The pilot got on the loudspeaker: "Are there any clergy on board?" A rabbi identified himself. "Rabbi, we're experiencing engine trouble. Please... do something religious." The rabbi stood up and took up a collection.
Throughout our people's long illustrious history, rabbis were often called upon to take responsibility for the financial wellbeing of Torah institutions and charitable causes. It's become almost as common to see a rabbi 'taking up a collection' as teaching a Torah class.
A congregant once complained to his rabbi: "You always seem to be talking money. Other rabbis talk Torah!" To which the rabbi replied: "Others talk Torah and think money; I talk money and think Torah..."
Jacob's ladder is the symbol of Judaism and our relationship to Hashem. The Hebrew word for ladder, sulam, has the same numerical value (gematriah) as the Hebrew word for money - mammon - both equal 136. (In Yiddish it's gelt, in case you wanted to now...) Meaning to say: Money is like a ladder; it can take us down to the lowest levels of greed and materialism. It can also raise us up to the highest spiritual heights, when we give our hard earned funds to tzedaka (charity).
If the value of a mitzvah is to be judged on how difficult it is and how much sacrifice it requires, writing a check to charity would easily weigh over even sincere prayer or intense Torah study. The book of Zohar refers to charity as the primary mitzvah of all. It's difficult. It's a sacrifice. And it infuses holiness and purpose into the potentially lowest place of all, the place of greed and selfishness.
To keep a Chabad House going requires gelt.
If you have already supported our dinner effort, I thank you, on behalf of the thousands who benefit from the warmth, light and wisdom of Chabad House. If you have not yet given us your support, if you are in the position to help, I ask for your generous support. Help Chabad spread "Judaism with a Smile".
Think Torah. Write a check.
Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Shalom M. Paltiel
P. S. Don't miss Sara's lecture on the queston: ARE WOMEN EQUAL IN JUDAISM? Do you ever wonder how to reconcile Judasim's respect for life, liberty and human rights, with the seeming inequality it affords women? Is it fair that I am not counted in the minyan just because I'm female? Why cant I get an Aliya? It doesn't seem fair. Isnt it high time we brought some fairness into traditional Judaism?
These are questions I hear from people all the time. Here's the chance to learn about these issues. Don't miss this riveting, eye opening discussion by our own dear Sara Paltiel, taking place this Sunday morning at Chabad at 10 AM. Click here for more information and to RSVP.

Talmud Study now Mandatory in South Korea
The following fascinating article was translated by The Muqata from YNET.
- Thank you Tami Ruben for bringing this article to my attention.
Close to 50 million people live in South Korea, and everyone learns Gemara (Talmud) in school. "We tried to understand why the Jews are geniuses, and we came to the conclusion that it is because they study Talmud," said the Korean ambassador to Israel. And this is how "Rav Papa" became a more well known scholar in Korea than in Israel...

Save the Hairy-Nosed Wombat
By: Rabbi Aron Moss
Sydney, Australia
Dave Asks:
The problem with rabbis like you is your narrow view of the world. You always talk about the Jewish future, Jewish continuity, Jews marrying Jews, having Jewish children. What about the rest of humanity? Why do we have to always divide between people? Can't we speak of humans rather than Jews?
Rabbi Moss answers:
You have a good point. Maybe I should broaden my perspective and be concerned about more global issues and not so pre-occupied with Jewish particularism. So if you don't mind, I would like to hear your point of view on one such issue: The hairy-nosed wombat...

Beyond Humanism
People call me "old-fashioned" for my belief in an ancient and timeless teaching and for my faith in G‑d.
In truth, it is they who are old-fashioned;
for they cling to an idea that failed decades ago.
The Age of Reason, of Enlightenment, of Humanism-when Knowledge and Intellect were worshipped as the Redeemers of Mankind-all this died and was buried when the most civilized and intellectual nation on earth committed the most unthinkable atrocities.
Humanity, to survive, must accept, feel, stand in awe and connect to That Which Is Above us.

Parshat Tazria
The Parshah of Tazria continues the discussion of the laws of Tumah v'Taharah, ritual impurity and purity.
A woman giving birth should undergo a process of purification, which includes immersing in a mikvah (a naturally gathered pool of water) and bringing offerings to the Holy Temple. All male infants are to be circumcised on the eighth day of life.
Tzaraat ("leprosy") is a supra-natural plague, which also can afflict garments. If white or pink patches appear on a person's skin (dark red or green in garments), a Kohen is summoned. Judging by various signs, such as an increase in size of the afflicted area after a seven-day quarantine, the Kohen pronounces it tameh (impure) or tahor (pure).
A person afflicted with tzaraat must dwell alone outside of the camp (or city) until he is healed. The afflicted area in a garment is removed; if the tzaraat spreads or recurs, the entire garment must be burned. |
