"One Mitzvah brings to another" say the Sages. Goodness is addictive and contagious. Like the ripples that are created when a pebble is tossed into a pond, every good thought, word, or deed leaves in its wake a consequence of blessing, goodness, health and peace of mind. (Ah... at times it seems no good deed goes unpunished? That's for another discussion)...
In the past, this was a spiritual concept that was difficult to comprehend and had to be taken on faith. G‑d's gift of modern technology which is turning the world into a global village makes it easier to appreciate this truism. Today, the consequences of our actions are immediate via the internet, Facebook, twitter, texting, email, etc. When a devastating earthquake strikes in one corner of the globe, almost immediately images, videos, and the personal tragedy of millions is experienced by the entire global community. Within 24 hours millions of dollars in relief come pouring in from around the world.
Enter Eden Harrari, a graduate of the Chabad Hebrew School who recently celebrated her Bat Mitzvah at Chabad. Her Bat Mitzvah project (www.EdensMitzvahs.com) was to post a mitzvah she does each day, while encouraging friends and family to do the same. A modern day, living example of the positive ripple effect of a Mitzvah. (Eden is now part of an international contest of Jewish children doing goodness. Vote for Eden here: www.PowerofJewishChildren.com. It'll make us proud and also help our Chabad).
A congregant who recently began putting on Tefillin each day told me that he makes a point to keep his study door open while he does the mitzvah to inspire his children to follow his example and be more active Jewishly. I said to the fellow: "Nice idea, but not necessary. You can close the door. They'll know... "So the next time you're faced with a decision whether or not to do a mitzvah (e.g. you wake up on Shabbat morning and you can't decide where to go - Shul... or back to bed), remember the power of your actions; they're contagious, they don't end with you alone (e.g. your adult children will eventually find out you've been showing up at Shul on Shabbat mornings... Before long (after they recover from the shock) they'll be attending their own Shul - without telling you of course - or doing some other mitzvah to bring more meaning to their lives). Let's keep doing mitzvahs, acts of goodness, kindness and yiddishkeit. It's all over the place; it's spreading like... Facebook!
Shabbat Shalom!
Rabbi Shalom M Paltiel
P.S. VOTE FOR EDEN:
Please take a moment to vote for Chabad's very own Eden Harari, whose Bat Mitzvah project website has made her a candidate to win grand prize in the Power of Jewish Children Competition. Eden's website charts her doing of a Mitzvah a day and encourages others to log their Mitzvahs as well. Please take one minute to vote in the blue Chessed Award column at www.PowerofJewishChildren.com. Your vote will help Eden as well as Chabad of Port Washington. Forward this email to your friends so they can vote too.

Where are all the Pretty Girls?
By: Rabbi Aron Moss
Sydney, Australia
I am open to being set up with girls and have been on a few blind dates. But it's going nowhere. I'm just not attracted to the girls I'm set up with. Are there no good-looking girls around?

Not Doing
There are times when love can kill. There are times when you love someone so much, you cannot allow him to breathe.
He must do things the way you understand is best for him- because you cannot bear that one you love so much should be in any way distant from the truth as you know it.
"After all," you imagine, "I must do for him what I would have done for myself!"
But true love makes room for the one you love.
True love is best expressed not in what you do and what you say, but in what you do not do, and what you do not say.

Parshat Pekudei
Moses makes an accounting of the gold, silver and copper donated by the people for the making of the Mishkan. Betzalel, Ahaliav and their assistants make the Eight Priestly Garments — the Apron, Breastplate, Cloak, Crown, Hat, Tunic, Sash and Breeches — according to the specifications communicated to Moses in the Parshah of Tetzaveh.
The Mishkan is completed and all its components are brought to Moses, who erects it and anoints it with the holy Anointing Oil, and initiates Aaron and his four sons into the priesthood. A cloud appears over the Mishkan, signifying the Divine Presence that has come to dwell within it. |
