A word from the Rabbi

Whenever we pick up a newspaper, and we see the word, "Israel" on a headline, we are immediately drawn to the article. When we listen to the news and Israel is mentioned, instinctively, our ears perk up.

This is not just Israelis, or Jews that travel often to Israel; what's remarkable is that even Jews who have never stepped foot in the Holy Land, feel this personal connection.

This sense of ownership was granted to us by G‑d. In this week's Torah portion the Torah tells us that the Land of Israel was given to each and every one of us as an inheritance. Every Jew has equal ownership over the land of Israel.

This land is our land!

See you at shul on Shabbos.

Shabbat Shalom!

Can G‑d and Facebook be friends?
Here's something to think about: Has technology helped or harmed religious commitment?

Science and religion have long had a tumultuous relationship. In the 16th century the findings of Copernicus and Galileo sent a cold shiver down the clergy's spine, and science threatened to replace G‑d with reason.

But religion was not displaced. In fact, scientific findings often point to the brilliant design of G‑d's universe.

Question of the Week

Soul Explosions

By: Rabbi Aron Moss
Sydney, Australia

Why doesn't G‑d make a flood to take away all the yucky people like He did for Noah?

(from Zac, aged 4)

Answer:

Zac, I know you are a very good boy. But have you ever been naughty? Did you ever hurt your little brother, or say something rude to your mummy?

G‑d wants us to be good all the time. But we don't always get it right. Even good boys like you can sometimes do the wrong thing.

It is a pity that we are naughty sometimes, but the most important thing is that we stop being naughty and say sorry. Then it's ok again, and we can start being good and doing what's right.

If a flood would come every time someone did something bad, then no one would get the chance to say sorry and change. So G‑d has patience. He is waiting for the yucky people to realise that they are wrong and to start behaving.

In the times of Noah, G‑d waited 120 years before He brought the flood. Only because no one changed their naughty ways in all that time did the flood happen. They even watched Noah building the ark, so they knew the flood was coming, but they still didn't start behaving themselves. From that story we learn how silly it is to keep on being yucky.

Even if you have been naughty, you can change and say sorry and be good from now on. G‑d is waiting for you, because even when you do something bad, He knows how good you can be.

Daily Thought

Not By Choice

We are not Jews by choice. We are not circumcised by choice; they do it to us before we can be asked. Neither did anyone ask us if we would like to be obligated in all these mitzvahs; not since Mount Sinai. Even the one who joins us does so because something propels him from inside.

If we were Jews because our minds and hearts told us so, then our Judaism would take us only as far as our minds and hearts can know. But we are not. And so, our journey is on eagle's wings and our destiny beyond the stars.

the parshah in a nutshell
Parshat Lech-Lecha

G‑d speaks to Abram, commanding him to "Go from your land, from your birthplace and from your father's house, to the land which I will show you." There, G‑d says, he will be made into a great nation. Abram and his wife Sarai, accompanied by his nephew Lot, journey to the Land of Canaan, where Abram builds an altar and continues to spread the message of a One G‑d.

A famine forces the first Jew to depart for Egypt, where beautiful Sarai is taken to Pharaoh's palace; Abram escapes death because they present themselves as brother and sister. A plague prevents the Egyptian king from touching her and convinces him to return her to Abram and compensate the brother-revealed-as-husband with gold, silver and cattle.

Back in the Land of Canaan, Lot separates from Abram and settles in the evil city of Sodom, where he falls captive when the mighty armies of Chedorlaomer and his three allies conquer the five cities of the Sodom Valley. Abram sets out with a small band to rescue his nephew, defeats the four kings, and is blessed by Malki-Zedek the king of Salem (Jerusalem).

G‑d seals the Covenant Between the Parts with Abram, in which the exile and persecution (Galut) of the people of Israel is foretold and the Holy Land is bequeathed to them as their eternal heritage

Still childless ten years after their arrival in the Land, Sarai tells Abram to marry her maidservant Hagar. Hagar conceives, becomes insolent toward her mistress, and then flees when Sarai treats her harshly; an angel convinces her to return and tells her that her son will father a populous nation. Ishmael is born in Abram's 86th year.

Thirteen years later, G‑d changes Abram's name to Abraham ("father of multitudes") and Sarai's to Sarah ("princess"), and promises that a son will be born to them; from this child, whom they should call Isaac ("will laugh"), will stem the great nation with which G‑d will establish His special bond. Abraham is commanded to circumcise himself and his descendents as a "sign of the covenant between Me and you."
