A word from the Rabbi

What a Purim!  Many have said the party featuring the "Twins from France" and the dancing that followed was our greatest Purim ever.  Plus the Hebrew School had an amazing talent show the next morning I'm told, with students and parents participating. Thanks to all who made it all happen! Click here for amazing photos from the Saturday night celebration. Thank you Rob Salzbank (rampagestudios.com) for these fantastic pictures, as always.

I also want to thank my dedicated wife Sara for putting together the beautiful Purim gift baskets for our community and friends. Thank you to Marina Shapiro for graciously delivering the majority of the 230 Purim gift baskets that were sent out to families in the area.

Now onto the next event: Our 20th Anniversary Dinner is taking place in two weeks, on April 7th.  Please don't sit this one out... The annual dinner is an important event for us because it raises funds that are essential to keeping our vibrant center and its activities going year round. The dinner is also an important event for our community to get together and celebrate. This year, we celebrate 20 years (!) since our arrival to this town and the establishment of the original Chabad House (in a tiny apartment at 92 Shore Road). Just 20 short years later (where has the time gone...) we will mark this milestone in the brand new Adam Katz Athletic Center gymnasium which was built through the amazing generosity of our incredible and dedicated president, Mr Adam Katz.

I ask you for your support and I ask for your friendship. Support our work of "Judaism with a Smile" by giving generously to the dinner effort. Show your friendship by making it a point of attending personally. It will mean the world to us if you can join us!

Shabbat Shalom,

Rabbi Shalom M. Paltiel

P.S. The IDF (Israeli Defense Force or Israeli Army) has produced a video on you-tube explaining what's going on, but you-tube wants to remove it by using the excuse, not enough people are logging in. Please forward this link so many people will log in and the IDF will be able to have its voice heard.
(Thank you Ellen Savran and Samuel Glasser for bringing this to my attention).
Let us hope and pray for the day when the world sees the truth about Israel and the Middle East. Each of us should do our part in disseminating the information. One very infamous individual famously said: Tell a lie enough times and people begin to believe it. That's clearly what has happened to Israel. We must be vigilant, not to believe - and do whatever is in our power to influence others not to believe - the barrage of lies spread about our homeland, the singular beacon of freedom and human rights in that entire region.

Question of the Week
You Must Be Joking!

By: Rabbi Aron Moss
Sydney, Australia

I saw you put on a comedy night for Purim. I have never understood the connection between the two. I know it is a festival of miracles, but then again, so is Pesach, and we don't do comedy acts on Pesach. So why jokes on Purim?

Daily Thought

Without Measure

As soon as you start measuring good deeds, to determine which is greater, which takes priority over the other-you have already entered precarious ground.

Your job is to do whatever is sent your way.

The Parshah In A Nutshell
Parshat Shemini
On the eighth day following "seven days of inauguration," Aaron and his sons begin to officiate as Kohanim (priests); a fire issues forth from G‑d to consume the offerings on the Altar and the Divine Presence comes to dwell in the Sanctuary.

Aaron's two elder sons, Nadav and Avihu, offer a "strange fire before G‑d, which He commanded them not" and die before G‑d. Aaron is silent in face of his tragedy. Moses and Aaron subsequently disagree as to a point of law regarding the offerings, but Moses concedes to Aaron that Aaron is in the right.

G‑d commands the kosher laws, identifying the animal species permissible and forbidden for consumption. Land animals may be eaten only if they have split hooves and also chew their cud; fish must have fins and scales; a list of non-kosher birds is given, and a list of kosher insects (four types of locusts).

Also in Shemini are some of the laws of ritual purity, including the purifying power of the mikvah (a pool of water meeting specified qualifications) and the wellspring. Thus the people of Israel are enjoined to " differentiate between the impure and the pure."
