details the laws prohibiting incest and other deviant sexual relations.
