A word from the Rabbi

Even if you're not a regular "Shul-goer", its nice to attend once in a while to stay connected, agreed?  The problem becomes when to make that "once in a while."  Here's a good reason to make this Shabbat such a time:

We've got a fascinating guest speaker who will deliver the sermon (approx 11AM). His name is attorney Howard Birnbach, who illustrates how much of the American legal system has its origin in Torah law.  Birnbach cites numerous striking examples from this week's Torah portion, Mishpatim (lit. Laws) to make the point.  Come join us.  You'll learn some interesting things, while gaining a new perspective on Torah's timeless wisdom.

When I heard Birnbach's talk some years back, everyone in the room kept shaking their heads, asking the question: Who could have thought of all of this sophisticated stuff so many years ago?  Well, you know Who...

So what do you say?  Comin'?  I'm sure come Shabbat you'll be ready to get out of the house, especially if you hunkered down for the storm... Come on down!

Stay safe.

Shabbat Shalom,

Rabbi Shalom M. Paltiel

Heartwarming Lesson from a Snow Storm

First Snow
By Chana Weisberg

In the Canadian winter, it snows. And snows. And snows.

Yet, no matter how much snow we get, for my children, the initial snowfall is always the most enthralling. Almost magical.

This morning was our first snow storm of the season. We woke up engulfed in layers upon layers of white stuff. Snow covered the roads; it coated our porch; and it blanketed our front steps...

The Parshah In A Nutshell
Parshat Mishpatim
Following the revelation at Sinai, G‑d legislates a series of laws for the people of Israel. These include the laws of the indentured servant; the penalties for murder, kidnapping, assault, and theft; civil laws pertaining to redress of damages, the granting of loans, and the responsibilities of the "Four Guardians"; and the rules governing the conduct of justice by courts of law.

Also included are laws warning against mistreatment of foreigners; the observance of the seasonal festivals, and the agricultural gifts that are to be brought to the Holy Temple in Jerusalem; the prohibition against cooking meat with milk; and the mitzvah of prayer. Altogether, the Parshah of Mishpatim contains fifty-three mitzvot — 23 imperative commandments and 30 prohibitions.

G‑d promises to bring the people of Israel to the Holy Land, and warns them against assuming the pagan ways of its current inhabitants.

The people of Israel proclaim, "We will do and we will hear all that G‑d commands us." Leaving Aaron and Hur in charge in the Israelite camp, Moses ascends Mount Sinai and remains there for forty days and forty nights to receive the Torah from G‑d.
