10/10, thank you. Would it be possible for someone to answer an important question of mine? At the time Abraham was annointed by HaShem, what was the belief of any kind of after-life for the Jews? Yom Tov to all. Reply

Very easy and fun quiz. I think this may be because while all Five Books of Moses clearly constitutes the greatest and most important books ever written, that of the those five, the first one is my personal favorite. It has the most stories, for one thing, it is primarily psychological in nature, and it involves essentially the history of one family, which is easier to focus on than the entire Jewish nation which is the focus of the remaining four books of the Torah. One of the key messages of the entire book of Genesis is that before a nation can hope to be a successful one, that first it must be built on families who have learned to get along with one another. When Joseph publicly forgives his brothers, asking if their father Jacob is still alive, it is really the culmination of the entire book of Genesis, and its single most compelling moment Reply

Jacob Thomas Australia April 13, 2025
in response to Raymond :

What a nice observation and so true in nature. However, I see it as an awe inspiring depiction of Hashems love for us all, and out fragility being only mortal. Again I agree with you about the fundamentals about the family unit to keep society in order. Hashem is our main focus. Imagine coming from a liberal family and being the only one who goes to Yeshiva then Addas. You can lose your whole family but still have Hashem as #1 in your life when all have abandoned you. Reply

Raymond West Hollywood April 15, 2025
in response to Jacob Thomas:

Well, actually, families are such an important, fundamental part of any enduringly successful society, that even in situations where not everybody in it are formally religious, everybody in the family needs to learn to get along with and even love one another. A religious person who continues to be at odds with his secular family has a long way to go before he or she can call him or herself truly religious Reply

in response to Raymond:

10/10 that unconditional family unity and love
which you are describing doesn't exist in the first book of Moses
it starts with Adam and Eve where kain kills his brother Abel
then the twin brothers Jacob and Esau where the older brother Esau
wanted to kill his younger brother Jacob
the book of bereshit teaches us reality what can happen in everyday live Reply

The age of Aaron, Miriam and Moses raises questions. If Aaron was 3 years older than Moses, that means Miriam was a year or two older than Moses. Would it be possible that she was old enough to look after Moses when he was placed in the basket Reply

Gitel N.Y. October 30, 2024
in response to Lusani Raidani:

Miriam was older than Aaron and Moses. Reply

VelVel (Beau) SPRINGFIELD October 30, 2024
in response to Lusani Raidani:

Aaron was three years older than Moses and Miriam and she was the eldest of the three. Miriam, by all means, did not know what was going to happen to Moses. She placed her Faith in G_d's hands. When we place all things in G_d's hands...look what happens...He delivers us in His own way. I also feel the Miriam was 'sorta' scared if she took Moses under her care Ramses II (the Great) would have him killed. Ramses' sister was the one led by G_d to find Moses and raised him as her son. Ramses loved his sister and accepted her adoption of Moses. Am I wrong Rabbi? Reply

Andrew Elder Ohio USA October 31, 2024
in response to VelVel (Beau):

Well said, from what I've learned and learning, you are correct.

Shalom y'all Shalom Israel Reply

Lusani Raidani Boksburg, South Africa October 31, 2024
in response to VelVel (Beau):

Thanks for the clarification. I had misunderstood and thought Aaron was the eldest of the three. Reply
